Dear Friend,

I am writing this letter whilst sitting in the departure lounge at Larnaca airport in Cyprus waiting for our 45 minute!!! flight back to . Carol and 1 have been here mainly to check out hotels for a few incentives I will be operating this year. One really doesn't have to travel far to dis cover a new place with excellent hotels, good food and just that "change" that we all need every so often.

Prices for packages are also pretty cheap - $350 for a 3 night stay with bed and breakfast (may change in the season). I even discovered a genuine Lawn Bowls Green in Aya Napa!!! and for the Golfers - head for Phaphos.

This year looks like we will see most prices remaining stable for all Euro pean and American flights or packages. I really don't have to tempt you with cheap prices. I suppose that you just have to make the decision as to where and when.

Last month the call of Africa lured us back to Kenya and then on to Tanza nia, a previous "Off Limits" destination. We had a wonderful 8 days discov ering the Magic of the Serengetti, Tanagire and probably one of the real wonders of the world, the Ngorogoro Crater, truly an exciting and memora ble experience. I can only wonder sometimes why more of my clients don't take advantage of the new vistas that have opened up these past years.

I wish to bring to your notice that Ian Waldbaum is no longer associated with Diesenhaus. 1 wish him luck in his new set up.

Arthur Judes and the rest of my excellent staff will as usual be very happy to help with any of your travel questions.

Hope the summer is not too !!!

^Best regards. \

A S P E C I A L B R E E D Who were those young men and women who bade farewell to their families and friends in the cities and small towns in Southern Africa, and left for a Palestine that was underdeveloped, threatened by hostile forces and under unsympathetic foreign rule? Ideologically motivated, these talented and exceptional youngsters carrying little more than a single suitcase came and participated in the most enriching adventure of the 20th Century—the rebirth of a nation. In this, the first of a series, Becky Rowe and David Kaplan interviewed four of those early pioneers.

Muki who was fifteen when he first heard Jabotinsky in the Town Hall in Johannes burg in 1930, reflects, "The next morning, my mother asked me what he had said and it look me over an hour to explain. Israel Dunsky attended the same meeting. Al though, we hoped he would join the move ment, he didn't—but he ended up a good Zionist anyway!" Listening to Jabotinsky intensified Muki's Zionism, "He was my great teacher. It was one thing to be a Zi onist—he made us feel we had to do something about it. This was a leader tell ing us not to be spectators. We had to be actively part of the solution." Muki arrived in Palestine in early 1936. Extract from Living Inspiredby Rabbi Akiva Tatz

Shabbos is central to Torah and Jewish living. It must reflect the fundamental pattern we are 1^ studying. The week begins and ends with Shabbos - an inspired beginning, a week of work and in r " \m " " a t \ \ spired end to the week. From the holy to the ordinary to the holy again. itral! 1 What is the message of this weekly cycle? What energies are being manifest in it that we should be underlying idea is that Torah is the ultimate end- using, riding? Why do we need a Shabbos every point; the entire world was created only so that Torah week whereas other mo 'adim (festivals) occur only could be manifest. Torah is learned for its own yearly? A process must have an end-point to give it "on track", directed towards fulfilling the aims of the company. Our lives deserve at least that degree meaning. If work never achieves a result, the work is foolish. If an inventor builds a machine which of good management. □ maintains itself fully - fuels itself, oils itself, cleans Rabbi Akiva Tatz. formerly of Johannesburg, itself - that is clever: provided that the machine lives in Telstone and conducts weekly "shiurim" produces something useful. A machine whose only at the Lichu Neranona Shul in Ra'anana. input is its own maintenance would be ridiculous. The result justifies the work, the end-point justifies the process. The pleasure of the freedom and THE SHABBAT realisation which accompanies an end-point are the direct results of the satisfaction of knowing the job CANDLES has been done. OOPS! There was a typographical error in the feature article on the Jewish population in South Africa in our February 1995 issue. Allie Dubb suggests that even if there were to be a heavy exodus from South Africa, the number of Jews remaining in South Africa by the year 2001 should read 70,000 instead of 7,000.
