Thanks to my wife Laurie and seven children (Meghan, Haleigh, Natalie, Jared, Samuel, Ella and Bridget) for allowing me to steal from our time together to prepare this document.

A special thanks to Dr. , a.k.a. Dr. Dino (www.drdino.com). Your ministry to present evidence for creation and support for the Genesis record lives on in this commentary. The ability to copy your work for free distribution has made this document possible. All but one picture has come from Dr. Hovind’s Seminar PowerPoint slides.

Thanks to Michele Scott, my secretary for deciphering my Genesis notes in my old to make this commentary come together.

Thanks Lord, for making your handiwork so obvious in your creation so as to leave all who will consider it without any excuse regarding your existence.

Rom 1:18-25 For the wrath of is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man -- and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

The big questions:

How did I get here? Where did this all come from? Where will I go after this? Why am I here?

The answers to these questions are in startling contrast depending on your world view of this nature and its origin.

A creationist world view is you are here by the creative plan of God who loves you as His own and has a purpose for your live. The answers to the big questions are: you are here to enter a relationship with the God who created you, bring glory to Him on this earth and then to retire from this earth into His presence in the life that is to come.

An evolutionist world view is you have evolved from a series of random, freak occurrences to arrive at your current place in life. The answers to the big questions are: you are not sure why you are here; there is no plan for your life. All that you see, sense and enjoy of this Earth came from a massive explosion 20 billion of years ago. When you cease to live you will cease to exist. There are no absolutes, no rules but what your society has foisted upon you, no God, no future, no judgments and lastly no purpose to you life, other than to spawn the next generation.

So which is the correct answer? What does “scientific” examination of the earth reveal?

True is the process of making observations, drawing conclusions, formulating a hypothesis and then testing that hypothesis to see if it is valid. If your hypothesis passes your testing it can become a theory. Theories that have are testable, repeatable and consistent in the results become eventually accepted as fact, but again only if they are truly verified by extensive repeatable testing.

So which world view is truly more scientific the creationist or the evolutionist? It is my hope as you consider the Genesis record/account written by Moses under God’s instruction that the answer will be come very clear to you.

There are at least six different and unrelated meanings to the word “.” Students are deceived into thinking all six types of evolution below have been proven because evidence is given for minor variations called Micro-evolution. 1. Cosmic evolution – the origin of time, space, and matter. Big Bang. 2. Chemical evolution – the origin of higher elements from hydrogen. 3. Stellar and planetary evolution – Origin of stars and planets.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 4 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

4. Organic evolution – Origin of life from inanimate matter. 5. Macro-evolution – Changing from one kind into another. (Yet no transitional forms exist…there should be millions of them) 6. Micro-evolution – Variations within kinds. Only this one has been observed.

This deception is a classic bait and switch. One definition of evolution (decent with modification) is given, and the others are assumed to be true by association. The first five meanings are believed by faith and are religious. Only the last one is scientific. (Hovind)

Even granting generous assumptions to evolutionists, the seas could not be more than 62 million years old – far younger than billions of years believed by evolutionists. Again, this indicates a maximum age, not the actual age.” (Austin and Humphreys) (Sarfati)

Introduction to the Book of Genesis

Genesis is a grand introduction to the history of redemption. (Irwin)

The name “Genesis” comes from the book’s first word “Bereshith” in Hebrew which means “in the beginning”.

Genesis is one of five books called the Word of God in Joshua 1:7-8.

