Women worked in factories during World War I, and Wahe had several jobs after graduating from Rock Island High School, including at Woolworth's, a hamburger restaurant and a Singer sewing machine store. But after marrying her husband Vern, who already had a job at the Arsenal, she hired on, too, in the summer of 1942, in the transportation department to drive shop "mules" on second shift. "They were hiring that summer cause of course the Arsenal was growing and growing and growing," she said in a 2012 interview conducted as an oral history project about the WWII homefront by Augustana College. May is Military Appreciation Month nationwide. The Davenport City Council officially signed the proclamation at its meeting on May 8. Mayor Frank Klipsch and Alderman Mike Matson, 7th Ward, presented the proclamation to Michael Hutchison, Deputy to the Commander, Army Sustainment Command, and Col. Scot Doboszenski, Deputy Chief of Staff, Army Sustainment Command. The proclamation recognizes and celebrates veterans and active military and their families who work at facilities like Rock Island Arsenal, play an important role in the support of these service members, the strength of the United States and its promise of freedom, and the success of the Quad-City region as a whole. Throughout the week, Davenport is offering a number of perks to active members of the military, veterans, and their families. The City is providing free green fees at its three golf courses, Emeis, Duck Creek, and Red Hawk, to veterans and active duty military and their families during the week. Veterans, military, and their families can also ride CitiBus free during Military Appreciation Week. The Quad City River Bandits will provide up to four free tickets to active service members and veterans The contents of the Island Insight are not necessarily the official views of, or endorsed by, the U.S. Government, the Department of Defense, or the Department of the Army. Army Demonstrates Extended Ranges for Precision Munitions The Army recently demonstrated extended ranges for the guided multiple launch rocket system, and two 155mm cannon artillery precision munitions. Aligning with the Army's top priority -- Long- Range Precision Fires --- these changes support the force's need for both close and deep-strike capabilities against a near-peer adversary. Last fall, the Army conducted demonstrations of the new XM1113 and Excalibur M982 munitions from a prototype Extended Range Cannon Artillery, or ERCA self-propelled howitzer. The XM1113 Insensitive Munition High Explosive Rocket Assisted Projectile is slated to replace the Army's aging M549A1 rounds. Currently, the M549 rounds can reach about 30 km. Thank You for Supporting SAAPM, SHARP April 2019 was full of events supporting the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Program and highlighting Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). On the last day of the month, individuals and groups across Rock Island Arsenal wore teal, the symbolic color of the SHARP program. Many joined together for photos, which were submitted to the event organizers. It may seem like a simple thing, but this annual Teal Tuesday event empowers supporters to show their commitment to making the workplace a safe and respectful environment. No individual or group is too small or insignificant.
