I would hope that the future brings new experiences for all, and that our association can reach out to encourage increased participation in our programs by working with the clubs to recruit from the schools within their specific region, be they primary or secondary, government or independent, boys and girls’ schools. Let us spread the news that cricket is an inclusive sport, from the basic introduction of skills to the competitive environment as players mature and appreciate the enjoyment of our great team game. THE 2017/18 SEASON THE CLUB COMPETITIONS I must report that team numbers last season were down on the prior year, which reinforces the need to be more active in the attraction of new players by all clubs within their respective areas. Some 126 teams participated in the nine age groups offered, and in the competition age groups, the premierships were spread across five clubs, with WPHCCC being successful in three of the competitions, Under 16, 12 and 11’s. Mt Colah were worthy winners in the Under 15’s, and the Under 14 Competition was won by the combined team from Kissing Point and Pennant Hills, in a very close final by just two runs from the Hornsby team. Hornsby, however, were successful in the Under 13 competition, completing a good season for the club. The Jonathon Myers Memorial Cup was won by Hornsby District. REPRESENTATIVE COMPETITIONS The HKHDCA representative program continues to provide the pathway for our more talented players across the age groups, and the exposure of these players to the higher levels is a most valuable experience. Within the DCA Representative Program, our Foster, Weblin and Watson Shield teams reached the Qualifying finals stage, with the Creak and Cawsey teams plating in the Semis. A good reward for the commitment of the players, managers and coaches who deserve every success that they achieve. However, it is not all about winning, much more the opportunity to experience the next level of competition and gain from that experience to develop the skills necessary to continue the progress. Our Margaret Pedan Shield (Under 15 Girls) continue their improvement and we look forward to their continued progress in the coming season, as is the case with all our teams in the representative arena. The IDCA Representative competition provided a further seven teams for our junior players to develop their skills from Under 10’s to Under 15’s and continues to function in its development role very effectively. GIRLS CRICKET This presents a very real opportunity for clubs to support the development of girls’ cricket within our association, capitalising on the groundwork laid by the WPHC, CHRSL and Thornleigh clubs led by Graham Chivers, Michael Hungerford and Veryan McAllister respectively. All clubs are encouraged to commit to making a real effort to promote our game to girls within their local schools, both primary and secondary and, I trust, be successful in developing a pathway for the new participants. Assistance has been offered by the above-mentioned people to anyone interested in taking this step forward and strengthening our association’s program to all prospective players within the schools in their area. Let’s do it. THANK YOU I must express my full appreciation to all who have given of their time to the enjoyment of junior cricket, be it at club level, representative level, managing, coaching or whatever role you may have performed throughout the past season. Our Association relies upon a very committed volunteer structure and it is essential that we foster the spirit in order that we continue to grow, in numbers and in providing the enjoyment that our game can bring to all participants. To those who have been at the heart of the organisation, notably Bruce Kimberley and Bruce Parker, I thank you for your commitment and the time you spend every year to promote our association’s programs. Geoff Hasler President HK&HDCA Representative Secretary’s Report 2017/18 Well done to the NSWDCA Shield teams, your performances delivered HK&HDCA second place in the Shell Shield for 2017/2018. I was personally extremely pleased with round 5 of the season, as for the first time as Representative Secretary, all NSWDCA Shield teams won their games in this round. The U10 Foster Shield, U15 Weblin Shield and U16 Watson Shield teams played in their Qualifying Finals. The U11 Creak Shield and U12 Cawsey Shield teams played in their Semi Finals. The U15 Weblin Shield team were unbeaten again in the qualifying rounds, with four wins and one draw. The U12 Cawsey Shield team won all 5 of their qualifying rounds games. This season was the last season for U10 Foster Shield, and the coming season will be the last season for U11 Creak Shield. CNSW under the Pathways program created by Cricket Australia, has removed these two age groups from the NSWDCA competitions. At the time of writing this report, we have no indication as to what form any future competition for these age groups will be. The Presidents Cup teams results improved further again on previous seasons. This season HK&HDCA came second in the Presidents Cup, even with an increase in the number of teams and Associations participating in the IDCA competition. The U12 Red Alfred James Cup team were the runners up in their competition. HK&HDCA again entered an U15 Peden Shield team this season, which included a number of talented young girls. This team is increasing in strength as the development of young female players within HK&HDCA progresses. Development has progressed to the point where HK&HDCA will be entering an U13 Mollie Dive Shield team next season. A number of changes were introduced into the HK&HDCA Representative program over the last few seasons, with some resistance. These changes have started to take effect and have moved HK&HDCA back up near the top of the NSWDCA Shield and IDCA Presidents Cup competitions. Congratulations to Naden Cooray who won the U11 Creak Shield NSWDCA batting award. Congratulations to Lachlan Shaw, Jack Nisbet, Corey Miller and Jayden Camp for selection in the NSW School teams for the School Sport Australia Boys National Championship in Brisbane. The following players were selected for the CNSW State Challenge Cup: U13 – Blake Harris and Oliver Jennings U14 – Cameron Tunks, William McFadden and Manas Bansal HK&HDCA also had a number of players selected for the CNSW Cricket Academy. They were: U13 – Peter Murray, Sidhant Singh and Lucas Sassen U14 – Cameron Tunks, William McFadden and Manas Bansal U15 - Corey Miller and Jack Nisbet Without the all the hard work from club administrators, coaches and managers, Reps would not be as successful as it is. Club coaches develop players batting, bowling, keeping, catching, fielding and general team skills, which the Rep coaches can then build a team around. The Rep coaches do not have the time to devote to fine tuning a batsman or bowler, we rely on the club coaches or specialist coaches to fulfill this part of a player’s development. Reps would not exist without the clubs, and the support they provide to their players and officials. The ongoing development of Reps is reliant on this continued support. So to all the club administrators, coaches and managers, thank you. I would like to thank all of the Umpires, especially Simon Moore who had the unenviable task of assigning Umpires to all of the games, and having to deal with last minute ground changes. In addition to our normal grounds Barker College allowed us the use of their ovals and training facilities, for which we are grateful. I would also like to thank our Representative sponsor, Eylex. Without the support of our sponsors we would not be able to supply a number of the resources we currently enjoy. The members of the Representative Committee, Rod Johnson, Judy Shaw, Simon Reynolds, Shayne Harris, Ravi Purushotham, Andrew Tunks, Paul McSweeney, Heidi Johnson and Duncan Barber had to deal with a number of challenging issues, which included numerous late night emails. For all of this, thank you. Due to the amount of work required to run a Representative program, the role of Representative Secretary has been split in two.

At that age, children and their parents are reluctant to move straight into competitive hardball cricket, but are looking for an introductory non-competitive skills and fun based structured program to introduce them to the present day game. This starting platform allows development of hand/eye co-ordination and cricket skills but importantly sees the child become active and socialising in a team/group environment. It also gives mums, dads and even grandparents an opportunity to participate and be involved in the activity with their children and thus build stronger family relationships – and, for the club, provides a source of parent volunteers in the future as the child advances through the junior age groups.