It is the first book of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. Its authorship is ascribed to Moses. This is supported by the following considerations: 1. The Pentateuch itself affirms Moses as its author (Ex. 17:14; 24:4, 7; 34:27; Num. 33:1-2; Deut. 31:9) 2. Other Old Testament books testify to the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch (Josh. 1:7-8; 8:32, 34; 22:5; 1 Kings 2:3; 2 Kings 14:6; 21:8; Ezra 6:18; Dan. 9:11-13; Mal. 4:4)

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 12 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

3. The New Testament affirms the same (Matt. 19:8; Mark 12:26; John 5:46-47; 7:19; Rom. 10:5) 4. Eyewitness details point to a participant being the author, not an editor who lived centuries later (Ex. 15:27; Num. 2:1-31; 11:7-8) 5. The author’s information about Egyptian names, words, customs, and geography would have been difficult for an author or editor to have obtained in Canann centuries after Moses’ time (Gen. 13:10; 16:1-3; 33:18; 41:43; Acts 7:22). Archaeological discoveries, many since World War I, have demonstrated the historical accuracy of the Pentateuch and have brought to light customs practiced in the second millennium B.C. that were not practiced in the first millennium B.C. How, then, would an author have known these customs (e.g. the double portion going to the oldest son, the sale of a birthright, the validity of an oral will; cf. Gen. 48:17-20) unless he had lived during that earlier period?

Therefore Genesis is not a legend. Neither does it hide sins or failures. It simply records them!

Genesis is a book about the beginning of many things: the world, man, sin, civilization, the nations, , language, marriage, government, creation.

Genesis also contains important theological themes: the doctrine of the living, personal God; the doctrine of man made in the image of God, then of sinful man; the anticipation of a Redeemer (3:15); and the covenant promises made to the nation of Israel (12:1-3; 15:18-21).

There are four certain truths found in the book of Genesis (Alfred Edersheim): 1. The creation of all things by the word of God’s power 2. The descent of all men from our common parents, Adam & Eve 3. Our connection with Adam as head of the human race, through which all mankind were involved in his sin and fall 4. One descended from Adam, yet without sin, should by suffering free us from the consequences of the fall, and as the second Adam became the author of eternal salvation to all who trust in Him

The author makes no attempt to provide philosophical or scientific evidence for God’s existence. He assumes it and views everything in light of it.

Gen 1:1-12:1 New Genesis 1

The History of Creation (Gen 2:4-9; Job 38:4-11; John 1:1-5) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. • In the beginning: This is the beginning of time • God “Elohim” in the Hebrew. (El = 1; Elim = 2; Elohim = 3 or more) God (Elohim) created, “Bara” is used in the 3rd person masculine singular God in three persons but not polytheism. • The great Shema of Israel as stated in Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: One is Echad in the Hebrew the same word used in Gen 2:24 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. KJV • “Bara” created: (Ex nihilo or from nothing), expresses absolute creation • Created: 1st use of Hebrew word “bara”, Strong’s H1254 1) to create, shape, form 1a) (Qal) to shape, fashion, create (always with God as subject) 1a1) of heaven and earth 1a2) of individual man 1a3) of new conditions and circumstances 1a4) of transformations 1b) (Niphal) to be created 1b1) of heaven and earth 1b2) of birth 1b3) of something new 1b4) of 1c) (Piel) 1c1) to cut down 1c2) to cut out

• It has often been pointed out that if a person really believes Genesis 1:1, he will not find it difficult to believe anything else recorded in the Bible. That God really created all things and can do all things and controls all things. (Henry Morris) • Archbishop James Ussher (1581-1656) computed the date of creation as 4004 B.C.

2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. • Spirit: “Ruach”, breath, wind

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 14 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Some have seen a middle stage of creation here. That is, an unfinished work of creation that was later developed (v3-25) into the present form. But this cannot be sustained by the syntax or the vocabulary (Morris). • The middle stage has often be called the “Gap Theory” Chalmers, Crawford Toy and others espoused this view in the 1870’s in response to the rising popularity of and evolution. • The text is prose and not poetry as evidenced by the frequent use of the ww consecutive. This is the grammatical device normally employed to describe sequential acts chronologically connected to the verse before and after. Every verse in the first chapter but 1:1 begins with the conjunction and (ww) clearly indicating that each statement is sequentially and chronologically connected to the verses before and after. (Morris) • “And” here and in Genesis 22:1-17 there are examples of what is known as a Polysyndeton the “and’s” linking the verses) it is a continued, deliberate un- vacillating action; in Genesis 22 Abraham obeyed God immediately. (No Gap!) • Gap Theory and Day Age Theories do not work and are not supported by the text’s construction! • “Polysyndeton-the repetition of connectives or conjunctions in close succession for rhetorical effect.” (American Heritage Dictionary)

