  • About the London Beth Din Published on United Synagogue (
About the London Beth Din Published on United Synagogue (https://www.theus.org.uk) About the London Beth Din Jewish life in England goes back almost 1000 years. It is believed that the first Jews were brought over from Normandy by William the Conqueror in 1066; there is reference to Jews in Oxford as early as 1075 and the Doomsday Book of 1086 records the Jew Mennasseh owning land in Oxfordshire. Several Baalei Tosafot (commentators) lived in England including R.Yaakov Mi’Orleans, (martyred in London at the coronation of Richard the Lionheart in 1189), R. YomTov Mi’Yoigny, author of Omnam Kein recited on Yom Kippur Maariv (martyred in the York massacre of 1190) and the R'i Mi’Londri, who is mentioned in the Remo in Hilchot Pesach (Siman 473 Sif 76) as recommending that the Hagadah be recited in the vernacular. In 1290, however, Jewish life in England came to abrupt end when the Edict of Expulsion was proclaimed by King Edward I, resulting in the banishment of the entire Jewish population from Britain. The Edict was issued on 18th July, which fell on Fast of Tisha B'Av. England remained "Yudenrein" free of Jews until 1656 when R. Menashe Ben Israel successfully petitioned Oliver Cromwell to allow the readmission of Jews. It is said that Menashe Ben Israel pressed Oliver Cromwell on the grounds that England -Angleterre- was one of the four "angles" of the earth referred to in the prophecies of the ingathering of the exiles, and thus resettlement would hasten the coming of the Messiah! Within only 50 years the offices of the Chief Rabbi and the London Beth Din came into being to provide a central religious authority for Jewish communities in London and throughout the United Kingdom - a role reflected in the London Beth Din's official title "D'Kehila Kedosha London Bet Din Vehamedina" - The Beth Din of London and the Country.

  • My Encounter with the Rebbe טילש
בס"ד My Encounter שליט"א With The Rebbe By Zalmon Jaffe 24th Installment Shovous 5752/1992 until Shovous 5753/1993 INTRODUCTION Shnas Nissim Godolim - 5753 Shnas Niflo'os Gedolos The Year of GREAT MIRACLES The Year of GREAT WONDERS Once again, I have great pleasure in submitting to you, for your enjoyment and edification, the twenty fourth instalment of "My Encounter with the Rebbe, Shlita." As usual, it takes the form of a diary with the sequence of events in the order in which they occurred. In the introduction to my last year's instalment, number 23, I did warn my readers that although the Rebbe's health was improving every day, (B.H.), a complete recovery would take a little longer than was at first anticipated. On August 25th '92, Dr. Ira Weiss reported to me that, "The Rebbe did have survival problems which were very worrying to him." "But, T.G., they are not problems any longer. The Rebbe is now making urgent efforts to speak, beginning to mumble, and wants to communicate." "We shall not get back everything that we lost but we shall all be well satisfied with the results." In the nine months since that report was issued, the Rebbe has continued to make good progress but he has suffered a great deal. And yet - throughout this period, it has been very noticeable that the Rebbe has attended to all his normal traditional and routine activities with his usual thoroughness and promptness. When one considers that the Rebbe's workload is expanding and increasing every week at an amazing and rapid rate, one may really appreciate how the Rebbe has been managing to deal with these added pressures in spite of difficulties in communication.

  • Kosher Guidelines Manual VEGETABLES
Houston Kashruth Association : Kosher Guidelines Manual This manual serves as an addendum to all client contracts and is a reflection of HKA policies. It must be stated once again that all ingredients and food products must be pre approved by an HKA rabbinic Supervisor and the fact that the guidelines may declare that the item is acceptable does not supersede the need for rabbinic approval. VEGETABLES 1. Artichokes - Fresh, frozen and canned artichokes are not to be used without reliable hashgacha with the exception of artichoke bottoms. All artichoke bottoms are permissible when packed in water, with exception of canned product from China. 2. Asparagus – Green – Fresh must have the tips cut off. Canned & frozen only with a reliable Hashgacha. 3. Asparagus – White- All are permissible without further checking after rinsing with water. Canned & frozen only with a reliable Hashgacha. 4. Barley - (Raw Dry) - Barley may become infested at the food warehouse or retail store or even in ones own home due to prevailing conditions such as humidity, temperature and other insect infestation. As such, one should always make a cursory inspection of the barley before purchasing (if possible) and before use, the barley should be placed in a bowl of cold water for a short time to remove any possible insects. 5. Beans(Canned) - Requires a reliable hashgacha. 6. Beans (Green Beans and String Beans) Fresh - A general inspection is needed to rule out obvious infestation. All frozen are acceptable. Canned require a reliable hashgacha. 7. Beans (Raw Dry)- Dried do not require kosher supervision unless flavorings are added.
