Academy Board of Trustees member Peter Tichansky, who serves as president of the Business Council for International Understanding (BCUI), recently presented the award to Schoenfeld in a ceremony held at Times Square in New York City. Regarded as one of the world's leading strength and fitness experts, Schoenfeld is a lifetime drug-free bodybuilder and advocate of natural bodybuilding who has won multiple natural bodybuilding titles. Through his research, writing and speaking, he has expanded global awareness and knowledge of health and fitness. The Academy’s Dwight David Eisenhower Fitness Award is presented to a person who has shown outstanding individual or cumulative achievement in fitness and has contributed to the growth and development of sport fitness through outstanding leadership activity. President Dwight David Eisenhower founded the President's Youth Council on Sport and Fitness. This national committee served as the catalyst to the nation's fitness movement, and Eisenhower’s work is evidenced by the number of “physical fitness tests” being administered today to American youth. Schoenfeld is considered one of the leading authorities on body composition training, which includes muscle development and fat loss. The 2011 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Personal Trainer of the Year has worked with numerous elite-level physique athletes, including many top professionals. He is a best-selling author of multiple fitness books including “The M.A.X. Muscle Plan,” widely referred to as the “muscle-building bible;” “Strong and Sculpted;” “Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy;” “Sculpting Her Body Perfect;” “Look Great Naked” (Los Angeles Times bestseller and #1 on Amazon.com); and the “Women's Home Workout Bible.” Schoenfeld has appeared in such publications as Shape, Self, Fitness, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Woman's Day, Fit, The New York Times, New York Daily News, Gannett Suburban Papers, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Oxygen, Musclemag, Ironman, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and many others. He is a columnist for Muscular Development Magazine and serves as a regular fitness expert for numerous popular websites. He has appeared on over 100 television shows including FOX Newschannel, CNN Headline News, CBS Evening News, UPN News, Good Day New York, Good Day LA, CBS New York Live, NBC Live at Five, and Today in New York, as well as hundreds of radio programs. Schoenfeld is widely regarded as a “trainer of trainers.” He is an assistant professor in the exercise science department at Lehman College in the Bronx, N.Y., where he directs the human performance laboratory. He was previously a faculty and board member at the American Academy of Personal Training in New York City, a vocational school for fitness trainers. Schoenfeld is president of Global Fitness Services, which provides fitness consulting to institutions as well as producing the Scientific Muscle Newsletter and the Lookgreatnaked.com website. He is a popular lecturer, providing seminars and workshops in over 20 countries. Schoenfeld received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pace University, his master’s degree in kinesiology/exercise science from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. in health promotion and wellness at Rocky Mountain University, where his research focused on the mechanisms of muscle hypertrophy and their application to resistance training. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He is a member of the board of directors for the NSCA and is assistant editor-in-chief for the NSCA's Strength and Conditioning Journal, as well as serving on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the NSCA and achieved a fellowship with the organization. He has achieved multiple certifications as a personal trainer, including the NSCA, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), and CanFitPro. The IDEA Health and Fitness Association has named him a “master trainer.” The Dwight David Eisenhower Fitness Award is part of the United States Sports Academy’s Awards of Sport, which each year serve as “A Tribute to the Artist and the Athlete.” The Academy presents the awards to pay tribute to those who have made significant contributions to sport, in categories as diverse as the artist and the athlete in several different arenas of sport. The awards honor exemplary achievement in coaching, all-around athletic performance, courage, humanitarian activity, fitness, and media, among others. The Academy’s American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA) annually recognizes these men and women through its Sport Artist of the Year, Honorary Doctorates, Distinguished Service Awards, Medallion Series, Outstanding Athletes, and Alumni of the Year awards.
