Building on its unrivaled research and technology capabilities, as well as years of global experience, Novelis China is deepening its presence in China with the start of operations at its Changzhou Plant last October. The plant supplies solutions for leading local and regional auto OEMs, as well as supports automakers in high-volume aluminum production for automotive lightweighting. Novelis also recently unveiled its latest cutting-edge aluminum products to the automotive industry, the Novelis AdvanzTM 7000-series, allowing automakers to continue reducing vehicle weight while maintaining superior strength for optimal safety performance. Industry Leader in Automotive Aluminum Novelis supports high-volume aluminum production for automotive lightweighting, including solutions for forming and high-speed joining, tailored solutions for material maximization, alloys for strength and crash energy, closed-loop recycling and adhesive bonding technology innovation. Recently, Novelis participated in the international symposium focused on automotive lightweighting, supply chain management and procurement management – the “Asia Automotive Lightweight Procurement Symposium,” organized by AluMag from July 6-8, 2015 in Shanghai. The event was attended by delegates from international OEMs, tiers and equipment manufacturers from all over the world. Novelis’ premium automotive products showcased at the exhibit included an aluminum body for the Jaguar Land Rover, the SGM Cadillac XTS hood, Audi A6L door, Audi Q3 tailgate and Daimler E-class fender. Changzhou Plant Enables High-Volume Aluminum Production for Our Customers Local production ensures faster response time, shorter lead time and reduced costs and supply chain risks To provide local automotive manufacturers with a single source for inner, structural and outer parts, Novelis established its Changzhou plant in October 2014, which is China’s first dedicated aluminum heat treatment facility for automotive sheet. The plant enables high-volume aluminum production of lightweight vehicles in China, with 120kt capacity per annum, supporting automakers in meeting China’s stricter fuel eciency and emissions regulations. With a well-developed management process, as well as proven technologies and years of experience working with global OEMs, the Novelis Changzhou plant now delivers production advantages for leading local and regional customers, including Jaguar Land Rover and its joint venture in China, with a faster response time, shorter lead time and reduced costs and risks associated with supply chain issues. The plant is expected to supply products for more customers who have made successful audits to the plant in the short run, including Ford, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, making high-volume aluminum production for lightweight vehicles in China possible. Most advanced alloys, like Advanz E170 (outer/skin panel applications) and Advanz S600 (high strength needed structural applications), can be produced at the Novelis Changzhou plant, with identical performance and quality as those produced at Novelis’ other regional plants. Also, the Changzhou plant can produce 5xxx alloys for main inner and structural parts, and the 6xxx alloys for outer and structural parts, which oers a one-stop solution for local automakers to meet stricter fuel eciency and emission regulations required by the Chinese government, in line with the country’s transition to a green economy. Developing Next-Generation High-Strength Alloys, Advanz 7000TM series Novelis Advanz 7000-series products are two to three times stronger than any frequently used automotive aluminum today For decades, Novelis has been a pioneer in aluminum alloy B Pillar manufactured with Novelis AdvanzTM 7000 development, setting the standard in the automotive industry. The company recently announced the development of the Novelis AdvanzTM 7000-series of high-strength alloys designed for safety-critical components of vehicle structures. Novelis Advanz 7000-series products are two to three times stronger than any frequently used automotive aluminum today, which can be used to manufacture components such as bumper systems, crash ring components and door intrusion beams. The new alloy series can significantly reduce weight when compared to current high-strength steels in the marketplace, enabling automakers to further reduce the weight of vehicles while ensuring passenger safety. January now seems like a month of a bygone era — such has been the enormity of change. Given the fog of uncertainty all around, it is hard to be prescient in these times. Global Economy It has been several months since the pandemic engulfed the world and yet there is a lot of uncertainty with respect to the extent of the economic contraction due to this crisis, and the subsequent pace of recovery. This year will see an economic contraction, but this 2020 recession is turning out very different from the past recessions. It has been too sudden – almost off the cliff; its spread has been all-encompassing – affecting almost every economy and sector, and the plunge in economic activity levels and employment has been unprecedented.
