Unto the Stellar Barony of Namron do We send our warm greetings!

We don’t know when the recovery from this pestilence will happen or what it will look like, but we know that it will happen. We know everyone is excited to get back to practices, events, and hanging out with our friends. We are working closely with our Seneschal to get started back when we safely can. We will keep everyone posted as those decisions are made going forward.

In the meantime, you never cease to amaze us!

Despite the difficulty of present circumstances, you all do a wonderful job of finding new ways to connect with each other and keep the dream that is the SCA alive. The list of ways you have continued to play in the SCA include online get-togethers, scribal and illumination projects, sewing heraldic face coverings, random acts of kindness, garb sewing, online class taking and teaching, putting together a virtual event, and sharing your thoughts, feelings and memes on Facebook. Please keep at it! Please stay involved in our community and keep Namron strong!

In service to the Barony, Micolay and Uliana Baron and Baroness of Namron Lord and Lady of Skorragardr

The Plume April 2020

For those who do not know, May 1st rings in the SCA New Year. It was 54 years ago that a medieval themed backyard party to celebrate May Day dawned the internationally loved Society for Creative Anachronism.

10

The Plume April 2020

To help us celebrate this event, here are some musing from Baroness Ayesha de Warwick on her time within the Society.

● I have been in the SCA so long it ● My grandchildren and my was only a single digit year brother's grandchildren are 4th when I started. Because we use generation SCA*. Roman numerals, though, it ● My great-niece first went to wasn't. Pennsic when she was five. Her ● I have been in the SCA so long mother had told her she would that my first membership card meet queens and kings, so she was before numbers... And it went around asking everyone was hand written in with a Coronet if they were a calligraphy... And I still have it. queen. Some were. She told us ● My sisters were teenagers when she was going to be entering they first started playing when kindergarten and she was going they went to college at to tell everyone she had met Michigan State (which is the The Queen of Texas, but she Barony of North Woods). knew no one would believe her. ● My sister once talked my father So smart. into driving to Pennsic and camping... He was in Montana at the time.

There are stories that we do not want to lose from those who have been playing for several years. Think of the things that they’ve seen, done, and heard. Think towards the future when you’re children are bringing their children to events and the things you can tell them (remember in year 54 when we were all stuck in our homes and couldn’t get together at all and had to hang out virtually?)

My Challenge to YOU: keep a journal for this year of the things you did within the SCA. I would love to hear about them next New Year!

*Chronicler’s Note: Remember, when you see David, Remington, and Oswin, that they’re 4TH GENERATION SCA MEMBERS!!! How amazing is that?!

The Plume April 2020

From the Minister of Children

Greetings to the Amazing Populace of Namron!

I hope all are doing well and finding ways to busy yourselves. May Day is upon us. Now time to celebrate. Mayday is a wonderful springtime celebration that takes place on May 1st. This special day has its roots in ancient history. A very long time ago the ancient Greeks celebrated the Festival of Chloris and the Romans celebrated . Both of these festivals were in honour of the goddess of flowers. Over time these springtime festivals have evolved into the May Day celebrations that take place around the world today.

There are many ways to celebrate. Some activities you can do at home are; make your own mini maypole, make a flower crown, or a number of flower crafts. (I could list so many). Don't forget things that take place outside and in nature. It is always a great idea to get out for some fresh and sunshine. Go for a nature hike, pick some wildflower. Don't want to pick the flowers? Take a blanket, a drawing pad or paper, pencil, and try drawing the flowers and whatever else interests you. Take a picnic lunch with you when you do. One of my favorite springtime activities of course is planting. Plant some flowers. Maybe plant some flowers in little pots to give to family or friends to help them celebrate May Day.

Today we experimented preparing for our upcoming Virtual Beltane! Be on the lookout for instructions posted to the Book of Face and in email to follow along at home. Please forgive our video taking skills for when we post for Beltane. This is all a learning process and I'm working on tweaking some editing.

We hope to see what you do for Mayday and Beltane. Please share in the Namron group if you are comfortable doing so. Miss everyone and hope to be able to finally do an event as MoC in the near...ish future.

