PSP Student Handbook STUDENT HANDBOOK PEDIATRIC SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY CONCENTRATION HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY DOCTORAL PROGRAM 2020-2021 Department of Psychology East Carolina University Greenville, NC 27858-4353 (252) 328-6800 This handbook is designed to provide information to guide the student toward successful completion of the doctoral program offered by the Department of Psychology. It is not intended to replace the Graduate Catalog and other official documents of East Carolina University. In the event of a conflict between statements contained in this handbook and University policies, procedures, and catalog the latter shall govern. Prepared by the School Psychology Faculty Department of Psychology East Carolina University Preface Welcome to the Pediatric School Psychology Concentration within the Health Psychology PhD program at East Carolina University. This Handbook will assist doctoral students in understanding the policies, expectations, and standards of the program. It should also prove helpful in planning the students' educational program of study. It is important to note that these policies and procedures are in addition to the general policies of the ECU Graduate School or the University. This Handbook is meant as a supplement these policies and procedures, which are found on the ECU Graduate School website for current students: https://gradschool.ecu.edu/current-students/ This manual was prepared by the faculty members of the Pediatric School Psychology Concentration in the Health Psychology PhD Program and replaces all earlier versions of the Handbook. It is our hope that it will be helpful to students. Comments and suggestions for improvement are actively solicited and should be directed to the Program Director. Powell III, Jamie Beavers, and Emmanuelle Monte Arkansas State University A rank-ordered list was constructed that reports the first 99 of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. Eminence was measured by scores on 3 quantitative variables and 3 qualitative variables. The quantitative variables were journal citation frequency, introductory psychology textbook citation frequency, and survey response frequency. The qualitative variables were National Academy of Sciences membership, election as American Psychological Association (APA) president or receipt of the APA Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, and surname used as an eponym. The qualitative variables were quantified and combined with the other 3 quantitative variables to produce a composite score that was then used to construct a rank-ordered list of the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. Abstract The European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP) was founded in 1990 on the consensus statement, the so called “Strasbourg declaration”, and has over the last two decades contributed hugely to the development of psychotherapy as an independent and autonomous profession. The European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP), which has been awarded to approximately 6,000 therapists from different European countries, defines the standards and criteria for the professional practice of psychotherapy. This article compares psychotherapy regulations in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, France, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Bulgaria, United Kingdom and Belgium and shows their benefits and weaknesses. They can be seen as a learning opportunity and used in the process of developing an effective regulation of psychotherapy in countries where there is no such regulation yet, like for example in Slovenia. In 2005 a new phase in the development of psychotherapy in Europe and worldwide began with opening of the bachelor, master and doctor faculty study of psychotherapy science at Sigmund Freud Private University (SFU) in Vienna. Bachelor level is open for those who finish secondary school and decide to study psychotherapy as a first profession.

    A Model Prescribing Act For Psychologist Seeking Prescriptive Authority The Patient Safety Evidence Based Prescribing Act. The following is a model legislation for prescriptive authority and is an evidence based model derived from the best available science related to the prescribing of psychotropic medications. Its aim is to demonstrate the differences between psychologists who utilize medications as a proficiency in providing medications related services and those prescribers in other disciplines. It is our believe that psychologists who seek prescriptive authority must demonstrate a significant difference in the ways we would provide these services because simply adding another class of prescribers to the existing list is unacceptable and not in the best interests of patients who require treatment for mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. This model is science based. The elements of the legislation are consistent with our training as psychologists and our training in the relevant medical and pharmacological issues. NIBHQ believes that patient safety is foremost and medications are not and should not be first line treatments for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. It is clear that there will always be a place for psychiatric drugs to control psychiatric disorders. However, we advocate that this intervention must only be used when other less intrusive and safe methods have been exhausted first, and only when the medications show overwhelming support to be effective for the specific patient. We look towards the research on neurogenesis and autoplasticity of the brain, learning theory and science, psychotherapy in its broad array of techniques, psychological rehabilitation, nutrition, exercise, pharmacology and psychopharmacology for the develeopment of prescribing standards.

The Handbook was conceptualized in 2005, under the Presidency of Lisa Grossman, J.D., Ph.D. Division 31 has maintained a commitment to increasing diversity within SPTAs and APA. As part of this commitment, we are providing you with this handbook. The primary goal of the Diversity Initiative of the Committee of State Leaders has been to involve more ethnic minority psychologists in membership and leadership positions in SPTAs. The Initiative has continued to grow since 2000, which was when SPTAs were invited to nominate ethnic minority psychologists for funded participation in the State Leadership Conference. Since its inception, the Diversity Initiative has grown in terms of participation of delegates and the inclusion of the initiative within psychological associations. Many of the delegates are now being funded by their own SPTA. In addition, many of the delegates have been elected to office within their SPTA. The 2003-2009 diversity delegates and the diversity subcommittee of the Committee of State Leaders provided updates of the diversity initiatives within their SPTA. Much of the information obtained in this Handbook was obtained from these reports.     Sartre and humanistic psychotherapy 1 Alfred Betschart In an interview that with Michel Rybalka, Oreste Pucciani and Susan Gruenheck in 1975, Jean-Paul Sartre said: “There is philosophy, but there is no psychology. Psychology does not exist; either it is idle talk or it is an effort to establish what man is, starting from philosophical notions. […] psychology does not exist except in the sense of empirical psychol- ogy.”2 For Sartre, psychology—at least most of it—was philosophy. In the frame of this concept, psychotherapy is to be regarded as some kind of applied philosophy. Sar- tre’s statement about psychology immediately raises the question whether philos- ophy is psychology. For Sartre, this equation seemed indeed to be true to a large extent in both directions. Sartre was of the opinion that it is the question “What is man?” that is the major focus of philosophy.3 Whereas ordinary human sciences— from medicine to experimental psychology and sociology—treat man as an object4, philosophy is the science of man as a subject. 1 This is an extended version of a presentation give at the NASS conference 2017 at the University of La Verne (Cal./USA). 2 Jean-Paul Sartre: “The Interview”.
