Mercedes-Benz GLA

The revised compact-car fleet within Mercedes-Benz has officially been completed for 2020 with the latest GLA joining the ranks of the A-Class hatchback, A-Class sedan and CLA. The entry-level model to the Mercedes-Benz SUV range has been criticised in the past for not being much of an SUV at all. This all-new GLA looks to set the record straight taking aim directly at the recently refreshed BMW X1 with a sportier character of the bigger and more practical GLB. Although dimensions are 14 mm shorter than the outgoing model, Mercedes-Benz promises a more spacious interior than before with increased luggage space and legroom thanks to a healthy 104 mm increase in height and the clever design of the MFA2 architecture shared with the A-Class. A step forward in safety technology includes a driving assistance package with autonomous emergency braking that can activate up to 60 km/h to avoid stationary vehicles and pedestrians. The GLA will receive the AMG treatment too with the GLA 35 kicking-off with a healthy 225 kW and 400 Nm sent to all four wheels via Mercedes 4Matic system.

Lamborghini Huracán EVO Rear-Wheel Drive

The latest ‘baby bull’ aims to put the driver at the centre of the experience. For many diehard driving enthusiasts rear-wheel driven sports cars are a true, pure and unadulterated means of having the ultimate experience behind the wheel. To gain favour with such enthusiasts has changed the recipe for the Huracán EVO supercar. This is certainly a car to be celebrated as it’s one of the last of a dying breed with its howling naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 that generates 449 kW at 8 000 rpm. The Huracán EVO Rear-Wheel Drive is not purely about setting blistering lap times or straining necks when setting off from standstill, although it will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and run on to a manic 325 km/h. A new performance traction control system (P-TCS) has been calibrated specifically for the Huracán EVO Rear-Wheel Drive and is capable of delivering torque even during the final phase of a drift where the car begins to straighten. We imagine that this diabolical technology is clever enough to maintain well-controlled drifts while simultaneously ensuring massive plumes of tyre smoke is released into the atmosphere. This may not be the most intelligent application of automotive technological advancements, but it’s a relief knowing that Lamborgini still has a sense of humour. Bring it on!

Newcomers.indd 9 2020/02/06 11:17 AM Jaguar F-Type

One of the best looking British sports cars has returned from some cosmetic surgery for the second time now and the results are as expected. The Jaguar F-Type has been visually tweaked but we are not completely sure that it’s been positively enhanced over the previous model – it was, admittedly, a very tough act to follow. Ultra-slim LED headlights, slender rear LED lights and a new bonnet design with fluid lines are the most notable changes. Jaguar are proud of the near perfect sports car proportions, and now it’s been made to look more aggressive and assertive than before. The two- seater cockpit receives a 12.3 inch high- definition instrument cluster and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen matched with three tactile analogue controllers providing a blend of modern and retro to the interior. Under the bonnet three engine choices remain 423 kW Supercharged V8 thunder remains as before and the convertible has been updated too.

JAC T8 R339 900 Makes it one of the most affordable new leisure bakkies on the market

Allow us to introduce Chinese brand JAC who have launched the T8 double- cab bakkie to the South African market. It will be available in two variants, 4×2 and 4×4 with a differential lock. With the choice of six colours and it is looking to take a slice of the bustling local double- cab market. Both models are powered by the same four-cylinder 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine churning out 100 kW and 320 Nm mated to a six-speed manual transmission. JAC hopes to entice new buyers to the brand by offering good value for money by adding decent standard equipment levels. Imitation leather , Bluetooth, a 7-inch touchscreen info- tainment system and a reverse camera with rear parking sensors are all part of the deal. It ships standard with a five-year/60 000 km service plan and five-year/150 000 km warranty, too.

Porsche 75 units All to be sold exclusively in Belgium 911 Belgian Legend Edition

The first special edition of the 992 generation celebrates Jacky Ickx, one of the greatest racing drivers to get behind the wheel of a car. In celebration of his 75th birthday with Porsche’s in-house customisation arm Exclusive Manufaktur, they’ve taken the 911 Carrera 4S and finished it with touches inspired by Ickx’s trademark blue and white helmet. The bespoke paintwork called ‘X-Blue’, a Belgian flag alongside Jacky Ickx’s signature on the B-pillar among other well-considered touches make it unique. The bespoke colour was also made for the Carrera Classic alloy wheels and are offset by white accents created by advanced laser engraving. The interior sees hand- stitched leather with an X pattern and this unique Legend Edition receives the 911 moniker embroidered on the 18-way adjustable sports seats. Tastefully done Porsche.

