We can choose to make our love for the world be what our lives are really about. Each of us now has the opportunity, the privilege, to make a difference in creating a world that works for all of us. It will require courage, audacity, and heart. It is much more radical than a revolution – it is the beginning of a transformation in the quality of life on our planet. What we create together is a relationship in which our work can show up as making a difference in people's lives. Among us is a wide range of doctors who specialize in a variety of medical fields, representatives from numerous scientific associations, some being association presidents, members of the board of directors, and some here representing their respective presidents. In addition, you may represent a range of backgrounds, nationalities, ethnicities, cultures, educational levels, and professional skills. All rights reserved. 19 April 2019 14 Being In A New World Being In A New World As extraordinary as it may sound, by the end of this course you will find yourself actually being in (dwelling in) anewworld. Given that this is a course on leader and leadership, we are obviously speaking about your dwelling in (being in) the world of being a leader and exercising leadership effectively. In the phrase “the world of leader and leadership”, what we mean by “world” is what is meant by “world” in the following examples: the world of medicine, the world of football, the world of art, the world of plumbing, and the world of management. The formal meaning of the term “world” as used in the previous examples is: a coherent sphere (realm) of interest and activity, where critical know-how and competent action – and even mastery – become possible. © Copyright 2008 - 2019 W. All rights reserved. 19 April 2019 15 Being In A New World Being In (Dwelling In) A New World To clarify the phrase “be in a new world”, the word “be” is defined in Webster’s (1998) as “live” and “exist”; so to be in a world would be “to live in that world” or “to exist in that world”. To clarify the phrase “dwell in a new world”, the word “dwell” is defined as “live”, “reside”, “make one’s home”. So, to dwell in a world would be to “be part of that world”, to “be at home in that world”, to “come from that world”, to “reside in that world”. Obviously being in a new world and dwelling in a new world are speaking about the same thing from slightly different perspectives. It is relatively obvious in any serious discussion with someone who performs outstandingly in any field that that performer is completely at home in his or her world.
