The proclamation recognizes Rock Island Arsenal and its military commands and the Arsenal's importance to the region, as well as Davenport and Rock Island's riverfront improvements since RiverVision was instituted 15 years ago. Scott County Supervisor Ken Croken, a long-time organizer of Red, White and Boom! accepted the proclamation from Mayor Frank Klipsch. First Army D-Day Event Rescheduled To July 4, Modern Woodmen Park On Thursday, July 4, a true hometown hero will be honored by the Quad Cities community and the River Bandits at a 75th Anniversary of D-Day commemoration. There will be a pre-game ceremony for Henry Langrehr of Clinton, Iowa, prior to the game at Modern Woodman Park that evening. Langrehr - one of the first American soldiers on the ground in Normandy - will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and the ballpark will tell the community his incredible D-Day story. Anyone who has ever watched the beloved World War II movie, "The Longest Day," already knows some of it: Langrehr is the American paratrooper who crashed through the glass roof of a French greenhouse near the village of Sainte-Mere-Eglise hours before American troops launched onto Omaha Beach. First Army, which planned and commanded the entire D-Day mission, will present a "Greatest Generation" video at the game, featuring Langrehr and other WWII veterans, as well as a video featuring the "First Army Song." If you would like to attend, visit https://www.milb.com/quad-cities/tickets/single-game-tickets and enter promo code "DDay" for discounted tickets. Anyone who purchased tickets for the previously scheduled game on June 6 can redeem them for this game. The game will begin at 6:35 p.m., with the ceremony honoring Langrehr beginning shortly after 6 p.m. DISCLAIMER: This message is informational in nature and does not constitute an endorsement of a non-federal entity. City Native Blazed a Trail in United States Navy A Williamsport native who became the first African American to command a nuclear-powered U.S. submarine helped advance civil rights for minorities. Chancellor Alfonso “Pete” Tzomes died June 13 at the age 74 in Iowa City, Iowa. Since establishment of the U.S. Submarine Force in 1900, only a handful of African Americans held command of a submarine. Overall, Tzomes saw duty while serving in the Navy on five nuclear-powered submarines. Speaking at the Rock Island Arsenal’s Black History Month Observance in February 2015, he recalled a chamber of commerce party in Florida for midshipmen serving on a submarine cruise ported in Key West. Young women from the community were invited to attend, but there were instructions that he specifically not be invited. Next year, the National Museum of the US Army, the first museum to tell the story of the military branch in its entirety, is slated to open. The museum has been in the making since 1814, when the 13th Congress asked the Army to create a space for the preservation of its history. One small problem, though—they didn’t appropriate any money to build it. Now, 205 years and $200 million of public and private funds later, the museum approaches completion. The result? A five-story, 185,000-square-foot, stainless-steel-clad structure that shimmers like a mirage. It’s located in a forest clearing about 20 miles south of DC at Fort Belvoir. Within its walls, gallery spaces will hold more than 1,500 artifacts. Once open in 2020, visitors will be able to come to the museum 364 days a year, for free. (It’ll be closed on Christmas.) Army Futures Command is behind many of the Army's efforts to achieve that overmatch, which include over 30 projects within its Cross-Functional Teams that are responsible for tackling modernization priorities. While speaking at the International Armored Vehicles USA conference Tuesday, Gen. John Murray, the AFC commander, noted robotic combat vehicles as one endeavor that could help Soldiers knock out defenses. During a Joint Warfighting Assessment in May, Murray observed Soldiers and Marines conducting defensive and attack maneuvers using breacher vehicles with robotic capabilities at Yakima Training Center in Washington.