Toyota GR Yaris

Toyota seems to have turned its approach towards performance motoring around with the launch of the balanced and fun-to-drive GR Supra. Now the brand has taken to the next generation Yaris and given it the GR (Gazoo Racing) treatment. The recipe looks to be a very exciting one. Lightweight, with oodles of power, four-wheel-drive and a manual transmission there’s much to like, but first the looks. Toyota has taken inspiration from its rally programme and as a result the GR Yaris looks like a little rally car for the road. It looks the part and should be built by the same brief with WRC- engineers over at Tommi Mäkinen Racing having had a hand in developing this hot- hatch. An all-new 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine packs a hefty 195 kW and 370 Nm sent via a proper four-wheel-drive system and not one of those half-hearted on-demand systems. In Sport mode up to 70% of torque can be sent to the rear wheels for an engaging drive. With a kerb weight of only 1 280 kg the GR Yaris will rocket off the line to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and run on to a top speed of 230 km/h. We encourage Toyota South Africa to bring this hot Yaris to our shores. M

Auto Show Like all of the Volkswagen ID models the Space Vizzion is entirely electric and in this application an 82 kWh battery offers a claimed 590 km of range according to the WLTP emissions cycle. The system powers a dual-motor system – one for each axel – and offers a healthy power output of 250 kW distributed to all four wheels through 4MOTION system. The result is a brisk 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.4 seconds, not exactly slow for a family runabout. This concept is seen rolling on massive 22-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber, and to match the freakishly large alloys the interior receives a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The ID Space Vizzion is the first Volkswagen to offer all relevant driving information shown via an AR (augmented reality) head-up-display and an interactive light strip between the A-pillars too. The concept sounds awesome, but when it comes to driving keeping it real has worked so far. Official word from Volkswagen is that this concept is a concrete outlook to the production version that will be presented to the world at the end of 2021 with models sent to Europe, North America and China. We in South Africa unfortunately don’t make the cut just yet, but the fact that Volkswagen is back in the business of developing station wagons could mean that family-orientated enthusiasts may indeed enjoy the best of both practicality and dynamics well into the inevitable electric future. It took me several hours by plane, train and automobile to make my way to Turin, Italy to sample a limited-edition supercar. When I eventually arrive, I’m greeted by a Cape winter in the middle of an Italian summer. Eish. Those familiar with rallying will immediately peg the car pictured. It looks very much like the triple world-championship-winning Lancia Stratos … except it isn’t. What it actually is, is a 21st century reimagining of the iconic rally machine. A few years ago, Michael Stoschek wanted to build a modern-day interpretation of his favourite rally car. As most wealthy car collectors would, the German enlisted the services of Italian specialists Pininfarina. The famed coachbuilders created a modernised version of the Stratos, even using its name as Lancia had not bothered to trademark it (how very Italian). Michael’s car was supposed to be a one-off, but demand eventually led him to grant production rights, for a run of just 25 units, to a small-scale manufacturer in Turin called Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT). MAT starts with a Ferrari F430 and skins it of all its body work. It then chops 200 mm out of the wheelbase. For good measure an FIA-spec roll cage is welded in to replace rigidity lost by removing the roof. Braces bolted between the bulkhead and rear shock towers also help to create a platform that is

Tested 1.indd 33 2020/02/06 12:44 PM yundai has had plenty to celebrate since the return of its Tucson nameplate Hback in 2015, from a forced hiatus badged as the ix35. The name Tucson has tons of brand cache in South Africa and it instantly ascended the sales charts to become Hyundai’s best-selling car in 2016 right through to last year. Now, with the current model on run-out, the Koreans have bolstered the range with a Sport derivative we’ve all been waiting for, available in either 1.6-litre turbo petrol or the more everyday 2.0 D turbo diesel with an eight-speed automatic we’ve been testing. But if you thought this diesel was some Euro-6 compliant vegan-friendly conveyance, think again! The chasm between the now discontinued 1.7-litre turbo diesel derivative, the regular 2.0 D Executive, and the Sport, couldn’t be vaster. 85 kW/280 Nm for the former, versus the 2.0 D’s 131 kW/400 Nm and finally 150 kW/460 Nm in the Sport. Drive is sent via an eight-speed automatic exclusively to the front wheels. To put that into context, were talking about a four-cylinder turbo diesel that’s a mere 15 kW/90 Nm down from the outputs of Volkswagen’s mighty V6 TDI used in its 4Motion equipped Amarok. We tested the fuel consumption over an extend-test period and

our Sport test unit returned 9.2 ℓ/100 km. The CO2 figure is a pretty hefty 164 g/km and the result is dark-roasted exhaust exits. Let us be the first to tell you that the sooty plumes of smoke that emanate from those quad tailpipes every time you manually