3 Then God said, “Let there be light"; and there was light. • This verse is the first record of God’s speech. • Matter was created and energized • 2 Corinthians 4: 3-6 mentions the light in our hearts • Electromagnetic, gravitational and nuclear forces started (Morris) • Deut. 4:19 and 17:3 instruct us not to worship the sun and moon.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. • Light: Rev. 22:5 says “There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.” • In reference to that light, the rotating earth passed through a day-night cycle (Ryrie).

5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. • The first day: Ex. 20:11 “in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth” • Night and day are the Hebrew reckoning of time (e.g. Jesus dead Friday + Saturday + Sunday = three days)

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 15 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." • No land yet. • Please note where the birds of the air flew in verse 20 of this chapter…in the firmament. Also note where the waters were divided in verse 7, see below. This is the sky, atmosphere, air or first heaven as noted in the Bible. The first Heaven is the atmosphere, the second heaven is outer space where the sun and the planets are, the third heaven is the place of God’s throne, see 2 Corinthians 12:2.

7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.

Canopy of water overhead and water under the crust of the earth. Picture courtesy Dr. Carl Baugh Photos courtesy www.drdino.com

• Gen 2:5-6 states that God had not caused it to rain on the earth • Gen. 7:11, 18-20; 8:2-5 tell the account of the great flood of ’s time when water was released from the windows of heaven see chapter 7:11. • Job 38:8-11 God states He set the boundary of the seas in creation • A water canopy would filter out ultraviolet radiations & cosmic rays known to be the source of somatic and genetic mutations (We call this aging!) which decrease the viability of the individual and the species – both animal and human (Morris) • The would also produce an environment with a greater oxygen level and increased air pressure… some feel much like a Hyper baric chamber (Hovind) • This is only part of the water source for the flood as will be revealed in chapter 7. The Flood was such a serious event that God promised Noah never again would He destroy the Earth with a flood. He gave the Rainbow as a token of the covenant He made with Noah. God keeps a copy in heaven. o Rev. 4:3 makes reference to a “rainbow around the throne”. o 2 Peter 3:7 says that the heavens and the earth are reserved for fire until the Day of Judgment. God will again judge the earth, but not with a flood.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so. • There was probably a larger land area • More plants, which were larger, more abundant living things also larger • Cockroaches 18 inches found in fossil record (Hovind) • Centipedes 8 ½ feet long in fossil record (Hovind) • fly’s with 3 foot wingspans in Fossil record (Hovind)

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 17 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• He called seas: Naming indicates sovereignty and dominion over His creation

11 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth"; and it was so. • Bring forth: sprout; Grown out of the ground not by the self-developing powers of the earth, but through the energy of creative power without rain, dew, or any process of labor or cultivation (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) • Grass: “that which is green, grows green, or sprouts” rd th • Day Age theory fails here for the plants 3 day, there is no sun until the 4 day or bugs to pollinate the plants until the 6th day! • Herb: plants • According to its kind: so as to perpetuate its sort or species; There are fixed boundaries beyond which reproductive variations cannot go, but it is impossible to know whether “kind” is to be equated with families, genera, or some other category or biological classification (Ryrie). • Whose seed is in itself: i.e. mature, bearing seeds so as to perpetuate its species.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 So the evening and the morning were the third day. rd • Sometime prior to the 3 day of creation, a multitude of angels were created, since they were present when the foundations of the earth were (3rd day verse 9) laid, Job 38:7. Probably the solid land surface.(Morris) • Note the repetition of according to its kind. The Bible indicates that all living things will ONLY reproduce after their kind. While there may be variation (Micro-evolution) within that kind, it will still be the same kind. A Coregi and a Great Dane, while different, are only variations of the same kind…dogs.

