Finding Aid of the Los Angeles 0117301 1 Corral of Westerners records 0117 Contributing Institution: USC Libraries Special Collections Title: Los Angeles Corral of Westerners records Creator: Westerners. Los Angeles Corral Creator: Blew, Robert Creator: Cavallo, Joseph Creator: Denzel, Carl Creator: Duke, Donald Creator: Hull, Lonnie Creator: Nelson, Eric A. Creator: Newton, Frank Q. Creator: Nunis, Doyce B. (Doyce Blackman), 1924-2011 Creator: Robinson, John W., 1929- Identifier/Call Number: 0117 Identifier/Call Number: 301 Physical Description: 202.8 Linear Feet112 boxes, 5 scrapbooks, 3 mapcase folders Date (inclusive): 1946-2019 Abstract: The Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners was founded in 1946 and promotes the study and understanding of Western history through publications and events. This collection contains correspondence, financial and publication records, photographs, artifacts, scrapbooks and drafts of articles documenting the history of the Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners. Language of Material: English . Historical Note The first Westerners Corral was established in Chicago in 1944 with the aim of promoting the study and understanding of Western history. Soon, corrals were springing up all over the United States-- and even internationally-- with the Los Angeles corral being established in 1946 by oil executive Homer Britzman--who also was elected founding Sheriff. The last remaining founding member, Glen Dawson, was one of the L.A. Corral's early Sheriffs and was a well-known rock climber, mountaineer, antiquarian bookseller (Dawson's Bookshop in Los Angeles, founded by his father Ernest Dawson), and also served as Director of the Sierra Club from 1937 to 1951. The Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners regularly convenes to hear historians and other speakers present western-related topics as well as to celebrate the western spirit through annual Rendezvous and Fandangos. The Corral has published 22 Brand Books, almost 250 Branding Irons, and numerous other publications. Originally restricted to men, the organization now welcomes and encourages women to participate in the Corral. Scope and Content This collection contains the records of the Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners, including correspondence pertaining to Westerner activities, membership and publications, financial records, the publication records of works published by the group, audiocassettes and DVDs of Westerner programs and lectures, and scrapbooks of photographs of Westerner events. The publication records for the Branding Iron (a quarterly periodical), the Brand Book (an annual or bi-annual monograph length publication) and Keepsakes (irregular publications) include correspondence with authors, drafts of articles including art, floppy and zip disks, and proofs. Artifacts found in the collection include printing plates and a plaque. One of the larger series, the John W. Robinson collection, is comprised of Robinson's subject files, maps, and photographs-- many of which served as research for a number of books that he authored. Arrangement Within series, records are generally arranged in chronological order. Whenever possible, files that were the provenance of individual members were kept together with their original file headings, although sometimes spelled out more completely for clarity. Conditions Governing Access COLLECTION STORED OFF-SITE. Advance notice required for access. Consult finding aid for additional information. Conditions Governing Use The collection contains published articles; researchers are reminded of the copyright restrictions imposed by publishers on reusing their articles and parts of books. It is the responsibility of researchers to acquire permission from publishers when reusing such materials. The copyright to unpublished materials belongs to the heirs of the writers. It began in 1947 as The Brand Book, but after five issues was re-named The Branding Iron. It features articles on the history of Los Angeles, Southern California, and the West, along with book reviews, and news about the Corral and its members. Many of the articles were written by noted scholars and local historians. The early numbering is not consecutive because other Corral publications including some Keepsakes, were originally included along with the quarterly. This series comprises the publications themselves, along with correspondence and sales information related to its publishing.

Information 2005 Photographs 1948-2009 Scope and Contents This rather large series is comprised of a few formal portraits of Westerner personalities, but the bulk of it is candid "activity" photographs of Westerners at various fandangos, rendezvous, field trips, etc. Many of the photographs were credited to Ken Pauley, Glen Dawson, Frank Q. Newton, Jr., and Iron Eyes Cody-- but most of the photographs were not labeled with the names of the photographer. The subseries of slides appear to all have been the provenance of Frank Q. Newton, Jr. who also kept detailed logbooks of his images with technical photography/ camera data. Additional photographs are in scrapbooks in the Scrapbooks series.

Box 37, Folder 7 Hoofprints 1971 Westerners Publications 1947-2019 Scope and Contents The chief publication of the L.A. Corral is the Brand Book, of which there are twenty-three as of 2019. The published hard-bound copies are in this series, along with a few other works published by the society. Also of interest is a book authored by Nicholas A. Curry and Stuart F. Robinson titled Glen Dawson at 100 (2012), Dawson being one of the earliest founders of the L.A. Corral. Like his father, Ernest Dawson, Glen was a mountain climber, antiquarian bookseller, publisher, historian, and Sierra Club president. In 1990, Glen Dawson was instrumental in assisting the FBI with the conviction of Stephen Blumberg, a thief who had compulsively stolen rare books from at least 327 libraries. As an expert witness, he testified for the U.S. Government at Blumberg's trial that 271 items taken from the Connecticut State Library were worth over $225,000. Dawson is a resident of Pasadena, California, and celebrated his 100th birthday in June 2012.

Most of the titles were copied just as they appear on the tapes or disks, unless there was an obvious spelling error that could be corrected.

John W. Robinson Files Biographical Note John W. Robinson, a prominent western historian and mountaineer, was born in Long Beach, California in 1929. He received his B.A. from the University of Southern California in 1951 and his M.A. from California State University, Long Beach in 1966. He taught school in Orange County for 35 years and was well-known for his trail guides and histories of the mountains of Southern California. In 1992, Robinson received the Donald H. In 2005, the Historical Society of Southern California presented Robinson with the Fellows Award medallion, honoring "exceptional lifetime achievements that have brought distinction to history." Scope and Contents This series consists of the large collection of research files that Robinson maintained and used in the writing of his many books and trail guides. The subject files are comprised of articles, drafts, news clippings, and some photographs kept in their original arrangement which was basically geographical. The collection of photographs in this series is also organized by geographic region, the bulk of them being of the San Bernardino Mountains and the . The third subseries consists of a collection of maps-- folded road maps as well as large rolled maps-- chiefly of Southern California, but also encompassing some areas of Northern California (i.e. Yosemite) and other areas of the country (Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, etc.) Locations of Related Materials Some of John W. Robinson's other photographs, maps, and manuscript materials can be found at the following locations: The Idyllwild Area Historical Society (www.idyllwildhistory.org/index.html); the Sherman Library & Gardens (www.slgardens.org); and the A.K.