The turbo diesel top speed easily exceeds 200 km/h, although by how much we don’t know, but it’s the tractability in-gear POWER that’s mighty impressive. Once you’re on the move, 150 kW @ 4 000 going through the gears is an absolute pleasure. Any rpm, 460 Nm gear, anywhere between 1 750 and 4 000 rpm, and @ 1 750 rpm this thing hauls ass. We say this with the caveat that in first-, second- and third gear the throttle response PERFORMANCE and turbo boost is very sharp, too sharp in fact, and if TESTED you have any amount of steering lock applied, turning 0–100 km/h in 8.2 sec (tested) through a junction for example, you will spin up the inside wheel when that 460 Nm abruptly kicks in. TOP SPEED It’s advisable to drive with the eight-speed auto in 201 km/h manual and short shift before that turbo lights up. Drive like that and she’s every bit as competent TYRES as a diesel Tucson should be. In Eco mode (Sport and 245/45/R19 Comfort are your other options) the word ‘adequate’ Hankook Kinergy almost comes to mind, but the 20. D Sport is actually far better than that. The 2.0 D has a sweet, throaty ECONOMY engine note that you might even mistake for a petrol 9.2 ℓ/100 km (tested)

engine once it’s up to temperature. With clever multi-link rear suspension, a wider track, and our vehicle’s low-profile 19-inch rubber, there’s plenty of grip and the ride isn’t too badly compromised either. The easy-going electrically assisted power steering isn’t overstimulating for an everyday driver. Of course, with that low-hanging body kit and that painted-on rubber, we are not exactly going to tackle Swartberg Pass anytime soon, but beneath the anabolic look, it’s actually just a docile softie. In fact, having spent an extended amount of time with the Tucson Sport, I can say it possesses a real dual character … a bit like your Alsatian or pit bull terrier. Buyers will most likely be drawn to it for the Fast and Furious body kit – murdered-out rims, belching quad exhaust outlets and uprated power and torque. Meanwhile, on the inside, they will settle into the quality-built cabin and become wrapped up in the unerringly competent packaging. The 2.0 D Sport is an excellent car that offers more performance, convenience, and the poshest spec grade available. An approximately R100k price jump from the Tucson 2.0 D Executive (R572 900) might seem a large one, but it’s still half the price of a base-spec Range Rover Sport TDV6 that’ll set you back a cool R1.2 million

The F-Series accounts for half of Ford’s overall profit each year; Nissan’s positively archaic Hardbody bakkie is still its most profitable endeavour in South Africa, that’s why they continue to keep it on their books. Yup, bakkies are an avenue to untold mountains of cash! Why is the simple bakkie such a popular transport solution with consumers then? Well, aside from the commercial use, we believe it has to do with the frontier spirit that lives somewhere inside all of us. A bakkie makes you feel like a pioneer – forging ahead into uncharted territories. The limited-edition Volkswagen Amarok Canyon does exactly that, and captures that spirit while still being one the most high-tech bakkies on the market today. Since its launch a decade ago, Volkswagen got us used to the idea of an advanced, comfortable and desirable bakkie, and now they’re ramming the initiative home with the full-fat Canyon. Prime amongst its advances is the use of the potent, yet fuel efficient, 3.0-litre V6 TDI with eight-speed

Counter arguments levelled against the Volkswagen Amarok (mostly from Toyota Hilux diehards) surround the issue of reliability. That it’s a bit of a lightweight against the might of the tried and tested Toyota Hilux. Well, we can only test a vehicle for one week and in that time we have no way of really answering the question. However, we did drive our Canyon test unit every day for 955 km in total, until the fuel tank was empty, over every terrain available in the Western Cape, and it didn’t miss a beat. Tar roads, urban driving, motorways, gravels roads, sand, off-roading trails – it took it all in its stride. Our only criticism surrounds the ride quality, which wasn’t even all that bad considering the less than high-tech leaf-sprung rear suspension. It did became a bit of a bouncy castle depending on the frequency of the off-road corrugations, and lateral ride quality isn’t that composed while cornering. However, we’d still peg it streets ahead of other leaf- sprung competitors, although it’s not in the same league as the independently sprung Ranger Raptor. Also, we were not completely bowled over by the Canyon styling pack that blacks out the wheel arches, making it look narrower, more pinched than a conventional double cab. The model-specific 17-inch wheels also look a little lost in those cavernous wheel arches. Other than that we can’t think of anything

