POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Organist and Director Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Reports to the Pastor. 2. Work in partnership with the Pastor and Worship Team to develop and grow the music ministry of Haven Evangelical Lutheran Church. This is to include attendance at Worship Team meetings at the request of the Worship Chairperson or Pastor. 3. Select and provide organ/keyboard music for all Sunday morning services and other season services of the church year such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. 4. Be responsible for choosing all anthems and other music sung by the choir. 5. Oversee Handbell Choir Director, Children’s Chime Choir Director and Praise Team. 6. Work cooperatively with the Pastor to choose and liturgical music. 7. Provide organ music for all weddings and funerals held at the church, consulting with wedding couples or families if requested. For these services, they will receive compensation from the family or couple. The services of another organist may be used with the permission of the regular organist. 8. Oversee maintenance and repairs of all musical equipment, i.e., the organ, keyboard(s), handbells, chimes and choir robes. 9. Accompany and direct the adult choir in one rehearsal per week toward participation in worship each Sunday, September – May. In addition, prepare the choir for special services throughout the church year such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, as determined by consultation with the Pastor and Worship Team. 10. Arrange for and schedule appropriate music for worship during June, July and August. 11. Arrange for competent substitute when unable to be present in consultation with the Pastor and Worship Team. 12. Actively recruit new members to the Adult Choir from within the membership and the wider community, providing an atmosphere of musical learning, growth and mutual care. 13. Purchase and maintain all music and music supplies for the Adult Choir, limiting the expenditures to the amount provided in the church budget. 14. Plan and provide an annual music event (special worship service, festival, choir concert) for congregational involvement and community outreach. Skills and Qualifications: 1. Comprehensive musical training with demonstrated proficiency on the and keyboard instruments sufficient to play hymns, liturgy and anthem accompaniments at sight. 2. Experience and competency in choral conducting. 3. Knowledge of appropriate (classical, contemporary, folk and gospel) and the role of music in Lutheran worship. 4. Knowledge of basic music theory, including simple transpositions or harmonizing a melody. 5. Ability to sing and play with accurate pitch and rhythm. 6. Knowledge of the Lutheran liturgies and ability to match appropriate keyboard music with the themes of the Church Year. 7. Experience as a “team player” and ability to relate to other with good interpersonal skills. 8. Familiar with handbells and chimes.