14 Then God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; • Lights in: luminarres – “Light giver/bearer” an entirely different word than in verse 3 “light” (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) • Firmament of the heavens = Outer space • Heavens: note plural seen in the first heaven, located in the second heaven. • Signs: Joel 2:31 (sun turned into darkness, moon into blood), Matt. 24:29 (judgment; sun & moon darkened, stars fall, powers of the heavens shaken), Rev 6:12 (great earthquake, sun became black, moon became like blood) what folly to worship the planets! • Days: 24 hours from the word “Yom” in Hebrew, means “day”. Note the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 19 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Moses uses the word “Yom” (day) and variants of it (days) some 280 times in the Pentateuch always as day or days. • Years: In the time of Daniel the prophet (Daniel chapter 9:24 written in 539 B.C.) and John the Beloved Disciple (Revelation chapter 11:3 written in 90 A.D.) they used a 360 day calendar year. Today we use a 365 day year. • The earth is slowing annually. We often add a leap second, thought not every year, leap seconds are becoming more frequent. • Ps 19:1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.

15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. • For lights in the firmament: where men behold them

16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. • The greater light to rule the day = sun • Lesser light = moon • He made the stars also: Oh, by the way! • Reflection: Job 38:31 says "Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the belt of Orion? Interesting Orion has six planets in it which are not orbiting a star, defying a big bang for their creation.

17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth,

18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens." • Abound: swarm with swarms • In other words birds should abruptly appear in the fossil record with no transitional forms! • Abundance: no 1/8 celled hoping to evolve everything being fully created! Life should abruptly appear in the fossil record according to the Bible. Exactly what we view in nature. • Living thing: “nephesh”, Strong’s H5315 1) soul, self, life, creature, person, appetite, mind, living being, desire, emotion, passion

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 20 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

1a) that which breathes, the breathing substance or being, soul, the inner being of man 1b) living being 1c) living being (with life in the blood) 1d) the man himself, self, person or individual 1e) seat of the appetites 1f) seat of emotions and passions 1g) activity of mind 1h) activity of the will 1i) activity of the character

21 So God created great sea creatures (“monsters”) and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. nd • Created: 2 use of Hebrew word “bara”, Strong’s H1254 1) to create, shape, form (from nothing) 1a) (Qal) to shape, fashion, create (always with God as subject) 1a1) of heaven and earth 1a2) of individual man 1a3) of new conditions and circumstances 1a4) of transformations 1b) (Niphal) to be created 1b1) of heaven and earth 1b2) of birth 1b3) of something new 1b4) of miracles

• Creatures: tanniym, Strong’s H8577, an intensive form of marine or a land monster (i.e. sea serpent, dragon, sea monster)

• Every living thing: every living soul (nephesh, Strong’s H5315)

• Winged bird: so it’s the chicken then egg

• According to its kind: so as to perpetuate its sort or species; There are fixed boundaries beyond which reproductive variations cannot go, but it is impossible to know whether “kind” is to be equated with families, genera, or some other category or biological classification (Ryrie). • This means there should be no transitional forms. Mutations are almost always a loss of information and seldom more viable when a mutation occurs

22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." • The fertility of life comes from the blessing of the true God

23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind"; and it was so. • Living creature: nephesh, Strong’s H5315 • Cattle: large, domesticated quadrupeds…dinosaurs too! • According to its kind: so as to perpetuate its sort or species; There are fixed boundaries beyond which reproductive variations cannot go, but it is impossible to know whether “kind” is to be equated with families, genera, or some other category or biological classification (Ryrie).

25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. • God made: asah Strong’s H6213 “made” this time and not Bara “from nothing”. God had already created souls “nephesh” in verse 21.