we’d change to make the Amarok any better. It’s : COURTESY IMAGES still quite a way off the sales phenomenon that is the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, but it’s making

a serious impact nevertheless. M PHOTOGRAPHY

oining the mightily impressive Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S is the lesser Taycan 4S Jbut it is by no means an underwhelming prospect. It is available with dual motors and two different battery options. With the standard ‘performance battery’ the Taycan 4S has a capacity of 79.2 kWh. The Taycan 4S has a healthy maximum output of 390 kW and is claimed to achieve a respectable range of up to 407 km, according to WLTP. Batteries fitted to the more expensive Turbo and Turbo S models are available with a 93.4 kWh capacity battery that is good for 463 km on the range indicator and can be had as an option on the 4S. Incredibly, with overboost mode engaged the power increases to 420 kW. That’s enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in four seconds and a top speed is reached at 250 km/h. SLIGHT AESTHETIC ADJUSTMENTS FOR THE 4S Visually the 4S only differs from its siblings in a few small details. In the basic model, the front apron is only available in black and the diffuser in the rear is not colour-coded either. The brake calipers are painted red in combination with the standard steel

Autobild.indd 46 2020/02/06 1:14 PM brake system. The entry-level Taycan comes standard with 19-inch rims, but the larger Taycan alloys are optionally available in a variety of designs. The same applies to the chassis options. Everything can be ordered for the 4S, from active roll stabilization to all-wheel steering. Regardless of the options specified the original Taycan design remains a clean and futuristic one that demands attention in a quietly-confident, understated manner. ON THE ROAD Once behind the distinctly Porsche steering wheel from the first few metres it becomes clear that the new Taycan 4S is indeed a real Porsche! Agile, engaging, fast and confidence-inspiring. The 4S sits wonderfully on the road and makes strong progress in all driving modes during the initial test drive. Interestingly, our test car was packed with all the bells and whistles that come as optional extras:

IN A roll stabilisation, all-wheel steering, and adaptive NUTSHELL sports suspension to name a few. The latter we’d Porsche Taycan highly recommend to ensure that your Taycan rides 4S and handles as best it could. Porsche that just It may be heavy but the essence of a sports car can be happens to felt in the way in which it can attack a winding road. be electric It’s a great all-rounder too, mastering a relaxed cruise in utter silence and refinement you’d expected from LOWS a luxury car as well as the enthusiastic dynamism Rear headroom is expected from a sports car around tight corners. Only compromised by the standard 19-inch alloy wheels somewhat reduce that swooping driving pleasure in the mountains, offering marginally roofline subdued steering feel. The upside however is that with larger tyre side-walls they pass on fewer lumps and bumps to the occupants. If you want the most sporty drive, you should invest in the 20-inch rims. The electric motors basically come from the already known Taycan Turbo models – one upfront and one powering the rear. The 4S uses the same inverters as the Turbo too, resulting in 300 amps for the front axle and 600 amps for the rear. The electric motors deliver instant and brutal torque to the wheels seemingly at all times, at any speed to propel the Taycan towards the horizon. If you want to come to a standstill again, you don’t have to be wary of the standard brake system bringing the heavy lump to stop. Thanks to the enormous regeneration braking power of up to 265 kW, the disc brakes are only used

rarely. Once you completely learn the system you can anticipate stopping for red robots without touching the brake pedal. The optional carbon-ceramic discs POWERTRAIN are really only required should you plan to visit the Dual synchronous racetrack regularly. The Taycan normally brakes electric motors completely with its electric motors regenerative power and is really something to experience, POWER especially if you haven’t driven a high-tech 390 kW, 640 Nm electric vehicle before. PERFORMANCE SPORTS CAR WITH ITS OWN SOUND 0-100 km/h in 4.0 sec Porsche has also developed its own electric motor sound specifically for the Taycan. It gives the driver TOP SPEED decent feedback and an indication of speed and 250 km/h acceleration. In Sport Plus mode, the sound becomes even more urgent. A nice audible touch is when the ECONOMY transmission on the rear axle is engaged, it sounds 0 ℓ/100 km like the manual shifting process, similar to that of a combustion engine from the interior. Overall, PRICE the sound of the Taycan 4S is futuristic, but by TBA no means exciting. SO THEN… The Porsche Taycan 4S meets most requirements for a large, fast GT sedan, not only as an electric vehicle but as a car full stop. What it has proven is that, much like the standard 992 911 Carerra, the ‘basic’ Taycan 4S is really fun too – regardless of the few options that are recommended for the chassis it’s still largely less expensive than the faster Taycan Turbo and manic Turbo S. In this case buying the entry-level model makes the most sense. M COURTESY IMAGES PHOTOGRAPHY

