    Saint of the Day December December 1: St. Edmund Campion, Martyr St. Edmund Campion was born in 1540 in Protestant London. An exceptionally bright child, he was given a good education. He went to Oxford in 1557, during the last year of Catholic Queen Mary’s reign. In 1566, he was given the honor of leading a debate in front of Queen Elizabeth I, who was impressed by him. He became a deacon in Church of England, but soon regretted it. He left England to enter a Catholic seminary in France and became a Jesuit in 1573. He knew then that he desired to return to England and secretly minister to Catholics there, despite the dangers. In 1580, St. Edmund went back to England disguised as a jewel merchant. He secretly preached and said Masses for one year before he was arrested, imprisoned and martyred in 1581. St. Edmund is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. December 2: St. Bibiana, Virgin and Martyr St. Bibiana was an early Christian martyr, probably living during the late 4th century in Rome. Christianity had been made legal by Constantine, but persecutions continued. Bibiana’s parents were martyred, leaving Bibiana and her sister Demetria alone in poverty. They fasted and prayed, refusing to give up their faith. Demetria died of hunger and Bibiana, after undergoing harsh questioning, died a few days later. Their home was turned into a church, and is now the site of the Basilica of Santa Bibiana. December 3: St. Francis Xavier St. Francis Xavier was born in Spain in 1506.

    April 19th, 2020 @ 2nd Sunday of Easter Today’s Readings: 903 Transition in the Parish Office After a long planned retirement from her role as parish Business Manager, Jeanne Im was finally able this past week to pass the baton. Under Jeanne’s stewardship we have received outstanding reports from our au- dits, and she implemented best practices in accounting and management. Jeanne has guided the parish through several chapters of growth and change. These include the very successful Built On Rock and then the One Faith, One Family campaigns, the installation of a new roof over the parish center, the paying off of the church debt, the raising funds for the new church floor, and the soon-to-be- installed new church pews. While adjusting to constant updates and revisions to payroll, taxes, business law, and human resource regulations, she also made sure that all Virtus requirements were being met by all staff and volunteers. On top of that Jeanne teaches religious education, serves at Mass, and volunteers at the Leavenworth County Humane Society. We are grateful to Jeanne and recognize the many sacrifices which no doubt affected her family members, husband Peter, and boys Michael and Andrew. When we are permitted to come together once again for Mass we have a special gift to give Jeanne to show our gratitude. Fortunately for us, Jeanne promises to continue to be an active volunteer in our parish life. Assuming the role of Business Manager is a veteran of parish accounting, Nancy Elmer. Nancy is a Leavenworth native and worked during high school at A&W with a youthful, good-looking and ambitious classmate, Bill McEvoy.

    Saints to Remember – April St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507) Hermit. Patron Saint of boatmen, mariners, naval officers, sailors, travelers, watermen, against fire, against plague, against sterility. Feast Day: April 2 St. Francis of Paola was just 13 when he entered the Franciscan order after a pilgrimage to Assisi. At 15, he became a hermit and embraced austere penances as part of his solitary, contemplative life. Before long, other like-minded young men joined him, and in 1436, he founded the order of Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis of Paola believed that heroic mortification was necessary for spiritual growth and added the observance of a perpetual Lenten fast to the traditional monastic vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Known for his holiness and humility, St. Francis was often called upon to arbitrate disputes, and eventually he was sent by Pope Sixtus IV to serve King Louis XI of France. Called from contemplation to active ministry, this humble hermit suddenly found himself settling international disputes and ministering to kings! “Be peace-loving,” he counseled. “Peace is a precious treasure to be sought with great zeal.” He remained in the French court until his death, and founded many monasteries in France. May the humility and flexibility of this steward saint inspire us to use our gifts in new ways and new places as God directs us. St Isidore (556-636), Bishop and Doctor.     About Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen (1578 - 1622) Saint Fidelis of Saint Fidelis was born in Sigmaringen in Germany. His baptismal name was Mark. He joined the Capuchin Friars at the age of 35, and took the name Fidelis, which means “faithful”. As a Capuchin friar he led a life of Sigmaringen much penance and prayer. He was known for his charity and prayer, and when he became superior of the Capuchin friary, may people were converted to Catholicism as a result of his influence. (Martyr) As a preacher who took a lot of care in preparing his homilies, he was ordered by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith to preach orthodox doctrine in the Grisons (part of Switzerland). He was murdered 24 April by a Calvinist mob for refusing to renounce the Catholic Faith at Seewis on 24 April 1622. What can we learn from Saint Fidelis’life? Saint Fidelis was able to convert people to Catholicism because of his preaching, and because he was faithful and sincere in living out the Catholic faith. One of the challenges for both the clergy and the laity today is to be able to explain the Catholic faith to people in ways that they can understand the message. How wonderful it would be each Catholic could convert someone to the faith by the way they lived their life. If we are serious and faithful about a cause, people know that we truly believe what we are saying. However, if we are just going through the motions, it does not take long for people to see through that – and especially so when it comes to the practise of the Catholic faith.