• According to its kind: so as to perpetuate its sort or species; There are fixed boundaries beyond which reproductive variations cannot go, but it is impossible to know whether “kind” is to be equated with families, genera, or some other category or biological classification (Ryrie).

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." • Creation’s climax • Let “Us” and “Our”: A divine conference of the Godhead; something not seen at any other step of creation (Wiersbe). • Make: asah, Strong’s H6213 Yet bara is used in verse 27 • Man was both made “asah” and created “bara” = (from nothing). • Image: Jesus points out we are in God’s image in Luke 20:20. • 1 Thess 5:23 tells us man has a body, soul and spirit: ° Plants have a body ° Animals have a body and a soul “nephesh” ° Man has a body (“soma” Strong’s #4983 in Greek), ° Man has a soul (“psuche” #5590 in Greek) Self- aware/personality, consciousness ° Man has a spirit (“pneuma” #4151 in Greek). The realm through which man has fellowship with God. Animals do not have this!

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 22 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

° Remember, you shall surely die in the day that you eat thereof, but Adam lived 930 years…so what died? Adam died spiritually! ° This is why man must be born again! See John chapter 3, Ephesians chapter 2. • Image of God must entail those aspects of human nature which are not shared by animals – moral consciousness, abstract thinking, appreciation of beauty and emotion, and capacity to love and worship God. (Morris)

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. • God created man: bara, Strong’s H1254 • Note the use of “Our” in verse 26 and “His” in this verse

28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." • Fill: not replenish; the word cannot be used to support the idea of a refilling of the earth after destruction of an earlier civilization, as some theories hold (Ryrie). • Replenish at the time of the King Kames translation meant to fill. After the King James version was translated the word began to mean to refill or fill again (Hovind) • Subdue: military terms, conquer and rule • Have dominion: man was given the highest place in creation; did not evolve! • Jesus had dominion over the fish (Luke 5, Matthew 17:24), fowl (Matthew 26:74-75) and the beasts (Matthew 21:1-7) and weather (Matthew 8:21-27)

29 And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.

30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so. • Man was not given meat to eat until after the Flood (Gen 9:3) • Panda bears have fang like teeth and are yet vegetarian.

31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. • Very Good! This is the seventh time that God notes His creation as being “good”. Clearly it was perfect at this time. ° Lucifer had not yet fallen (Ezekiel 28/Iasiah 14) and become . Ezek. “You were in Eden”…then iniquity found in him

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 23 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

° No death had entered, because Adam had not yet sinned (see Romans 5:12-14 and 1 Corinthians 15:21). • Very good! Not if you hold to a Gap Theory or the Day Age theory, they involve death before Adam’s sin, that contradicts Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15:21

Genesis 2

“It is a peculiar feature of Hebrew historical writing to give a general account of a fact first, and then to repeat it with additional details.” (Goldman, Rev. Dr. S. (1951). Samuel. Soncino Press.)

The Garden of Eden 1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. • Thus or “and” the heavens and the earth • Finished = the completion of the work • Lucifer (Satan) is not yet fallen Ezekiel 28:13

2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. • Rested: not fatigue nor inactivity but cessation from His creative work (Irwin) • Exodus 20:9-11 God wrote in stone with His finger that He created the world in six days. Umm, that would be a young Earth then!

• Ex 20:9-11 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

• God “rested” that is He ceased from His creative work.

• Psalm 121:4 says “Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

• Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is un-searchable.

3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. • Sabbath means “to cease”

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 24 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Special covenant, sign between God and Israel: Exodus 31:17 says “It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." (see v12-17 for context as well as Ezekiel 20:12) • Ignoring the Sabbath becomes part of Israel’s judgment: 2 Chron 36:21 • Israel went into captivity because they failed to keep the Sabbath (Neh 13:15- 22). • Sabbath is God’s indication that time to rest and worship Him is essential in our relationship with Him.

