FOUNDED IN 1791 • ERECTED IN 1858 • BECAME A MINOR BASILICA IN 1991 Third Sunday of Easter April 18, 2021 A HUNGER THAT IS SATISFIED Reflection on Luke 24:35-48 “Have you anything here to eat?” While the disciples were in utter astonishment upon seeing the Risen Jesus, He inquires about getting something to eat. Ordinary. Mundane. Every day. I think of teenagers coming home from school, checking out the fridge to see if there is anything to eat. They are always hungry. Throughout Scripture, hunger refers not only to the physical reality – our human need for nourishment, but also is used as a metaphor for our deeper human needs – for WEEKLY SCRIPTURE connection, understanding, acceptance, forgiveness, love. In Jesus, the Risen One, we are given the true satisfaction for all our hungers. He is the Bread of Life, sustaining us Sunday, April 18 through His real presence in the Eucharist; He feeds us physically and spiritually with Third Sunday of Easter Bread-that-is Body and Wine-that-is-Blood. Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Ps 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9 If all the Resurrection appearances of Jesus can be summed up in one phrase, it might 1 Jn 2:1-5a be, “Love is stronger than death, and Love is all the food you’ll ever need.” When we Lk 24:35-48 celebrated the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday with John’s account of the Last Supper, we experienced the intrinsic connection between Eucharist and service, Monday, April 19 between being fed with the Bread of Life and washing feet. For always, not only are Easter Weekday each of our deepest hungers fed in Communion, but also we each are sent forth to Acts 6:8-15 become Bread to feed the hungry world. Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30 ~ Fr. Jay Jn 6:22-29 SAINT FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN Tuesday, April 20 Feast Day: April 24 Easter Weekday Acts 7:51—8:1a If a poor man needed some clothing, Fidelis would often give the man the clothes right Ps 31:3cd-4, 6, 7b, 8a, 17, 21ab off his back. Complete generosity to others characterized this saint’s life. Jn 6:30-35 Born in 1577, Mark Rey became a lawyer who constantly upheld the causes of the poor and oppressed people. Nicknamed “the poor man’s lawyer,” Rey soon grew disgusted Wednesday, April 21 with the corruption and injustice he saw among his colleagues. He left his law career to St. Anslem, Bishop and Doctor become a priest, joining his brother George as a member of the Capuchin Order. Fidelis Acts 8:1b-8 was his religious name. His wealth was divided between needy seminarians and the Ps 66:1-3a, 4-5, 6-7a poor. Jn 6:35-40 As a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi, Fidelis continued his devotion to the weak and Thursday, April 22 needy. During a severe epidemic in a city where he was guardian of a friary, Fidelis Easter Weekday cared for and cured many sick soldiers. Acts 8:26-40 He was appointed head of a group of Capuchins sent to preach against the Calvinists Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20 and Zwinglians in Switzerland. Almost certain violence threatened. Those who Jn 6:44-51 observed the mission felt that success was more attributable to the prayer of Fidelis Friday, April 23 during the night than to his sermons and St. George, Martyr; instructions. St. Adalbert, Bishop Acts 9:1-20 He was accused of opposing the peasants’ Ps 117:1bc, 2 national aspirations for independence from Jn 6:52-59 Austria. While he was preaching at Seewis, to which he had gone against the advice of Saturday, April 24 St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Priest escaped unharmed. A Protestant offered to and Martyr shelterhis friends, Fidelis, a gun but hewas declined, fired at saying him, buthis lifehe Acts 9:31-42 was in God’s hands. On the road back, he was Ps 116:12-13, 14-15, 16-17 set upon by a group of armed men and killed. Jn 6:60-69 Fidelis was canonized in 1746. • December Saints
Saint of the Day December December 1: St. Edmund Campion, Martyr St. Edmund Campion was born in 1540 in Protestant London. An exceptionally bright child, he was given a good education. He went to Oxford in 1557, during the last year of Catholic Queen Mary’s reign. In 1566, he was given the honor of leading a debate in front of Queen Elizabeth I, who was impressed by him. He became a deacon in Church of England, but soon regretted it. He left England to enter a Catholic seminary in France and became a Jesuit in 1573. He knew then that he desired to return to England and secretly minister to Catholics there, despite the dangers. In 1580, St. Edmund went back to England disguised as a jewel merchant. He secretly preached and said Masses for one year before he was arrested, imprisoned and martyred in 1581. St. Edmund is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. December 2: St. Bibiana, Virgin and Martyr St. Bibiana was an early Christian martyr, probably living during the late 4th century in Rome. Christianity had been made legal by Constantine, but persecutions continued. Bibiana’s parents were martyred, leaving Bibiana and her sister Demetria alone in poverty. They fasted and prayed, refusing to give up their faith. Demetria died of hunger and Bibiana, after undergoing harsh questioning, died a few days later. Their home was turned into a church, and is now the site of the Basilica of Santa Bibiana. December 3: St. Francis Xavier St. Francis Xavier was born in Spain in 1506.

