ABSTRACT Conversion by the Book: Buddhist Print Culture in Early Republican China 經典佛化: 民國初期佛教出版文化 Gregory Adam Scott 史瑞戈 In this dissertation I argue that print culture acted as a catalyst for change among Buddhists in modern China. Through examining major publication institutions, publishing projects, and their managers and contributors from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, I show that the expansion of the scope and variety of printed works, as well as new the social structures surrounding publishing, substantially impacted the activity of Chinese Buddhists. In doing so I hope to contribute to ongoing discussions of the ‘revival’ of Chinese Buddhism in the modern period, and demonstrate that publishing, propelled by new print technologies and new forms of social organization, was a key field of interaction and communication for religious actors during this era, one that helped make possible the introduction and adoption of new forms of religious thought and practice. 本論文的論點是出版文化在近代中國佛教人物之中,扮演了變化觸媒的角色. 通過研究從十 九世紀末到二十世紀二十年代的主要的出版機構, 種類, 及其主辦人物與提供貢獻者, 論文 說明佛教印刷的多元化 以及範圍的大量擴展, 再加上跟出版有關的社會結構, 對中國佛教 人物的活動都發生了顯著的影響. 此研究顯示在被新印刷技術與新形式的社會結構的推進 下的出版事業, 為該時代的宗教人物展開一種新的相互連結與構通的場域, 因而使新的宗教 思想與實踐的引入成為可能. 此論文試圖對現行關於近代中國佛教的所謂'復興'的討論提出 貢獻. Tanxu’s actions during this time have been seen, broadly, in three different ways. First, as examples of Chinese nationalism, or "cultural patriotism," and thus resistance to Japanese encroachment; second, as accommodation of, if not collaboration with, the Japanese; and third—what Tanxu himself proclaimed—as apolitical actions intended to promote Buddhism. I attempt to reconcile these views in order to understand how Tanxu’s Buddhist activism can contribute to our understanding of the complex and controversial categories of resistance and collaboration. Introduction Tanxu 倓虛, also known as Wang Futing, was a Buddhist monk, trained in the Tiantai tradition, who was active in the first half of the twentieth century.

    Dear Dharma Protectors and Friends, Auspicious blessings to you all! Time has passed quickly; as another year draws to a close, I would like to send my prayers to all our benefactors for a peaceful new spring. As the river of time flows, this world continues to be filled with both joy and sorrow. Just like the previous years, I have not stopped traveling in 2009, in order to follow Buddha’s example in covering the world with his footsteps and teachings. The only difference is that having dedicated most of my time to Buddhism, not much had been spared to care for my physical health. Despite the continued degradation of my vision, my mind tells me that I cannot disappoint the devotees for their dedication and support. Therefore my footsteps have only sped up for Dharma propagation. Somehow, this has enabled me to find a brighter and clearer mind, which can be considered a type of unexpected benefit. An overview of 2009 reveals both exciting developments in history, as well as heart-breaking tragedies. On August 8th, Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan and caused the most devastating damages in fifty years. In only three days’ time, dozens of towns and villages in Southern Taiwan were washed out by the flood that dislocated thousands of families and took countless lives. “Heaven and earth are so ruthless that human lives are regarded as livestock.” How can the world bear to see this? Being abroad when I received the news, I knew that disaster relief cannot wait, and called Fo Guang Shan immediately to establish the Fo Guang Shan Emergency Relief Center.

    NEWSLETTER EAST ASIAN DEPARTMENT STUDIES & PROGRAM 2009/ 2010 DIRECTOR’S LETTER Dear Friends and Colleagues, Unfortunately, we begin this new academic year with some austerity plans in place. As many of you know, last winter an economic crisis--totally of man-made proportions--hit the University and forced us all to realize that “bad times” were in store for our continuing programs and future academic plans. We are hopeful that “good times” are in the offing longer-term, but the rhetoric of “happy days will be here again” is still hard to take seriously. That said, however, we are fortunate that the last several months have seen an improvement in the University’s investments, and thus the dire March prognostications for the next ten years at Princeton have turned out to be overblown. Overblown, perhaps, but no one is ready to breathe easily. The same economic planning mavens who got us into spending beyond our means are also in charge of inventing a “new normal” by which Nassau Hall now calls the shots centrally and tells us what we can spend and what we can’t. When David Howell, Chair of the EAS Department, and I met with President Tilghman last spring, we were reassured when she told us that in the end the future of the East Asian Studies Department and Program at Princeton should be in the hands of our faculty and not our administrators. We hope that day will return soon enough. We shouldn’t dwell on the dark side of all this. The bright side is that the EAS Department and Program have together contributed mightily in helping the University overcome its large financial shortfall after the “crash” last year.