4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, • Note no evening and morning to be carried forward

• Some think Adam recorded this Morris Gen 2:4b-5:1

• Day: yom, Strong’s H3117, can also mean time

• Even non-believing Hebrew scholars indicate the most simple and clear word to use to indicate a day is “yom”

• Lord God: Yaweh (Jehovah) Elohim; Yaweh is the most significant name for God in the O.T. It has a twofold meaning: the active, self-existent One (since the word is connected with the verb meaning “to be”, Ex. 3:14); and Israel’s Redeemer (Ex. 6:6). It is especially associated with God’s holiness (Lev. 11:44-45), His hatred of sin (Gen. 6:3-7), and His glorious provision of redemption (Isa. 53:1, 5, 6, 10).

• The Jews held the name of God to be so holy that its pronunciation is uncertain to us today. Only the High Priest would utter the name of God and that only on the Day of Atonement.

5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; • Before day two and three verse 6 was implemented 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. • Again before day two and three verse 6 was implemented

7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. • Formed: yasar, describes the work of an artist (Bible Knowledge Commentary) • Man: “Adam”… related to ground • It is a scientific fact that all the elements in man’s physical body are found in the dust of the ground (G. Campbell Morgan). (carbon-chlorine, phosphorus,

fluorine, nitrogen, magnesium, silicum, aluminum, potassium, sodium, calcium, iron, manganese, titanium, oxygen, hydrogen) • Breathed (see Ezekiel 37) Communicating to the dust the very life of God (G. Campbell Morgan) • Living being: nephesh, Strong’s H5315

Life in God's Garden 8 The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. • Eastward: east • Garden the Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew has “Paradise” for Garden • Eden: pleasantness or delight

9 And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. • Tree of life: “Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever" (Gen 3:22) • The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were apparently close to each other.

10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.

11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. • Pishon: overflowing

12 And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. • Bdellium and Onyx are gems • Gold easily available

13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. • Gihon: bursting forth

14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. • Hiddekel: swift arrow • Euphrates: fruitful abundance

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 26 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• The area being described is familiar to the Author. Adam saw it, Noah could have seen it and passed on the information.

15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. • Took: led him personally? • Keep it: work! • The work he did was service to God • Trees, river, gold, gems and God’s presence with man take a look at Revelation chapters 21 & 22!

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;

17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." • First use of command; God’s first command involved life and death, good and evil! • Adam’s response? “Gee, where is it?” • Surely die is literally “dying you shall die” (Ryrie) • Adam was a perfect creature, never having sinned but he had the ability to sin • Deut 30:11 “For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off.”

18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." • The word “good” has already been used seven times now, but now something is not good. • Comparable: corresponding; agreeable, equivalent, suitable

19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. • Naming them represents Adam’s dominion over them

20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. • God brings the problem!

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 27 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• God brings the answer!

22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. • Rib: not a foot to make her a door mat • Rib: not a hand bone to make her a handmaiden • Rib: not part of the skull, she was not to rule over him • Rib: the closest place near his heart • Made: built, like a temple; • Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown describe “built” as implying extraordinary skill, care, and taste in the plan and proportions of the structure

23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." • This is now bone of my bones: emphatic in the Hebrew

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one (Hebrew “echad”) flesh. • Leave: cleave, separation; no going home to mom – work it out! • Be joined: glued, permanence; It’s not love that holds a marriage together but marriage commitment allows love to grow – seasons • Become one: weave, intimacy • Echad the same word God uses to describe himself as “One Lord”: in the great Shema of Israel…Deuteronomy 6:4, see also Isaiah 48:16 for a further self - defining of Himself as a compound one • Isa 48:16 "Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me." st • God institutes the 1 marriage (Adam, Eve, God); God in the middle • God intended husband and wife to be a spiritual, functional unity, walking in integrity, serving God and keeping His commandments together (Wiersbie)

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. • Were not ashamed: at least with each other; absence of sin

Genesis 3

The Temptation and Fall of Man (Rom 5:12-21) • Fall of Man = sin of man; can’t be blamed on environment or heredity!

