    Stephen S. Wise and Golda Meir: Zionism, Israel, and American Power in the Twentieth Century Mark A. Raider* In his seminal study, The Idea of the Jewish State (1969), the historian Ben Halpern observes: “Israel, the Jewish state, is, of course, the child of Zionism.”1 Situating Zionism in the context of other modern nationalist struggles, Halpern argues that Jewish nationalism, notwithstanding its particular and even pecu- liar characteristics, is something of a cousin to other ethnic forms of national expression that arose in the mid- to late nineteenth century. The campaign for Jewish statehood, he further explains, was not only dependent on a variety of objective conditions and factors, but also on the capacity of emerging lead- ers to navigate a generally precarious and hostile global arena. The latter fun- damental political reality, Jehuda Reinharz argues, has, since Theodor Herzl, prompted Zionism’s strategy of forging a necessary link to a great power. It has also shaped the “historical dimensions” of the Zionist movement, the Yishuv (the pre-state Jewish community in Palestine), and contemporary Israeli soci- ety, while imbuing relations with the “great powers” with “a quasi-ideological significance.”2 Though Britain played a dominant role in Zionist policy mak- ing by the eve of World War i, and thereafter controlled Palestine until 1947, in this period the United States assumed an increasingly significant role in determining Zionism’s trajectory. In due course, as David Biale observes, the Zionist cause “transformed the nature of American Jewish politics,” and after the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948, “precisely because Israel [was] forced to become a major military power, American Jews [became] a direct party to superpower geopolitics” in the Middle East.3 Building on the foregoing important and useful observations, the present study reconsiders the cases of two towering historical figures who straddled the pre- and post-state periods: Stephen S.

    MonikaSchwarz-Friesel “Antisemitism 2.0”—The Spreading of Jew-hatredonthe World Wide Web This article focuses on the rising problem of internet antisemitism and online ha- tred against Israel. Antisemitism 2.0isfound on all webplatforms, not justin right-wing social media but alsoonthe online commentary sections of quality media and on everydayweb pages. The internet shows Jew‐hatred in all its var- ious contemporary forms, from overt death threats to more subtle manifestations articulated as indirect speech acts. The spreading of antisemitic texts and pic- tures on all accessibleaswell as seemingly non-radical platforms, their rapid and multiple distribution on the World Wide Web, adiscourse domain less con- trolled than other media, is by now acommon phenomenon within the spaceof public online communication. As aresult,the increasingimportance of Web2.0 communication makes antisemitism generallymore acceptable in mainstream discourse and leadstoanormalization of anti-Jewishutterances. Empirical results from alongitudinalcorpus studyare presented and dis- cussed in this article. They show how centuries old anti-Jewish stereotypes are persistentlyreproducedacross different social strata. The data confirm that hate speech against Jews on online platforms follows the pattern of classical an- tisemitism. Although manyofthem are camouflaged as “criticism of Israel,” they are rooted in the ancient and medieval stereotypes and mental models of Jew hostility.Thus, the “Israelization of antisemitism,”¹ the most dominant manifes- tation of Judeophobia today, proves to be merelyanew garb for the age-old Jew hatred. However,the easy accessibility and the omnipresenceofantisemitism on the web 2.0enhancesand intensifies the spreadingofJew-hatred, and its prop- agation on social media leads to anormalization of antisemitic communication, thinking,and feeling.

Thompsonn</> <CO>As a historian of the modern Middle East, I welcome Derek Penslar’s effort to “plac[e] Zionism in Asia.”1 First, he argues that Zionism as practiced in West Asia (Palestine) was not true settlement- colonialism, because settlers were not citizens of the colonial power ruling the territory (Britain). Then he turns to South Asia and to cultural analysis to argue that European Zionism shared similar roots and ideological values with Indian anti-colonial nationalism. On these bases, Penslar concludes that Zionists cannot be considered fully colonialist until after they founded the state State of Israel in 1948.</> My critique focuses on two related points. The first considers the argument’s key methodological pivot, Penslar’s distinction between practice and discourse, between sociology and history, and between sensibility and structure. His structural analysis of Zionism in Palestine remains distinct from his discourse analysis of Jewish nationalist writing in Europe. This spatial separation of method introduces critical distortions to Penslar’s presentation of Zionism in Palestine. If we look at what Zionists both said and did in Palestine before 1948, we find little European anti-colonialism and an intimate alliance of settlers with the British mandatory (colonial) state. My second point addresses the problematic limits to Penslar’s move of Zionism into West Asia. Colonialism is generally understood as a relationship; —that is, the institutionalization of practices that perpetuate the subordination of one people to another in a differentiated space.2 Penslar, however, neglects the other half of the Zionists’ encounter in 513 Palestine: the indigenous peoples, including Arabic-speaking Jews, Muslims, and Christians.

    Article Between Yerushalayim DeLita and Jerusalem— The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Jon Seligman Israel Antiquities Authority, Jerusalem 91004, Israel; [email protected] Received: 19 February 2020; Accepted: 18 March 2020; Published: 1 April 2020 Abstract: During excavations of the bimah (the platform for reading the Torah) of the 17th-century Great Synagogue of Vilna (Vilnius, Lithuania), an important memorial inscription was exposed. This paper describes the new finds associated with the baroque-rococo architecture of the bimah and focuses on the inscription and its meaning. The Hebrew inscription, engraved on a large stone slab, is a complex rabbinic text filled with biblical allusions, symbolism, gematria, and abbreviations. The text describes the donation of a Torah reading table in 1796 in honour of R. Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and of Sarah by their sons, R. Eliezer and Shmuel. The inscription notes the aliyah (emigration) of Ḥayim and Sarah to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel. The interpretation of the inscription shows the use of multiple messianic motifs. Historical analysis identifies the involvement of the Vilna community with the support of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Ottoman Palestine) and the aliyah of senior scholars and community leaders at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Amongst these figures were Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and Sarah, with Ḥayim ben Ḥayim going on to represent the Vilna community in the Land of Israel as its emissary, distributing charitable donations to the scholarly Ashkenazi community resident in Tiberias, Safed, and later Jerusalem.     Professor Aviad Rubin Fall 2017 [email protected] Tuesday 12:00-14:00 Religion and State in Israel and the Middle East Theoretical, empirical and comparative aspects Outline - The State of Israel represents a unique model of the state-religion relationship. On the one hand, since its independence Israel has challenged the dominant idea of separation between religion and state and instead granted the Jewish religion (alongside other minority religions) significant multidimensional recognition in the public and political spheres. On the other hand, the Israeli regime contains some crucial secular elements, including secular public education system, legal code and judiciary system. This course will explore different aspects of the Israeli model of religion and the state, its foundations, theoretical implications and applicability to other societies and religions. The first section will introduce basic theoretical concepts in the study of religion and the state. The second, most substantive section, will discuss the historical development and contemporary characteristics of the state-religion regime in Israel. The third section will be comparative in nature and examine recent political transitions in the Middle East, the role of religion in these transitions, and the ability of the Israeli case to serve as a role model for the state-religion relationships in emerging Arab regimes. Course Assignments (elaborate details and Q&A about the assignments will be provided in class). 1. Attendance and active participation in class discussions – 20/100 (Students are required to read all the reading materials, come prepared to class and take part in class discussions) 2.
