Among the habitats, especially the coasts along Japan, the Pacific coast of the U.S.A. and coasts along Australia have many species and large production. In Japan from ancient times abalones have been used as food. Japanese, as well as American, abalones are famous for their large size. Among abalones, H. gigantea (" Madaka-awabi "), H. gigantea sieboldi (" Megai-awabi "), H. gigantea discus (" Kuro-awabi") and H. discus hannai (" Ezo-awabi") are important in commerce. Abalone is prepared as raw fresh meat (" Sashimi") or is cooked after cut ting it from the shell and trimming the visceral mass and then mantle fringe from the large central muscle which is then cut transversely into slices. These small steaks may be served at table as raw fresh meat (" Sashimi") or may be fried, stewed, or minced and made into chowder. A large proportion of the abalones harvested in Japan are prepared as cooked, dried and smoked products for export to China. -

Efficient hydrostatic skeleton; room for networks of blood vessels, the alimentary canal, and associated organs. 10.2 Characteristics A. Phylum Mollusca 1. Contains nearly 75,000 living species and 35,000 fossil species. 2. They have a soft body. 3. They include chitons, tooth shells, snails, slugs, nudibranchs, sea butterflies, clams, mussels, oysters, squids, octopuses and nautiluses (Figure 10.1A-E). 4. Some may weigh 450 kg and some grow to 18 m long, but 80% are under 5 centimeters in size. 5. Shell collecting is a popular pastime. 6. Classes: Gastropoda (snails…), Bivalvia (clams, oysters…), Polyplacophora (chitons), Cephalopoda (squids, nautiluses, octopuses), Monoplacophora, Scaphopoda, Caudofoveata, and Solenogastres. B. Ecological Relationships 1. Molluscs are found from the tropics to the polar seas. 2. Most live in the sea as bottom feeders, burrowers, borers, grazers, carnivores, predators and filter feeders. 1. Fossil evidence indicates molluscs evolved in the sea; most have remained marine. 2. Some bivalves and gastropods moved to brackish and fresh water. 3. Only snails (gastropods) have successfully invaded the land; they are limited to moist, sheltered habitats with calcium in the soil. C. Economic Importance 1. Culturing of pearls and pearl buttons is an important industry. 2. Burrowing shipworms destroy wooden ships and wharves. 3. A key to identification of Pacific species is given. We report a diagnostic feature with taxonomic remarks of these species. 1 STAFF WORKING PAPER SUMMARY OF SELECTED PEARL HARBOR MARINE NATURAL RESOURCES DATA FROM 1999 – 2015 - IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSED PROJECT P 516 Prepared by Stephen H. Smith Marine Ecologist SSC Scientific Diving Services March 18, 2015 Introduction Overview. The objective of this Staff Working Paper is to summarize selected data gathered by the author between 1999 and February 2015. During that time period, the author conducted a variety of assessments throughout Pearl Harbor and the Pearl Harbor Entrance Channel. The specific resources which will be addressed in this partial summary are: 1) corals, 2) selected fin fish species and Essential Fish Habitat (EFH), 3) sea turtles, 4) miscellaneous and 5) perceived data gaps. This summary is not intended to reiterate material already presented in the Pearl Harbor INRMP or the many other documents which contain pertinent marine natural resource data; it is intended to summarize unpublished and/or unreported data gathered by the author. In this document, Pearl Harbor is defined as the area north of Hammer Point, as designated on Nautical Chart No. 19366 (Oahu South Coast Pearl Harbor). The Pearl Harbor Entrance Channel (PHEC) is defined as the area south of Hammer Point between the channel markers on the eastern and western sides of the PHEC and extending to the outermost Channel Marker Buoys (No. 1 on the west side and No. 2 on the east side). Figure 1 illustrates the boundaries of the P 516 project assessment area. All the data summarized in this document was gathered by the author, with periodic biological support from Donald Marx, and others. -

OCCURRENCE OF THE SQUID, LOLLIGUNCULA BREVIS, IN SOME COASTAL WATERS OF WESTERN FLORIDN ALEXANDER DRAGOVICH Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, lVfiami AND JOHN A. Biological Laboratory, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, St. Petersburg Beach, Florida ABSTRACT Lolliguncula brevis (Blainville) is the dominant cephalopod in the Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor-Pine Island Sound areas of west Florida. Distribution and seasonal occurrence of the species are discussed. The temperature and salinity ranges at which squid occurred were 12.6 to 31.6°C and 18.19 to 36.15%c. The majority of the squid collected were immature. This note presents information on the occurrence and distribution of squid in bays of the central west coast of Florida and adjacent neritic waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Published material pertaining to the systemat- ics and geographical distribution of cephalopods in the Gulf of Mexico is limited to the work of Voss (1950, 1954, 1955, 1956a, 1956b). Little is known about the distribution of squid in Florida estuaries and adjoining marine waters (Tabb & Manning, 1961; Dragovich & Kelly, 1963). In Florida, squid is used extensively as bait by commercial and sport fisher- men (Dragovich & Kelly, 1963), and small amounts are consumed by humans. Samples were collected from September, 1962, through December, 1962, with a ten-foot, shrimp try-net, and from January, 1963, through Decem- ber, 1964, with a 16-foot, semi-balloon trawl. Both nets had one-inch, stretch mesh. Most of the stations in Tampa Bay and the adjacent oceanic waters were sampled semimonthly during 1962, monthly during 1963, and in alternate months during 1964. -