Yours in Service, Dýrfinna Mikaelsdóttir Namron Minister of Children

The Plume April 2020

Make Your Own Mini Maypole

You Will Need -Dowel rods in a size of your choosing (used here, 12″ rods)

-Ribbon

-pushpins (1 for each rod)

–mini flowers to decorate the top

-a hot glue gun

13

The Plume April 2020

Step 1 Fold each length of ribbon in half over the top of the dowel rod. Stack them on top of each other crosswise. Use as many ribbons as you like. Just remember, the thicker the stack, the harder it is to get the pushpin in.

Step 2 Press a pushpin into the top of the dowel rod where the ribbons intersect.

Step 3 Hot glue mini flowers on the pushpin to finish off the look.

If you plan to do this with little kids, make sure to do this part yourself to avoid burnt little fingers! Let them participate by choosing the flowers themselves.

Variations There are lots of ways to customize this craft. For example:

-Try weaving the ribbons around the pole about 1/3 of the way down and then letting the loose ends dangle.

-Paint the pole an appropriate color.

-Swap out the flowers at the top for anything you like.

Happy Beltane, everyone!!

From the Herald

Greetings Namron!

I'm still plugging away at submissions during this time. Work on submissions is still slow at times due to mundane work, but working as I can.

If you have discussed a submission with me, trust that I am working on it, even if you haven't heard back from me. I'm working through the list.

Once we can meet again regularly, I look forward to submitting all the amazing submissions we have been working on. YIS, HL Villana Palazolo Namron Herald

From the Workbench of

the Knight Marshal Greetings, Namron- I’m still working on loaner armor and getting my yard ready for when we can practice on it. Lord Oddr Marsson has posted some videos that are well worth looking at so, please check them out. Hopefully, by the time everybody reads this tome, we will be back to collecting new sets of bruises and new stories from our friends! Oh yes, please be aware of snakes this time of year. I have heard them rattling at me from the shrubbery. Please be careful when you are out working your flower beds and gardens!

Hospitaler’s Pen and Quill

reetings, Great Barony of Namron~

I want to extend my heartfelt to all of you for allowing me the opportunity t hank you to serve as your Hospitaler for the best Barony in the Known World for the past (almost) two years! Each and every one of you has made me feel welcomed when I first took this office with only a couple of months SCA experience. For this, I am eternally grateful.

The time has come for me to pass the touch of guiding newcomers to all things SCA!

I would like to acknowledge my STAR Team of deputies, Lady Nuala Keene, Lady Katheryn Cranesgrove, and Lord Ragnar Kelson of Durham, that selfishly served as my Hospitaler Team! It has been my very best honor to have served with all three of them and I will forever miss our “Hospitaler Team!”

I will miss being your Hospitaler but I know it is time for me to hand the torch over to another person to continue on.

I will always remain in your service, Lady Ophelia Namron Hospitaler

May Black Star Snapshot

Kingdom Combat Archery Marshal is looking for a deputy and the deadline is May 31.

Greetings,

I am Annabelle Fitzsimmons, your new Treasurer. I would like to thank Lord Oddr for filling in as Emergency Treasurer. I have not completed the report for this month yet. I will have the information on our account at our next populace meeting.

If anyone needs anything, feel free to contact me. Requests for checks must be approved by the Financial Committee and must be accompanied by dedicated receipts. This means nothing else may be purchased on the same recepit.

If there is anyone wishing to be a deputy treasurer, please contact me. This job isn’t terribly hard.

I look forward to serving as your Treasurer.

The Plume April 2020

Riddles have been around for centuries, the known oldest documented one being from M esopotamia from Lagash circa 2350 BC. Ancient and medieval literature is full of riddles. They were used both to bring suspense to the text and to pass on cultural tradition. One example would be the double meanings hidden in the written words that composed the foundation of the knowledge of medieval scholars. The Exeter Book, an anthology of Old English literature from the 10th century, is a treasure trove of some medieval brain teasers.

Test your smarts and see if you can best this medieval mystification:

A thing came marvelously moving over the waves, comely from the keel up. It called out to the land, loudly resounding. Its laughter was horrible, awful in its place. Its edges were sharp; hateful it was, and sluggish to battle, bitter in its hostile deeds. It dug into shield-walls, hard, ravaging. It spread mischievous spells. It spoke with cunning craft about its creation: “Dearest of women is indeed my mother; she is my daughter grown big and strong. It is known to men of old, among all people, that she shall stand up beautifully everywhere in the world.
