of modern educational institutions in Chinese Buddhism. My aim is twofold: 1) to produce a history of modern monastic education in China; and 2) to investigate the intended outcomes of this new system of education as shown in the student-monks it produced. Focusing on identity formation, I examine the production of a collective identity – the student-monk – within and outside of the Buddhist academies (foxueyuan). Student-monks were those who identified with the imagined community formed around modern Buddhist academies and, more importantly, Buddhist periodicals that were widely circulated during the Republican period. I argue that this collective identity was indispensable to the young monks’ creation of a distinctly Buddhist citizenship, which allowed them to engage and negotiate with the nation-state in a series of encounters. In other words, student-monks were both the products of a reformulated Buddhism-state relation and agents for that very transformation in twentieth-century China. I maintain that the emergence of student- monks as both an actual and imagined community is crucial to our understanding of the development of modern Chinese Buddhism. Résumé Cette thèse est une étude de l'émergence et de l'impact des institutions d'éducation moderne sur le Bouddhisme chinois. L'objectif de mon projet est en deux temps: 1) produire une histoire de l'éducation monastique moderne en Chine; et 2) étudier les résultats escomptés de ce nouveau système d'éducation tels que visibles chez les étudiants moines sortants. En me concentrant sur l'identité en formation, j'examine la production d'une identité collective, soit l'étudiant moine, au sein et hors des académies bouddhistes (foxueyuan). Les étudiants moines étaient ceux qui s'identifiaient avec la communauté imaginée qui se formait autour des académies bouddhistes modernes, et surtout, les périodiques bouddhistes qui étaient largement distribués lors de la période républicaine. Je soutiens que cette identité collective était cruciale à la création d'une citoyenneté distinctivement bouddhiste chez les jeunes moines, ce qui leur a permis de s'engager et de négocier avec l'État-nation lors d'une série de rencontres. En d'autres termes, les étudiants moines étaient à la fois les produits d'une relation Bouddhisme-État reformulée ainsi que les agents de cette même transformation dans la Chine du vingtième siècle.     Journal of chinese humanities 5 (2019) 124-148 brill.com/joch Imagining a Universal Empire: a Study of the Illustrations of the Tributary States of the Myriad Regions Attributed to Li Gonglin Ge Zhaoguang 葛兆光 Professor of History, Fudan University, China [email protected] Abstract This article is not concerned with the history of aesthetics but, rather, is an exercise in intellectual history. “Illustrations of Tributary States” [Zhigong tu 職貢圖] as a type of art reveals a Chinese tradition of artistic representations of foreign emissaries paying tribute at the imperial court. This tradition is usually seen as going back to the “Illustrations of Tributary States,” painted by Emperor Yuan in the Liang dynasty 梁元帝 [r. 552-554] in the first half of the sixth century. This series of paintings not only had a lasting influence on aesthetic history but also gave rise to a highly distinctive intellectual tradition in the development of Chinese thought: images of foreign emis- saries were used to convey the Celestial Empire’s sense of pride and self-confidence, with representations of strange customs from foreign countries serving as a foil for the image of China as a radiant universal empire at the center of the world. The tra- dition of “Illustrations of Tributary States” was still very much alive during the time of the Song dynasty [960-1279], when China had to compete with equally powerful neighboring states, the empire’s territory had been significantly diminished, and the Chinese population had become ethnically more homogeneous.     UDAYA, Journal of 13, 2015 UDAYA, Khmer Studies, The World’s Oldest Plan of Angkor Vat THE WORLD’S OLDEST PLAN OF ANGKOR VAT: THE JAPANESE SO-CALLED JETAVANA, AN ILLUSTRATED PLAN OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY Yoshiaki Ishizawa Director, Sophia Asia Center for Research and Human Development Cambodia and Japan in the 16th and 17th Century The Angkor Empire, which built grand monuments including those now registered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor, came under attack by the army of the neighboring Siamese Ayutthaya dynasty (today’s Thailand), around 1431. This led to the fall of the ancient capital of Angkor, thereby ending the Empire’s history of 600 years. The kingdom’s capital was then transferred to Srei Santhor, Phnom Penh, and Longvek in 1529, and then to Oudong in 1618. Phnom Penh has been the capital city from 1867 to this day. Recent research has uncovered the fact that descendants of the Angkor rulers returned to Angkor Thom between 1546 and 1576, where they repaired the derelict structures and encouraged locals to move back to the area.1 Western missionaries, visiting Cambodia around this time, also left documents with details concerning the ancient capital. Angkor Vat on the other hand was turned into a Buddhist temple (Theravada Buddhism) after the collapse of the Khmer Empire, and continues to attract nearby residents as a place of Buddhist worship. In Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi accomplished the unification of the nation (1590). Following the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Shogunal government in 1603, and around this time Japan received a large number of international visitors including Christian missionaries and international traders.

