His performance of his Muse free skate wasn't his best, with a quad and just four clean triples, but his components score (93.42) was the highest of the event. His score of 274.27 is a new U.S. record and gave him his fourth career national title. Jay Adeff It wasn't as magical as Thursday's short program, but Jeremy Abbott's free skate won him a fourth U.S. title and second trip to the Olympics on Sunday at the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Boston's TD Garden. The 28yearold skater, who has announced this is his final competitive season, landed a quadruple toe loop and four clean triples including a triple Axeldouble toe combination in an emotional, finely nuanced program that earned 174.41 points. His 274.27point total was enough to hold off a charging Jason Brown, who won the free skate with an exuberant outing to Riverdance. http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2014/01/12/66520210/small-town-boy-abbott-earns-fourth-final-crown 1/4 6/30/2018 'Small-town boy' Abbott earns fourth, final crown | icenetwork.com: Your home for figure skating and speed skating.

But the skater himself has something to say to those people: Not so fast. In fact, Chen would rather not be included in discussions about the favorites in Greensboro. "This is my first senior nationals," the 15yearold said after his Wednesday morning practice. "I am basically here for the experience." The teen, who trains in Southern California under Rafael Arutunian, can blame himself for the hype. Sectional tallies are not generally comparable to international scores, but the monster number set tongues wagging that Chen, who was born May 5, 1999, might finish in the top three in Greensboro and be sent to the 2015 World Figure Skating Championships in March.

Performing a new free skate choreographed by Nikoli Morozov to Camille SaintSaëns' "Symphony No. 3," the 16yearold student of Rafael Arutunian opened with a quad toetriple toe combination, followed by a second quad. Five good triple jumps followed. Since last season, Chen has gained not only height, but speed and power, and his component scores averaged around 8.2. In his Michael Jackson short program Friday, Chen's quad toe was a bit shaky, but his six other elements were clean, including a safe triple axel, an excellent Level 4 step sequence (GOE's of mainly +2) and a good triple lutztriple toe combination.
