McGrath IAP/TWAS, ICTP campus, Strada Costiera 11, 34151 Trieste, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT A photographic survey of butterflies (Lepidoptera Rhopalocera) was carried out over a period of three years (2011, 2012 and 2013) in an area around the villages of Malchina, Ceroglie and Slivia, the municipality of Duino-Aurisina near Trieste, in the Friuli Venezia-Giulia region, northeast Italy. Historically, this area of the Triestine karst has been influenced by human activities. Grazing intensity, however, has declined over the past 50-100 years, leading to encroachment of the forested areas over previously more open grasslands. During the three- year survey period, sampling intensity, measured as the number of days during which butter - flies were observed and/or photographed, increased from year to year. In 2012 and 2013, especially surveys began in February and continued into December. During the three years, a total of 79 species (Papilionidae, 3; Pieridae, 11; Lycaenidae, 17, Riodinidae, 1; Nymphal- idae, 37, including 15 Satyrinae; and Hesperiidae, 10), including seven listed as either endangered or near-threatened in Europe, were identified. Among the species of European conservation value recorded were: Scolitantides orion , Melitaea aurelia , Melitaea trivia , Argynnis niobe , Hipparchia statilinus , Coenonympha oedippus and Carcharodus floccifera . Strong local populations of the following regionally threatened, declining and/or protected species were also recorded: Euphydryas aurinia , Brintesia circe , Arethusana arethusa , Hipparchia fagi , Pyronia tithonus and Coenonympha arcania . -

It is based on a concatenated alignment of the mitochondrial gene COI and up to 11 nuclear gene fragments, using Bayesian inference of phylogeny. To avoid analytical biases that could result from our region-focus sampling, our European tree was grafted upon a global genus- level backbone butterfly phylogeny for analyses. In addition to a consensus tree, we provide the posterior distribution of trees and the fully-concatenated alignment for future analyses. -

Butterflies of Albania – Fluturat e Shqipërisë. New surveys, new species and a new checklist (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) Sylvain Cuvelier, Laurian Parmentier, Anila Paparisto & Jurgen Couckuyt Abstract. Three new butterfly species were recorded for Albania during two recent surveys: Pyrgus andromedae (Wallengren, 1853), Colias caucasica (Staudinger, 1871) and Leptidea juvernica Williams, 1946. Also Boloria titania (Esper, 1793) is new for the current Albanian territory that had previously been described by Rebel from the historical, larger Albania but situated now in Kosovo. Two data deficient species from the last checklist are confirmed: Carterocephalus palaemon (Pallas, 1771) and Hipparchia semele (Linnaeus, 1758). The status of six species is changed from present to data deficient or potential presence because of lacking recent evidence: Pontia chloridice (Hübner, 1813), Satyrium pruni (Linnaeus, 1758), Neptis rivularis (Scopoli, 1763), Euphydryas maturna (Linnaeus, 1758), Coenonympha glycerion (Borkhausen, 1788) and Kirinia climene (Esper, 1783). The geographical distribution for Pseudochazara tisiphone Brown, 1980 is significantly expanded to central Albania. Dot distribution maps are provided for all Albanian butterfly species. In addition to the new data, the available literature is screened, resulting in a mandatory update of the checklist for the Albanian butterflies: 196 species with recent evidence, 4 are data deficient and at least 9 have the potential to be discovered with future surveys. Albertano A mia madre 1 Riassunto Il genere Hipparchia Fabricius è uno dei generi tassonomicamente più difficile dei satiridi paleartici. Esso comprende gruppi di taxa con caratteristiche esterne simili, ma con profonde differenze nei genitali maschili e negli androconi. Studi pregressi sul comportamento hanno evidenziato in alcune specie l’esistenza di un corteggiamento articolato per l'accoppiamento. La maggior parte delle volte, le sequenze di corteggiamento rilevate sono comparabili tra specie, ma possono presentare differenze nell’esecuzione e nell’ordine dei moduli comportamentali comuni; in altri casi, invece, sono caratterizzati da moduli esclusivi che presentano solo determinate specie. L’isolamento riproduttivo fra due specie è il risultato di un gran numero di meccanismi, più o meno indipendenti gli uni dagli altri, e l’importanza relativa dei vari fattori può cambiare da un gruppo di specie all’altro. La riproduzione tra specie animali, soprattutto simpatriche e strettamente affini, è comunemente impedita da una serie di fattori ecologici, comportamentali e citogenetici.