  • Transition in the Parish Office
April 19th, 2020 @ 2nd Sunday of Easter Today’s Readings: 903 Transition in the Parish Office After a long planned retirement from her role as parish Business Manager, Jeanne Im was finally able this past week to pass the baton. Under Jeanne’s stewardship we have received outstanding reports from our au- dits, and she implemented best practices in accounting and management. Jeanne has guided the parish through several chapters of growth and change. These include the very successful Built On Rock and then the One Faith, One Family campaigns, the installation of a new roof over the parish center, the paying off of the church debt, the raising funds for the new church floor, and the soon-to-be- installed new church pews. While adjusting to constant updates and revisions to payroll, taxes, business law, and human resource regulations, she also made sure that all Virtus requirements were being met by all staff and volunteers. On top of that Jeanne teaches religious education, serves at Mass, and volunteers at the Leavenworth County Humane Society. We are grateful to Jeanne and recognize the many sacrifices which no doubt affected her family members, husband Peter, and boys Michael and Andrew. When we are permitted to come together once again for Mass we have a special gift to give Jeanne to show our gratitude. Fortunately for us, Jeanne promises to continue to be an active volunteer in our parish life. Assuming the role of Business Manager is a veteran of parish accounting, Nancy Elmer. Nancy is a Leavenworth native and worked during high school at A&W with a youthful, good-looking and ambitious classmate, Bill McEvoy.

  • Saints to Remember – April St
Saints to Remember – April St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507) Hermit. Patron Saint of boatmen, mariners, naval officers, sailors, travelers, watermen, against fire, against plague, against sterility. Feast Day: April 2 St. Francis of Paola was just 13 when he entered the Franciscan order after a pilgrimage to Assisi. At 15, he became a hermit and embraced austere penances as part of his solitary, contemplative life. Before long, other like-minded young men joined him, and in 1436, he founded the order of Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis of Paola believed that heroic mortification was necessary for spiritual growth and added the observance of a perpetual Lenten fast to the traditional monastic vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Known for his holiness and humility, St. Francis was often called upon to arbitrate disputes, and eventually he was sent by Pope Sixtus IV to serve King Louis XI of France. Called from contemplation to active ministry, this humble hermit suddenly found himself settling international disputes and ministering to kings! “Be peace-loving,” he counseled. “Peace is a precious treasure to be sought with great zeal.” He remained in the French court until his death, and founded many monasteries in France. May the humility and flexibility of this steward saint inspire us to use our gifts in new ways and new places as God directs us. St Isidore (556-636), Bishop and Doctor. Patron Saint of computer technicians, computer users, computers, the Internet, schoolchildren, students. Feast Day: April 4 Born of a noble Spanish family, St Isadore had two brothers, Leander and Fulgentius, and a sister, Florentina, who also became saints.

He was known for his charity and prayer, and when he became superior of the Capuchin friary, may people were converted to Catholicism as a result of his influence. (Martyr) As a preacher who took a lot of care in preparing his homilies, he was ordered by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith to preach orthodox doctrine in the Grisons (part of Switzerland). He was murdered 24 April by a Calvinist mob for refusing to renounce the Catholic Faith at Seewis on 24 April 1622. What can we learn from Saint Fidelis’life? Saint Fidelis was able to convert people to Catholicism because of his preaching, and because he was faithful and sincere in living out the Catholic faith. One of the challenges for both the clergy and the laity today is to be able to explain the Catholic faith to people in ways that they can understand the message. How wonderful it would be each Catholic could convert someone to the faith by the way they lived their life. If we are serious and faithful about a cause, people know that we truly believe what we are saying. However, if we are just going through the motions, it does not take long for people to see through that – and especially so when it comes to the practise of the Catholic faith.