pril Fool’s Day runs one of two ways, you’re either the sucker getting fooled or theA master of the fools. With the advent of fake news it does seem like April Fool’s is a daily occurrence, however, motor manufacturers know how to keep it classy come the first of April. They go all out creating press releases, imagery and videos to support their prank. Some of them catch us completely unawares as we excitedly and irresponsibly (given the day) post about it on social media to the effect of ‘if you say gullible slowly it sounds like orange’. It’s okay, we said it slowly a few times too. HYUNDAI CLICKTOFLY In 2017, Hyundai informed us that we would now be able to purchase their models online and it would be delivered by an in-house Hy-drone – this was exclusively for cars purchased through Hyundai’s Click To Buy website. Click-to-Fly’s express delivery would be done by drone in less than two hours if their selected car was in stock. The Hy-drones would run on hydrogen using Hyundai’s Fuel Cell technology, GPS would be substituted by sophisticated aerospace technology – Martian Global Positioning System, used in Martian aviation. It took many readers and watchers of the ad several minutes to decide whether this was true or … wait, what? Martian aviation! Oh, it’s 1 April you say. TOYOTA YARIS ADVENTURE Toyota fooled many for April Fool’s Day 2019, and many South African’s who saw the news were genuinely excited, it was a Yaris bakkie! It’d rival the Nissan NP200 and the Corsa Utility. Features included 7.6-inch ground clearance, roof-mounted LED spotlights and aggressive styling features. Tongue-in-cheek digs in the press material at those who use the SUVs and bakkies for shopping said the Yaris Adventure was for those ‘who want to tell their friends they own a truck, but never veer off the pavement’. The load bay carrying capacity was reduced to ‘moderate’ weight and jobs only. In the list of added features there is no satnav as ‘anyone smart enough to drive the Yaris Adventure knows exactly where they’re going’. Our favourite line from Toyota is that the Yaris Adventure comes standard with roadside assistance as ‘it’s likely the truck will get stuck if it veers too far off the road’.

MINI HIPSTER HATCH In 2016, Mini fooled the majority of Cape Town and parts of Braamfontein with the announcement of the ‘world premiere of the MINI Hipster hatch’. Based on the Cooper, the Hipster would have everything to entice a … well, hipster. Colour options included Brooklyn Blue, Monochromatic Green or Organic Pumpkin with red-check detailing, like a lumberjack shirt. The interior would have stonewashed denim upholstery, no ordinary USB ports or CD player would do either, the Hipster would have a twin-deck cassette player for John Mayer to sound his best. According to the press release, the Hatch would meet demands ‘what those who refused to be catergorised want from a car’. Hold back the laughs. To qualify as a bona fide hipster, it would be offered with Instagram filtered windows for the perfect selfie and only have a fixed gear drive, like their beloved single-speed bicycles. The person behind all this was the senior external product launch experience curator at Mini UK – Ivana Newcarr. Genius.

FIAT PANDA HAWAII To celebrate the 10th anniversary in 2019 of the classic British TV show that drew a worldwide following The Inbetweeners, Fiat decided to pay homage with a limited edition Fiat Panda Hawaii. Based on the classic Fiat Cinquecento it would be available in bright yellow with a red pre-dented passenger door, just like Simon’s from the show. Limited to 1 419 models, they’d have black plastic bumpers, radio-casette player and powered by the ‘overhead valved’ 899 cc engine. Plenty of references to the show are included in the specs and details, though the ultimate giveaway as an April Fool’s prank was the ‘anti-collision squirrel system’ and ‘mild amphibious qualities’ should the Hawaii find itself in a pond for any reason. Incentive to buy a Fiat Panda Hawaii edition included free insurance to first-time teenage buyers, free tickets to Thorpe Park for you and three friends and you’ll get queue-jump passes to be first on the Nemesis Inferno. Who could say no?