Tradition and Transformation: Cataloguing Chinese Art in the Middle and Late Imperial Eras Abstract After obtaining sovereignty, a new emperor of China often gathers the imperial collections of previous dynasties and uses them as evidence of the legitimacy of the new regime. Some emperors go further, commissioning the compilation projects of bibliographies of books and catalogues of artistic works in their imperial collections not only as inventories but also for proclaiming their imperial power. The imperial collections of art symbolize political and cultural predominance, present contemporary attitudes toward art and connoisseurship, and reflect emperors’ personal taste for art. The attempt of this research project is to explore the practice of art cataloguing during two of the most important reign periods in imperial China: Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (r. 1101-1125) and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (r. 1736-1795). Through examining the format and content of the selected painting, calligraphy, and bronze catalogues compiled by both emperors, features of each catalogue reveal the development of cataloguing imperial artistic collections.

    Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare.

Both religious leaders not only survived persecution, but brought their faiths to greater heights. This paper studies how these masters adapted Chan Buddhist teachings to the woes and conditions of their times. In particular, I shall review how yixuan and Hsing yun adapted the teachings of their predecessors, added value to the socio-political milieu of their times, and used familiar language to reconcile reality and their beliefs. Background These two Chan masters were selected because of the significance of their contributions. Lirlji Yixuan was not only the founder ofa popular Lirlji2) school in Chan Buddhism but was also posthumously awarded the title of Meditation Master of and Wisdom Illumination(HuizhaoChanshi ue,H", maeM)(Sasaki Kirchner 2oog, s2) by Emperor Yizong em7 of the Tang dynasty (r. 859-873). Hsing Yun, a very strong proponent ofHumanistic Buddhism, is currently the recipient of ls honorary doctorate degrees from universities around the world (Shi and Weng 2015). To have received such accolades, both Chan masters ought to have made momentous contribution to their societies. Although Yixuan and Hsing Yun had humble beginnings, they were well-grounded in Buddhist teachings.

    MANOJ KUMAR SAXENA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA LUCKNOW CIRCLE The Site The site is located (N27⁰ 31’. 150”; E82⁰ 02’. 504”) on the alluvium flood plains of River Achiravati (Rapti), about 195 km east of Lucknow and 15km district headquarter Sravasti (at Bhinga) of Uttar Pradesh. Historical Background of the Site Sravasti was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Kosala. The earliest references of the city are available in Ramayana and Mahabharata as a prosperous city in the kingdom of Kosala. It is said to have derived its name from a legendary king Sarvasta of solar race who is stated to have founded the city. Therefore, it became ‘Savatthi’ or Sravasti. In the 6th century BC, during the reign of Presenajit, the place rose to fame due to its association with Buddha and Mahavira and became one of the eight holy places of Buddhist pilgrimage. During the days of Buddha its prosperity reached the peak under the powerful ruler of Prasenaji. In the Mahaparinibnana-Sutta Sravasti is mentioned as one of the six important cities where Buddha had a large followers. Buddha is said to have spent 24 or 25 rainy seasons (varshavas) here after his disciple Sudatta Anathapindika built a monastery for him at Jetavana. Historical Background of Excavations The ruins of Sravasti remained forgotten until they were brought to light and identified by Sir Alexander Cunningham in 1863. Subsequently, the site was excavated by several scholars, Marshal (1909-14), K.K. Sinha (1959), Lal Chand Singh (1991-98), Kansai University, Japan and Later by the Excavation Branch Patna in the first decade of this century.

