Salò Republic Collection MS 1724 & MS 2686 University Museums and Special Collections Service Salò Republic Collection MS 1724 & MS 2686 The collection includes material from different administrative departments. One group of files from the Ministero degli affari esteri contains around 350 documents pertaining to the requisition of properties for government use. Other sections include orders from the Ministero delle forze armate: Sottosegretariato di Stato per la marina, vehicle and travel permits from the Guardia del Duce, and anti-Allied and pro-Fascist propaganda from the Ministero della cultura popolare. There are also three passports issued by the regime, around 40 intercepted radio messages from Allied broadcasts, including from Reuters and from the Vatican radio, and twenty bulletins issued by the regime's news agency, the Agenzia Stefani. The Collection covers the year’s October 1943-April 1945. The physical extent of the collection is 1 box containing c. 500 items. Introduction In September 1943 the Italian government surrendered to the Allies, and subsequently declared war on Nazi Germany. Mussolini, freed from captivity by the Germans, was instructed by Hitler to set up a new Fascist regime in German- occupied northern Italy. This regime was a republic by default, since King Victor Emmanuel had renounced Fascism, and was officially called the Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana). It was based along the shores of Lake Garda, with most of the more important administrative offices located in the small town of Salò, and therefore came to be known as the Salò Republic. It lasted until the Allied forces and Italian partisans re-took the area in 1945, when Mussolini was captured and executed. He will do a report as follows. The promoters of Convention: Prof. Patricia. A. Johnston, Prof. Attilio Mastrocinque, Prof. Elisa Zentilini and some of the participants The Symposium was organized by Prof. Attilio Mastrocinque & Prof. Elisa Zentilini of University of Verona, by Prof. Patricia Johnston of Brandeis University of Massachusetts and by Prof. Lazlo Takacs of Catholic University of Budapest. Prof. Christopher Faraone of University of Chicago and Prof. Giovanni Casadio of Società Italiana di Storia delle Religioni participated in it. Famous scholars, and university teachers, and many researchers from various countries took part in it. 1 La Rocca di Lonato La Rocca or Castle of Lonato is a fortified X century building placed above the residential area of Lonato del Garda (province of Brescia) looking at Lake Garda. Counts of Montichiari were the first owners of the Castle, which is strategic in terms of military defense. In 1376, it became property of Scaligeri and Visconti successively. Barnabò Visconti strengthened the Castle by means of building of extended walls including the inhabited hamlet.

  • Energy Conservation, Renewable Energy Sources and Costs
ENERGY CONSERVATION, RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES AND COSTS INTRODUCTION In addition to a condition of absence of energy consumption for temperature conditioning, lighting and innovative electric household appliances, a building built on a new conception, can produce an excess energy, making it available to others. If most of the buildings were built by this conception, we would have completely solved the problem of energy, pollution and indiscriminate exploitation of fossil fuels. Energy conservation and renewables energy sources are undeniably the paths to which we have to turn with seriousness. To date, many hybrid building solutions have been proposed, usually characterized by a traditional building system working with the new systems, such as those of insulation, solar collectors or solar cell panels, which installed without sufficient coordination produce unnecessary raises of the construction cost. The concerns are always inevitable. One answer is an intelligent building using innovative materials that reduce the construction costs in comparision with the traditional hybrid construction. The application of these technologies will be evident in the creation of a center of excellence in Lonato, in agreement with the Province of Brescia and the town council of Lonato. BUILDING THE CURRENT SITUATION By now it is known that the Italian buildings heritage is composed of a significant amount of unsold new buildings built with traditional construction, while the majority of towns and cities are built around ancient villages and old towns. It becomes difficult to believe that these buildings protected by the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, will be abandoned in favor of the new buildings that have no value added, not even of a noticeable energetic kind.

  • Enjoy Culture, Nature and Relax on Lake Garda
11 JULY 2012 CATERINA POMINI 5605 ENJOY CULTURE, NATURE AND RELAX ON LAKE GARDA Lake Garda is a wonderful place to spend time. Go and get the opportunity to try/engage in sports such as windsurfing, sailing, kayaking or simply relaxing on a beach fronting crystal clear waters. Located halfway between Venice and Milan, the largest of the Italian lakes also boasts countless towns and villages where visitors can enjoy both nature and culture... This classic three-day itinerary takes you to Sirmione, Manerba del Garda and Gardone Riviera, all included in the province of Brescia. Very well known for its imposing Scaliger Castle, Roman ruins and thermal springs, Sirmione rises on a peninsula at the southern end of the Lake, which is said to house the ruins of Catullus' villa: the so- called Grottoes of Catullus. As mentioned above, the town is also well worth a visit for its thermal establishments , where you can relax and take advantage of a multitude of spa treatments. Surrounded by a moat, the charming 13th-century Scaliger Castle dominates the narrowest part of the Sirmio promontory and offers fantastic views over the Lake and the old town centre; the Fortress also houses a small museum with local finds from the Roman era and some Medieval artifacts. We recommend that you spend the night in Sirmione and leave for Manerba del Garda (approximately 40 minutes drive) very early on the morning after. According to the legend, the town was established in honour of the goddess Minerva. The most famous attraction in Manerba is definitely the Parco Archeologico Naturalistico Rocca di Manerba del Garda, an archaeological park and nature reserve protected by UNESCO.

  • The Brescia – Iseo – Edolo Railway
THE BRESCIA – ISEO – EDOLO RAILWAY The railway line Brescia-Iseo-Edolo is 103 Km long and it winds from Brescia to Adamello through Franciacorta, after riding along the coast of the Lake Iseo and after going across the Valle Camonica. This line was inaugurated after a lot of years of discussions and projects. The 21st of June 1885 the first train went from Iseo to Brescia via Passirano-Monterotondo. The way was 25 Km long. Overcoming a lot of technical difficulties (about 40 tunnels to dig and hundreds of bridges and viaducts to buy) and several economic one, the line was lengthen until Edolo in 1909. This new line was directed by SNFT (Railway and Tramway National Society). The opening of the line gave birth to new flows of goods. These flows brought the decision in 1911 to build a new stretch between Iseo and Rovato, in order to avoid the stretch very steep via Monterotondo and allowing goods to arrive easily to the line Milano-Venezia and so the whole land. At the same time a new junction stretch opened between Paderno and Bornato Calino. The events of the 1st World War pointed out also a military importance of this line: a lot of troop trains went up to the Valle Camonica transporting men, animals and supplies toward the front of Adamello. Meanwhile the SNFT went on with its expansionist policy. In 1932 the works on the line ended with the construction of the stretch Rovato- Soncino-Cremona, inaugurated step by step (in 1914 Rovato-Soresina; in 1926 Soresina- Cremona).
