First Grade reached the Limited Overs semi final, on the back of a stunning 48 ball century from Nic Maddinson in the quarter final at Campbelltown. Third Grade qualified for the Premier semi finals and the young Sixth Grade side also made the final four in the Metropolitan Cup. Congratulations to Mark Morley who was named by the SCA as joint Third Grade Captain of the Year, accompanying his award as the Easts Player of the Year. Easts’ Under 19 representatives at the National Championships then the World Cup were headed by Baxter Holt who has secured a Rookie NSW contract for next season. Peter Nevill, Harry Conway, Nic Maddinson and Will Somerville all played for NSW and Nevill, Conway, Somerville and Henry Thornton have all secured NSW contracts for next season. There was continued strengthening of the pathway for both boys via the Easts Academy, Green Shield and Grade, and for girls in the T20 Blast and Junior competition, seting up opportunities to pursue Women’s Senior cricket. Waverley Oval was superbly managed by the Green Options team and looks much improved with the addition of new sightscreens and we thank Cricket NSW, Waverley Council and the local AFL team for working with us to make this a reality. 10 ABOVE: LIFE MEMBERS WITH NEWLY PRESENTED COMMEMORATIVE CAPS Ladies’ Day and Old Boys’ Day were accompanied by the revelation of Honour Boards in the Tank, thanks to the research and hard yards from Dennis Hourn and Angus Palmer. A very successful annual Sporting Legends Lunch was held at the SCG where the Club acknowledged the lifelong contribution of Phil O’Sullivan OAM. Liz Thorp was the function mastermind and spread her wings brilliantly to manage this event along with inspiring the organisation of the Club’s Juniors program, which produced no fewer than four champion teams. Many thanks also to Marcus van Vugt and the dedicated Junior Commitee for all their work in growing and organising our Junior base. Easts Dolphins continues to give many players the chance to prosper and enjoy their leisure time, by playing cricket and developing strong friendships. Most of the support comes from a group of dedicated volunteers and a very hard working Commitee. A restructure of the Club’s management structure is planned, identifying key roles for each member of the commitee, and we are pleased to have Michael Bevan return to the Club as the new Director of Cricket Operations, reporting to the High Performance sub-Commitee. This structure will ensure a more efcient and robust management. In closing I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the ongoing success of Easts Cricket, particularly Club Secretary, Adrian Tham, who is stepping down afer four years in the role. Adrian, you have been superb. JIM MAXWELL President 11 SPORTING LEGENDS LUNCH 12 Waverley’s World War I Loss NORM CALLAWAY #131 The second batle of Bullecourt started in France 100 year ago on 3rd May 1917. The first batle, on the 11th April 1917, was “a disaster” according to the Australian War Memorial. Despite this, a further atack across the same ground was ordered for 3rd May. The Australians broke into and took part of the Hindenburg Line but no important strategic advantage was ever gained. In the two batles the AIF lost 10,000 men. One of these was Norman Callaway, who had just turned 21. Callaway was a cricketer who had played just one first-class match for New South Wales. However, in his only innings in that match, he scored 207. That was the last first-class match for New South Wales until the War ended. The match was against Queensland on the Sydney Cricket Ground. Queensland bated first and despite being 3-83 at lunch on the first day, 19th February 1915, its 1st innings yielded just 137 (James Sheppard 40, William Cullen 4-20, J.L. ‘Lyall’ Wall 4-44). New South Wales had three players making their debut, Cullen, Wall and Norm Callaway. Callaway came in with New South Wales in trouble at 3-17 afer the tall lef-arm fast-medium bowler Jack McAndrew had bowled Gar Waddy (0), Tommy Andrews (8) and Andy Ratclife (0). “From the first ball he swung the bat with great power and precision at anything within striking distance and the ball hummed to all parts of the field at an extraordinary pace”. (Sydney Morning Herald, 20/02/1915, p. 12) He and opener, Frank Farrar (27), added 41 in 13 minutes. He survived a “red hot chance” when 39, reached 50 in 67 minutes, his century in 94 minutes and slowed down towards stumps when he was 125 not out of 4-228 afer 130 minutes. He had been joined at 4-58 by Charlie Macartney and by stumps they had added 170 “at a clip which delighted everyone. And the strange part of the story is that the bifng and banging were not done by the litle man of might [Macartney], but by the colt making his first appearance in first-class cricket”. (Referee, 24/02/1915, p. 12) 13 An unwell Macartney had been missed first ball in the slips and at stumps he was 58 not out. The next day Callaway “immediately got busy”, but later, “for a quarter of an hour he got somewhat reckless, and was missed three times - at 163, 175 and 180 - deep at point, high at mid-of and wide at mid-on.
