  • About the London Beth Din Published on United Synagogue (
About the London Beth Din Published on United Synagogue (https://www.theus.org.uk) About the London Beth Din Jewish life in England goes back almost 1000 years. It is believed that the first Jews were brought over from Normandy by William the Conqueror in 1066; there is reference to Jews in Oxford as early as 1075 and the Doomsday Book of 1086 records the Jew Mennasseh owning land in Oxfordshire. Several Baalei Tosafot (commentators) lived in England including R.Yaakov Mi’Orleans, (martyred in London at the coronation of Richard the Lionheart in 1189), R. YomTov Mi’Yoigny, author of Omnam Kein recited on Yom Kippur Maariv (martyred in the York massacre of 1190) and the R'i Mi’Londri, who is mentioned in the Remo in Hilchot Pesach (Siman 473 Sif 76) as recommending that the Hagadah be recited in the vernacular. In 1290, however, Jewish life in England came to abrupt end when the Edict of Expulsion was proclaimed by King Edward I, resulting in the banishment of the entire Jewish population from Britain. The Edict was issued on 18th July, which fell on Fast of Tisha B'Av. England remained "Yudenrein" free of Jews until 1656 when R. Menashe Ben Israel successfully petitioned Oliver Cromwell to allow the readmission of Jews. It is said that Menashe Ben Israel pressed Oliver Cromwell on the grounds that England -Angleterre- was one of the four "angles" of the earth referred to in the prophecies of the ingathering of the exiles, and thus resettlement would hasten the coming of the Messiah! Within only 50 years the offices of the Chief Rabbi and the London Beth Din came into being to provide a central religious authority for Jewish communities in London and throughout the United Kingdom - a role reflected in the London Beth Din's official title "D'Kehila Kedosha London Bet Din Vehamedina" - The Beth Din of London and the Country.

ww ww VOL. y h / NO. 7 IYAR 5771 / MAY 2011 s xc THEDaf a K ashrus a monthlyH newsletter for th e o U r a bb inic field representative DAF NOTES On Sunday, March 27, for the first time, the Harry H. Beren ASK OU OUTREACH Kashrut Shiurim were presented to the Sephardic community at Bnei Shaare Zion in Brooklyn, NY. The OU Poskim, Rav Hershel Schachter and Rav Yisroel Belsky, both discussed the current Pesach status of enriched white rice for those who are permitted to eat Kitniyot on Pesach. These discussions sparked much interest in the Sephardic community. Although by now, Pesach is behind us, the Daf feels it important to share with its readers the research Rabbi Gavriel Price has made on this subject in the article below, as well as the accompanying Teshuva written by Rav Schachter Shlita. Rav Schachter writes in his Teshuva that the potential Chametz in rice that is produced by several major US manufacturers would be Botul before Pesach. How- ever, it is proper for Sephardim to wash the rice to remove the possible Chametz in the added vitamins. It is preferable for Sephardim to use any unprocessed brown rice or white rice with an acceptable Kosher L’Pesach certification as found in Eretz Yisroel, for those permitted to eat Kitniyot. Please refer to the Teshuva for the reasons Rav Schachter gives for these Psokim. Parboiled, pre-cooked, boil-in-a-bag, and converted rice are either pesach statUs naturally enriched or use a special method of enrichment that will of enriched white rice not be discussed here.

BET DIN-Rabbi Gabriel Cohen Rav”D This RABBINICAL COURT is a respected and accepted BET DIN worldwide. It was founded in 1983 with the encouragement of the Chief Rabbis of Israel. We have our own ordained, efficient, honourable and respected staff to do all services offered, including Gittin (Jewish Divorces). Our staff includes members of all denominations: Chassidim, Ashkenazim, and Sephardim. Every organization, Rabbi, and community leader endorses our genuine work. GITTIN, JEWISH DIVORCES: Our policy is to help anyone in need, an Agunah or an Agun finalize his or her divorce anywhere in the world. We are local and we use strictly local rabbis thus we are able to supervise and follow up. We perform different services befitting the individual requesting them. For example with Ashkenazim we do an Ashkenazi Get, and with Sephardim we do a Sephardi Get as required by Halacha, by the Gedolei Hador. TEUDAT RAVAKUT, MARRIAGE, COUNSELING certificate of Jewish status, certificate of marital status, translations from many languages, and replacement of lost, ruined or faulty Ketubot are among our services. CIRCUMCISION: By certified Mohalim banning the use of a clamp. FINANCIAL ARBITRATION: Only Rabbis who actually hear the case firsthand from the parties involved are consulted to advise on the decision of the Bet Din. No matter how small or how large the claim is, it is dealt with in the same way. We strive to remain neutral and independent.

  • The Iconic Maxwell House Haggadah, from 1932 to Mrs
CULTURAL HISTORY IN THE SUPERMARKET: THE ICONIC MAXWELL HOUSE HAGGADAH, FROM 1932 TO MRS. MAISEL By Peter Levitan From “The Global Haggadah” by Peter Levitan The iconic Maxwell House Haggadah was first introduced by the Maxwell House company in 1932. It is the best known and most widely used Haggadah both among American Jews and throughout the world, with over 50 million copies in print, and one million copies being distributed in 2006 alone. But how did this cultural icon come to be? The Maxwell House Haggadah was conceived as part of a marketing campaign for Maxwell House’s coffee aimed at Jews. During the 1920’s, Maxwell House found that its large base of Jewish customers weren’t buying their coffee during Passover, under the mistaken notion that coffee beans are kitniyot – a legume or bean that is not kosher for Passover for Ashkenazic Jews, then the overwhelming majority of American Jews. Jewish grocery stores would put away coffee with the chametz under the mistaken assumption that coffee beans were kitniyot, when in fact they are botanically a fruit. In 1923, the company got Joseph Jacobs, an advertising manager for the Forverts, to run an ad assuring readers that Maxwell House coffee was kosher for Passover, based on a certification that Jacobs obtained from an obscure Lower East Side rabbi certifying that coffee was fine to serve following the Seder dinner. In 1932, Jacobs, who had now established his own advertising firm that specialized in marketing to Jewish consumers, convinced Maxwell House to print and distribute its own haggadah and distribute copies in-store with the purchase of its coffee.
