My tenure as Chairman, which completes a long E - NEWSLETTER: FEBRUARY 2 0 1 7 GANDHIDHAM BRANCH OF WIRC OF ICAI professional journey of 10 years since 2007, has been full of special moments, which I would cherish for all times to come… My term as Chairman has been truly a learning experience. I have tried to transform my tenure into a worth-reading Chapter in the history of our Branch and wish that all such chapters to be written in future turn out to be golden ones for the Branch and its members.' This year we Grew Bigger and Better I believe that with every rising sun, you rejoice at a journey that has begun, and with every setting sun, you rejoice at the victories that you have achieved and the paths that you paved for victories the next day. I am handing over the baton of Branch leadership to my successorin this very spirit, with much to rejoice for. We have indeed come a long way in a short span of one year. I am proud to say that the Gandhidham Branch is today a more robust, energetic and futuristic organisation than a year ago. I am happy to recall that in the last one year during which I led the glorious journey of our Branch, it has not only grown bigger and better but has also paved way for a brighter tomorrow for the members and profession. There has been a phenomenal rise in status, prestige and image of Gandhidham Branch in public eye. When I took over the reins of the Branch, I had a mission of Moving towards New Frontiers with the ultimate vision of excellence. I am proud to say that we have accomplished most of the Mission 2016- 17 with panache. Today I am contented that 2016-17 proved to be a path- breaking year in this respect. Besides this, we have not only set several milestones and overcome many challenges with the spirit of true partner in nation building but also triumphed many hitherto unchartered territories of professional capabilities in various spheres of the economy and society. E - NEWSLETTER: FEBRUARY 2 0 1 7 GANDHIDHAM BRANCH OF WIRC OF ICAI Special Thanks.... These achievements were not possible without the active and unflinching support of CA Kartik Varaiya as Vice Chairman, CA Animesh Modi as Secretary, CA Rajendra Shah as Treasurer, CA Karan Thacker and CA Jyoti Harsh and all my colleagues in the Profession. I humbly thank all of them. I also express my gratitude towards Past Chairman and other well-wishers for their encouragement and support. On a personal note I also take this opportunity to say special thanks to my parents, whose motivation and inspiration has kept me committed to our profession for more than decades. I am also indebted to my wife and children understanding my overbearing pre-occupation with the affairs of our alma mater Branch, and their unfathomable and inexpressible support and encouragement in the process. I am not going to give you list of achievements by our branch during 2016-17. Rather, I will convey my gratitude to members and students for reposing faith on me and making each and every event a grand success by participating in large numbers. As I Bid Adieu, I Feel Overwhelmed by your Love.... As I sign off as Chairman of Gandhidham Branch of ICAI, I feel overwhelmed by the love and affection showered on me and the confidence reposed in me by all of you. I would particularly remember the great warmth demonstrated by members during the seminars and workshops and the love and respect shown by students whom I met at different programmes. The most satisfying and rewarding thing was the loud accolades I received for my path-breaking and offbeat initiatives. All this has been the source of my strength and has energised me to work aggressively for the cause of the profession. On a personal front also, my Chairmanship has been a cauldron of rich, vivid and heart- warming experiences-professionally, personally, mentally, culturally, geographically as well as in culinary terms. These included meeting President of ICAI, Vice President of ICAI, Ministers, all regulators, bureaucrats, ambassadors and members and students from different cultures across the branch. It was enlightening to see how our profession has made deep inroads into E - NEWSLETTER: FEBRUARY 2 0 1 7 GANDHIDHAM BRANCH OF WIRC OF ICAI Indian polity, policy making and different levels of economy and society, and binds so many cultures, time-zones and people together. During this journey I had some never-before experiences like tasting variety of cuisines, having little sleep, no exercise, no leisure, travelling through the deserts in Rajasthan and through hills, plains, plateaus and mountains in extreme weather conditions by road, air, water and train. and getting stranded at the airports. Let me share with you that on occasions I have been seen as too demanding and too perfectionist, which perhaps is right in view of ever-rising expectations from our stakeholders and the need for a Chairman to be a role model for fellow professionals. To honour the Chairman’s image I did try to project myself as best as I could because unless a man inspired himself to greater achievements how can he inspire the world around him. My term as Chairman has been truly a learning experience during which I could understand the challenges and potential of our profession in a better way. I have tried to transform my tenure into a worth-reading Chapter in the history of our Branch and wish that all such chapters to be written in future turn out to be golden ones for the Branch and its members. I assure all of you that I will use my insights gained as the Chairman for the betterment of the profession and branch and will always be available for all of you. अछाचलताहूँ दआओंमु यादरखना मेरेजीकरकाजबांपेवादरखनाु दलकेसंदक!