Abstract Shanhaijing (Classic of Mountains and Seas ) records many ancient groups of people in Neolithic China. The five biggest were: Yan Di, Huang Di, Zhuan Xu, Di Jun and Shao Hao. These were not only the names of groups, but also the names of individuals, who were regarded by many groups as common male ancestors. These groups first lived in the Pamirs Plateau, soon gathered in the north of the Tibetan Plateau and west of the Qinghai Lake and learned from each other advanced sciences and technologies, later spread out to other places of China and built their unique ancient cultures during the Neolithic Age. The Yan Di’s offspring spread out to the west of the Taklamakan Desert;The Huang Di’s offspring spread out to the north of the Chishui River, Tianshan Mountains and further northern and northeastern areas;The Di Jun’s and Shao Hao’s offspring spread out to the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, where the Di Jun’s offspring lived in the west of the Shao Hao’s territories, which were near the sea or in the Shandong Peninsula.Modern archaeological discoveries have revealed the authenticity of Shanhaijing ’s records.

    6 Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Negotiator: What Chinese Characters Have to Offer Negotiation Pedagogy Andrew Wei-Min Lee* Editors’ Note: In a project that from its inception has been devoted to second generation updates, it is instructive nonetheless to realize how much we have to learn from the past. We believe Lee’s chapter on Chinese characters and their implications for negotiation is groundbreaking. With luck, it will prove to be a harbinger of a whole variety of new ways of looking at our field that will emerge from our next round of discussion. Introduction To the non-Chinese speaker, Chinese characters can look like a cha- otic mess of dots, lines and circles. It is said that Chinese is the most difficult language in the world to learn, and since there is no alpha- bet, the struggling student has no choice but to learn every single Chinese character by sheer force of memory – and there are tens of thousands! I suggest a different perspective. While Chinese is perhaps not the easiest language to learn, there is a very definite logic and sys- tem to the formation of Chinese characters. Some of these characters date back almost eight thousand years – and embedded in their make-up is an extraordinary amount of cultural history and wisdom. * Andrew Wei-Min Lee is founder and president of the Leading Negotiation Institute, whose mission is to promote negotiation pedagogy in China.     Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata by Asanga and Maitreya with a Commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche Geshe Lharampa Translated by Jules Levinsion Asanga in the fourth century meditated on Maitreya for twelve years and then was able to meet the Maitreya Buddha (the next Buddha) directly, who gave him five works including this text. Asanga then went on to found the Mind-only or Chittamatra school of Buddhism. This text, which contains both the root verses of Maitreya and a commentary on these verses by Thrangu Rinpoche, begins by giving the characteristics of dharma which is ordinary phenomena as we perceive it as unenlightened beings. Phenomena is described in detail by giving its characteristics, its constituents or elements, and finally its source which is the mind. Discussed are the eight consciousnesses especially the alaya consciousness and how it creates the appearance of this world. Understanding dharma allows us to understand how we build up a false illusion of this world and this then leads to our problems in samsara. Next, the text discusses dharmata or phenomena as it really is, not as it appears, in detail. In describing this sphere of reality or pure being, the text gives the characteristics of dharmata, where it is located, and the kinds of meditation needed to develop a perception of the true nature of reality. Finally, there is a discussion of how one transforms ordinary dharma into dharmata, i.e. how one reaches awakening or enlightenment. This is discussed in ten famous points and this is actually a guide or a map to how to proceed along the Buddhist path.

Chairman ~ • • t ABSTRACT Selected aspects of Tibetan Buddhist theory and practice were introduced and compared with Western formulations from such systems as Gestalt therapy, psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, and con­ temporary physics. Generally, the Tibetan Buddhist approach asserts that all forms of diminished functioning (samsara) result from the ego principle's interruption of innate, primordial awareness (rig-pa), which is the experiential pole of Sunyata, unconditioned reality. The ego principle has been defined as a cybernetic system which creates samsara through its struggle to sustain the reification of the self­ other context in the face of the truth of impermanence and the ego's actual nonsubstantiality. The Four Veils and the Eight Consciousnesses are models which elucidate the mechanisms of the ego principle. The Four Veils are: ma-rig-pa (the basic ground of ego); the actual ego-other dichotomy; the klesa (egocentric emotionality); and karma (egocentric behavior). The Eight Consciousnesses are: the five senses; a sixth "sense" (yid) which functions to synthesize and organize experience coherently; the seventh consciousness (nyBn-yid) which provides the cognitive framework and emotional energy for dichotomizing experience into self and other; and the eighth consciousness (alaya-vijnana), the ultimate phenomenal ground.
