Colleen Kattau, Associate Professor of Spanish at SUNY Cortland, is both a scholar and an accomplished performer of Nueva Canción. In this educational workshop she will present an overview of the movement, its origins, its de- velopment, and its impact, and she will illustrate her talk with a live performance. After a short break, Prof. Kattau will lead a one-hour Latin folk jam. All instruments are welcome. No previ- ous knowledge of either Spanish or Nueva Canción is required. At OSA Hall, 220 E. 23rd Street, suite 707, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, Manhattan. General admission: $15. FMSNY members or full-time students: $12. "Songwriters in the tradition of tradition" Traditional music has informed songwriters from Bach to Bob Dylan. Louise Luger will be performing music by songwriters who found their roots in the great traditions of folk music - including blues, country, Appalachian and Celtic tunes; and whatever's been sung on the porch or the road for generations. When Dylan first transformed a.m. radio songs from 'moons and junes' to the music of poetry, protest, innovation and discovery, Louise was led to explore the music that influenced him, and all the legions of songwriters he influenced. She will be singing songs by writers who are well known, and some who perhaps should be better known- including of course, Dylan; and talented musicians like Libba Cotton, Bill Staines, Jesse Winchester, Hank Williams, Iris Dement, Ryan Adams, Greg Brown and Utah Bruce Phillips. Louise sings in a strong, heartfelt and unadorned voice while accompanying herself on guitar, and occasionally harmonica. There will be a few sing alongs and the audience is encouraged to join in. She has performed solo concerts at many venues, including the Richmondtown Country Fair, the Perking Latte Cafe, the Art by the Ferry Fes- tival; and she has won Honors in the Bluegrass Competition at Paddy Reillys. She's Continued on next page - 2 - FMSNY Events Details- Continued also known as a songwriter herself, and will perform a few of her own compositions. On September 21st, Sheila Ewall attended the wedding of her cousin, Marissa. It was held at a lovely location in the Poconos that reminded Sheila of Camp Freedman. Sheila enjoyed the entertainment which included a ukulele duet featuring the bride and groom (Brendon) as well as a uke solo performed by Marissa. John Austin has four grandchildren: Julia (10 years old), Chelsea (7), Zeke (6) and Leo (4). After he first met each baby granddaughter, he wrote a special waltz for her. After he met each of the baby grandsons, he wrote ragtime tunes. The girls like “Zeke’s Rag” better than their waltzes. Charlie Urich writes: “Just to let you know, Pinewoods member and friend Irving Glazer is still a 2nd floor resident at the Fairview Nursing Care Center, 69-70 Grand Central Parkway, Forest Hills, NY 11375. Their main phone number is 718-263-4600. Visitors are appreciated. Irv is usually in the 2nd floor day room. It’s recommended that you call the facility before you visit and ask for the 2nd floor nursing station to confirm that he is there to be seen (as there were times he was hospitalized). I saw him on Columbus Day and he was in good spirits and smiled when I mentioned Pinewoods persons to him.” Jason Price (son of Anne and Wayne Price) has been involved in some very creative endeavors. Anne writes that Jason “has been freelancing as an animator. He worked on the animation for a children's TV pilot, which included characters such as Billy Banana, and he is now at work animating paintings which will be shown with a concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in February." Alex Kochanoff says that he was astounded to discover that something he wrote for Gardeloo (a folk music magazine) in 1958 was cited by Ronald D. Cohen in his book about Woody Guthrie. Cohen’s book, entitled Woody Guthrie: Writing America’s Songs, was published in 2012.