मू मेरेअछेकामरखना "च#ीतार!मभी मेरातूसलामरखना Adieu! Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 21 (2017) Item Girls and Objects of Dreams: Why Indian Censors Agree to Bold Scenes in Bollywood Films Tatiana Szurlej The article presents the social background, which helped Bollywood film industry to develop the so-called “item numbers”, replace them by “dream sequences”, and come back to the “item number” formula again. The songs performed by the film vamp or the character, who takes no part in the story, the musical interludes, which replaced the first way to show on the screen all elements which are theoretically banned, and the guest appearances of film stars on the screen are a very clever ways to fight all the prohibitions imposed by Indian censors. Censors found that film censorship was necessary, because the film as a medium is much more popular than literature or theater, and therefore has an impact on all people. Indeed, the viewers perceive the screen story as the world around them, so it becomes easy for them to accept the screen reality and move it to everyday life. That’s why the movie, despite the fact that even the very process of its creation is much more conventional than, for example, the theater performance, seems to be much more “real” to the audience than any story shown on the stage. Therefore, despite the fact that one of the most dangerous elements on which Indian censorship seems to be extremely sensitive is eroticism, this is also the most desired part of cinema. Moreover, filmmakers, who are tightly constrained, need at the same time to provide pleasure to the audience to get the invested money back, so they invented various tricks by which they manage to bypass censorship.

  • Addressing the Queen: Costumes and Elizabeth I in Film
ADDRESSING THE QUEEN: COSTUMES AND ELIZABETH I IN FILM by LISA WARD BOLDING Under the Direction of Frances Teague ABSTRACT This work focuses on how costumes convey meaning about Queen Elizabeth I in her biopics. First, I will examine the queen’s costume in the final scene of Shekhar Kapur’s 1998 film Elizabeth as a response to the heritage film debate. By conflating two famous portrait gowns, Kapur plays upon the audience’s visual expectations of historical film, thereby separating his film from those that had been criticized as “heritage films.” After using Elizabeth to complicate questions of genre, I will turn to Henry Koster’s 1955 film The Virgin Queen in order to examine how Elizabeth’s costumes depict her as a frustrated, passive figure juxtaposed against Sir Walter Raleigh, who actively fashions his identity by choosing his own clothing. INDEX WORDS: Queen Elizabeth I, Cate Blanchett, Bette Davis, Shekhar Kapur, Henry Koster, costumes, historical film, heritage film, national identity, British national identity, royal portraits, iconography ADDRESSING THE QUEEN: COSTUMES AND ELIZABETH I IN FILM by LISA WARD BOLDING B.A., Wofford College, 2001 A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The University of Georgia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS ATHENS, GEORGIA 2005 © 2005 Lisa Ward Bolding All Rights Reserved ADDRESSING THE QUEEN: COSTUMES AND ELIZABETH I IN FILM by LISA WARD BOLDING Major Professor: Frances Teague Committee: Christy Desmet Hugh Ruppersburg Electronic Version Approved: Maureen Grasso Dean of the Graduate School The University of Georgia December 2005 DEDICATION To Mom and Nana, for all your generous gifts; my love of stories comes from you.

Early Enterprises... Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago Illinois, to his father Elias Disney, and mother Flora Call Disney. Walt had very early interests in art, he would often sell drawings to neighbors to make extra money. He pursued his art career, by studying art and photography by going to McKinley High School in Chicago. Walt began to love, and appreciate nature and wildlife, and family and community, which were a large part of agrarian living. Though his father could be quite stern, and often there was little money, Walt was encouraged by his mother, and older brother, Roy to pursue his talents. Walt joined the Red Cross and was sent overseas to France, where he spent a year driving an ambulance and chauffeuring Red Cross officials. Once he returned from France, he wanted to pursue a career in commercial art, which soon lead to his experiments in animation. He began producing short animated films for local businesses, in Kansas City. By the time Walt had started to create The Alice Comedies, which was about a real girl and her adventures in an animated world, Walt ran out of money, and his company Laugh-O-Grams went bankrupted. Instead of giving up, Walt packed his suitcase and with his unfinished print of The Alice Comedies in hand, headed for Hollywood to start a new business. The early flop of The Alice Comedies inoculated Walt against fear of failure; he had risked it all three or four times in his life. Walt's brother, Roy O. Disney and Walt borrowed an additional $500, and set up shop in their uncle's garage.