BMW ReveRse ApRil Fools’ In 2015, BMW New Zealand put out an April Fool’s Day advert in the Herald newspaper for a fishy invitation to invite anyone to come into the dealership, ask for Tom and he would swap any old skorokoro for a brand-new 1 Series. The ultimate reverse April Fool’s prank, BMW wanted to see who would risk being taken for a fool. Tiaana Marsh decided to hedge her bets on the April Fool’s Day ad, and at 5:30 am she headed off to BMW’s New Market dealership. She walked in, went to reception holding her advert/coupon and asked for Tom. Imagine her delight as the advert turned out to be the real deal as Tom pulled back the cover on her brand new 1 Series hatch with the number plate No Fool. She arrived in an old Nissan Avenir and left in a 1 Series. Not a shabby trade-off. KiA ConCept i selF-Build There are plenty of car manufacturers worldwide that import all the parts of a car to assemble in a factory for the local market, commonly referred to as a knock-down kit. Kia took it a step further for April Fool’s in 2007 when it blended knock-down kits and the ultimate DIY challenge, the Kia Concept i Self-Build, or i’Kia – every pun intended there. The i’Kia would be sold as the ultimate DIY vehicle, and everyone believed them. The home tuners and tinkers were in their element – a vehicle you buy and assemble yourself? Must be Christmas and not 1 April. Customers would have a choice of engines, gearboxes, trim lines, and the type of body they were after – sedan, hatch, SUV, station wagon or even a bakkie. Depending on how you chose to ‘build’ your Concept i, customers would be given the corresponding modules to build. Imagine trying to build a car, which has an average of 30 000 parts, with a manual, spanner and Allen key. The Concept i peugeot RCZ Mood pAint In R5 stores countrywide you can buy a ‘mood’ ring, with would be sold thermotropic crystals that react to heat changes from twisting the band. new technology was a psychochromatic (someone’s been listening to Prodigy) coating or mood paint on the RCZ. A unique system that would reflect the driver’s emotions in the colour of the paint. The steering wheel of the RC-Z, which Peugeot deemed the perfect car given how it ‘inspired goose-bumps from it’s double-bubble roofline’, has sensors integrated into it. These sensors read your body temperature and pulse rate to change the exterior colour of the car accordingly. And how does the paint change colour? An innovative reactive paint that changes its molecular structure to emit light at different wavelengths, thus different colours. While this technology may have seemed

far-fetched enough in 2012, we’re not so sure it would pass as courtesy images an April Fool’s joke in 2020 given that Lamborghini is looking at a ‘self-healing’ exterior for minor bumps on the 2019 Terzo

he Dakar has completed its first year being held in Saudi Arabia, the first race of a five- Tyear deal. The 2020 entrant list saw a 5% increase in competitors to 351 vehicles; 170 quads and bikes, 134 cars and 47 trucks. Africa was well represented this year in the competition by Giniel De Villiers, Ross Branch, Conrad Rautenbach, Sean Berriman, Hennie de Klerk, Johann Smalberger, Aaron Mare, Stuart Gregory, Graeme Sharp, Wessel Bosman, Mike Horn and, for the first time ever, two African female entrants – Kirsten Landman and Taye Perry. The move to Saudi Arabia was met with varied response, a host of factors merged to create the need to accept Saudi’s offer to stage the Dakar there for the next five races. Chief amongst the driving factors was money, as the countries in South America simply don’t have the money required to assist with hosting the Dakar. Climate change was also a factor. The last few Dakars held in South America have been marred by extreme weather forcing stages to be cancelled and the wearing of gumboots in flooded bivouacs. The extreme weather forced riders to quit due to heat exhaustion and carry clothing for snowy conditions as they climbed to high altitudes. Enter Saudi Arabia, offering a home with plenty of extremes, favourable weather conditions, safety and lots and lots of wide-open spaces to go bundu bashing. The 2020 Dakar traversed 7 500 km in total, of that 5 000 km were special stages and four of them exceeded 450 km in length, which is a gruelling distance off road and the equivalent of driving 900 km on road. The 12-stage event had two even splits in terrain; the first half was dominated by tricky navigation and punctures galore for team Toyota Gazoo Racing, the second half moving into the dunes, which saw unmatchable pace from the Mini buggy and a spectacular roll down a dune for Fernando Alonso. The new location brought numerous changes, which, as crazy as they may have initially seemed, had plenty of logic around them from the organisers to stay true to the spirit of the Dakar. In recent years the finishing time gap between amateurs and pros has been increasing steadily. The original objective of this rally-raid event was to have amateurs and pros duelling it out on a level playing field. Big teams bring
