    Marine Biodiversity (2020) 50:98 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12526-020-01113-4 REVIEW A review of Southern Ocean squids using nets and beaks Yves Cherel1 Received: 31 May 2020 /Revised: 31 August 2020 /Accepted: 3 September 2020 # Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung 2020 Abstract This review presents an innovative approach to investigate the teuthofauna from the Southern Ocean by combining two com- plementary data sets, the literature on cephalopod taxonomy and biogeography, together with predator dietary investigations. Sixty squids were recorded south of the Subtropical Front, including one circumpolar Antarctic (Psychroteuthis glacialis Thiele, 1920), 13 circumpolar Southern Ocean, 20 circumpolar subantarctic, eight regional subantarctic, and 12 occasional subantarctic species. A critical evaluation removed five species from the list, and one species has an unknown taxonomic status. The 42 Southern Ocean squids belong to three large taxonomic units, bathyteuthoids (n = 1 species), myopsids (n =1),andoegopsids (n = 40). A high level of endemism (21 species, 50%, all oegopsids) characterizes the Southern Ocean teuthofauna. Seventeen families of oegopsids are represented, with three dominating families, onychoteuthids (seven species, five endemics), ommastrephids (six species, three endemics), and cranchiids (five species, three endemics). Recent improvements in beak identification and taxonomy allowed making new correspondence between beak and species names, such as Galiteuthis suhmi (Hoyle 1886), Liguriella podophtalma Issel, 1908, and the recently described Taonius notalia Evans, in prep. Gonatus phoebetriae beaks were synonymized with those of Gonatopsis octopedatus Sasaki, 1920, thus increasing significantly the number of records and detailing the circumpolar distribution of this rarely caught Southern Ocean squid. Their study demonstrated that the size distribu- tion of post-ovulatory follicles (POF) is mostly unimodal, suggesting that they only lay 1 batch of eggs. These data, together with a reevaluation of the literature, revealed that deep-sea and polar benthic octopods are generally not multiple spawners. Females spawn a single egg mass simulta- neously or as a series of several consequent mini-batches separated by short periods of time, mak- ing it difficult to distinguish them by either size or condition of their POF. Analysis of the length−frequency distribution of POF is a useful tool to reconstruct the spawning history of brood- ing females of cold-water octopods. Octopus in the family Octopodidae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) has been generally recognized as a “catch-all” genus. The monophyly of octopus species in China’s coastal waters has not yet been studied. In this paper, we inferred the phylogeny of 11 octopus species (family Octopodidae) in China’s coastal waters using nucleotide sequences of two mitochondrial DNA genes: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA. Sequence analysis of both genes revealed that the 11 species of Octopodidae fell into four distinct groups, which were genetically distant from one another and exhibited identical phylogenetic resolution. The phylogenies indicated strongly that the genus Octopus in China’s coastal waters is also not monophyletic, and it is therefore clear that the Octopodidae systematics in this area requires major revision. It is demonstrated that partial sequence information of both the mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and COI could be used as diagnostic molecular markers in the identification and resolution of the taxonomic ambiguity of Octopodidae species. In the Lakshadweep islands, men, women and children have been involved in spear fishing for octopus for a long time, but there is a paucity of information on the biology and fishery of the octopus species in Indian waters. In this study, we estimated the population abundance, morphometry and sex ratio of Octopus cyanea. Moreover, we examined whether the current octopus spear fishing activity displayed size or sex selectivity, given that larger individuals are easier to spot and brooding females spend more time in crevices. O. cyanea surveys were conducted by snorkeling in the lagoons of Kavaratti and Agatti islands between November 2008 and April 2012. The estimated mean density of O. cyanea was 3 and 2.5 individuals per hectare in Agatti and Kavaratti, respectively.

    Review Octopus Consciousness: The Role of Perceptual Richness Jennifer Mather Department of Psychology, University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, AB T1K 3M4, Canada; [email protected] Abstract: It is always difficult to even advance possible dimensions of consciousness, but Birch et al., 2020 have suggested four possible dimensions and this review discusses the first, perceptual richness, with relation to octopuses. They advance acuity, bandwidth, and categorization power as possible components. It is first necessary to realize that sensory richness does not automatically lead to perceptual richness and this capacity may not be accessed by consciousness. Octopuses do not discriminate light wavelength frequency (color) but rather its plane of polarization, a dimension that we do not understand. Their eyes are laterally placed on the head, leading to monocular vision and head movements that give a sequential rather than simultaneous view of items, possibly consciously planned. Details of control of the rich sensorimotor system of the arms, with 3/5 of the neurons of the nervous system, may normally not be accessed to the brain and thus to consciousness. The chromatophore-based skin appearance system is likely open loop, and not available to the octopus’ vision. Conversely, in a laboratory situation that is not ecologically valid for the octopus, learning about shapes and extents of visual figures was extensive and flexible, likely consciously planned. Similarly, octopuses’ local place in and navigation around space can be guided by light polarization plane and visual landmark location and is learned and monitored. The complex array of chemical cues delivered by water and on surfaces does not fit neatly into the components above and has barely been tested but might easily be described as perceptually rich.

Biological Laboratory, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, St. Petersburg Beach, Florida ABSTRACT Lolliguncula brevis (Blainville) is the dominant cephalopod in the Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor-Pine Island Sound areas of west Florida. Distribution and seasonal occurrence of the species are discussed. The temperature and salinity ranges at which squid occurred were 12.6 to 31.6°C and 18.19 to 36.15%c. The majority of the squid collected were immature. This note presents information on the occurrence and distribution of squid in bays of the central west coast of Florida and adjacent neritic waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Published material pertaining to the systemat- ics and geographical distribution of cephalopods in the Gulf of Mexico is limited to the work of Voss (1950, 1954, 1955, 1956a, 1956b). Little is known about the distribution of squid in Florida estuaries and adjoining marine waters (Tabb & Manning, 1961; Dragovich & Kelly, 1963). In Florida, squid is used extensively as bait by commercial and sport fisher- men (Dragovich & Kelly, 1963), and small amounts are consumed by humans. Samples were collected from September, 1962, through December, 1962, with a ten-foot, shrimp try-net, and from January, 1963, through Decem- ber, 1964, with a 16-foot, semi-balloon trawl. Both nets had one-inch, stretch mesh. Most of the stations in Tampa Bay and the adjacent oceanic waters were sampled semimonthly during 1962, monthly during 1963, and in alternate months during 1964.
