Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Dr. William Ferris Dr. Robert Cantwell Dr. Patricia Sawin © 2009 Ashley Denise Melzer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ASHLEY MELZER: Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music (Under the directions of Dr. William Ferris, Dr. Robert Cantwell, and Dr. Patricia Sawin) This thesis investigates the relationship between the modern old-time and alt.country movements through the comparison of four different female musicians: Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case. These four women often pull from the same wellspring of old-time songs/structures/sounds, but their instincts come from exceptionally different places. The disparity between the ways they approach their music, reveals how the push toward modern capitalist industrialism has affected how different artists and communities access and transmit those old-world icons and sounds. Furthermore, their engagement specifically with the topic of gender exposes key tactical differences. Old-time musicians, Washburn and Gellert, work within the strictures of tradition so as to remain in dialogue with their community. Abstract This thesis analyzes facets of resistance in the lyrics of female country music performers and explores how their articulations of female resistance draw on and rework Appalachian folk traditions within country music. Beginning with the musical practices of Appalachian women, who used music to lament their lives restricted by domestic responsibilities, this thesis examines expressions of female resistance through lyrical analysis, with a concentration on female country performers from 1995 to the present. Despite evolving into a performance tradition, female resistance in country music continues to address the lived experiences of its female audience. As such, the female resistance tradition is an enduring component of country music that has addressed women’s issues for over a century.

While these prevailing musics continue to inform most popular and scholarly understandings of the region’s musical heritage, many contemporary scholars dismiss such narrow definitions of “Appalachian music” as exclusionary and inaccurate. Many researchers have, thus, sought to broaden current understandings of Appalachia’s diverse contemporary and historical cultural landscape as well as explore connections between Appalachian and other regional, national, and global cultural phenomena. HISTORICAL SKETCH The Missouri State Old Time Fiddlers Association is a nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of "that genre of fiddle playing and accompaniment unique to the musical tradi- tions of the State of Missouri, and known as Missouri old time fiddling ...." Its members seek to provide information and assistance to individuals and groups in the state who are sponsoring or organizing old time fiddling contests and events. They are also interested in "promulgating, dis- seminating, and otherwise popularizing Missouri old time fiddling music" through publication in written or phonographic form as well as "providing a forum for the determination of a consensus of thought among... contest participants concerning contest rules, formats, and scoring proce- dure." They produce an annual calendar of fiddling contests and events that is distributed to the membership. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The bulk of the collection dates from the late 1970s on.