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 28 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" • Serpent: not some irrational animal; Satan is behind this (Jamieson-Fausset- Brown) • Rev 12:9 “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” • Rev 20:2 “He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years” • Satan always questions God’s Word and uses discontent! • Quite frankly, Evolution is the ultimate questioning of God’s Word and seeks to create doubt and dissatisfaction with God! Has God created? There is no God, no rules, no judgment, do what you want!

2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'" • May eat: Gen 2:16 “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat” • Shall not eat/ touch: (Eve or Adam added to the commandment) Gen 2:17 said “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die”

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. • Satan lies! implying God lies! • John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” • 2 Cor 11:3 “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” • 1 Tim 2:14 “And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.” • Eve was deceived. This is “the lie” that one can sin and get away with it. The truth is that death is the penalty for sin!

5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." • Like God: the pride of life

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 29 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. • Pleasant to the eyes: lust of the eyes

• 2 Cor 11:3-4 (Eve deceived); lust of the flesh

• 1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world.”

• She also gave to her husband: what a trial for Adam!

• And he ate: willingly transgressed, deliberately! Sad! 1 Timothy 2:14

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. • Naked: ill at ease with one another • Made themselves coverings: only God could cover their sin! • Job 31:33 If I have covered my transgressions as Adam, By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,

• The sentence of death which God pronounced on our first parents now extended to both their bodily and their spiritual nature, to their mortal and immortal part. (Alfred Edersheim) • Rom 5:12-14 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. • 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive (by faith in Him Romans 10:9. • died spiritually! Remember Body, Soul and Spirit. ° Man has a body (“soma” Strong’s #4983 in Greek), ° Man has a soul (“psuche” #5590 in Greek) Self- aware/personality, consciousness ° Man has a spirit (“pneuma” #4151 in Greek). The realm through which man has fellowship with God. Animals do not have this! ° Their bodies continued, they were still self-aware, so they died spiritually! Their relationship with God was severed as they had known Him since the beginning!

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 30 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

° This is why man must be born again! John 3:6 John 3:6-7 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

• John 3:3 “Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." • Ephesians 2:1 You hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins!

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. • Hid themselves: note a loss of desire for fellowship with God; ill at ease with one another (v7) and God

• Fear enters the world!

9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" • God went looking for them and did not give up the pursuit; He knew that Adam and Eve had sinned and still He made the approach. No clearer picture could be painted of God’s concern for the lost human race. (Davis)

10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself." • Guilt and shame enter!

11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?" • God requires confession of sin – not to inform Him but to humble the sinner (Irwin)

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate." • The woman: Adam blames Eve; she’s the problem (wimp)

• How many times in counseling have I heard, “It’s the woman’s fault God gave me that we are having trouble.” It didn’t work then, and it does not work now!

• You gave me: Adam blames God (bad move)

• Adam does not ask for forgiveness (heart hardening!)

• God was silent

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 31 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• No denial just blame shifting • Eve does not ask for forgiveness though she has disobeyed God’s word (I have had women do this in counseling too!) • 1 Tim 2:14 “And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.”

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. • He heard about the woman’s seed • Curse has hit animals and nature, too. • Jer 12:4 “How long will the land mourn, And the herbs of every field wither? The beasts and birds are consumed, For the wickedness of those who dwell there, Because they said, "He will not see our final end.” • Rom 8:20 “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope” • Did this happen in front of them?

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel." • John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” • Gal 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ. NKJV • This is the beginning of Bible prophecy (Irwin) • God uses Bible prophecy to validate His existence. • Isaiah 46:9-10 Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying,'My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,' • Isaiah 48:5-7 Even from the beginning I have declared it to you; Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you, Lest you should say, 'My idol has done them, And my carved image and my molded image Have commanded them.' "You have heard; See all this. And will you not declare it? I have made you hear new things from this time, Even hidden things, and you did not know them. They are created now and not from the beginning; And before this day you have not heard them,Lest you should say, 'Of course I knew them.' • He: Jesus of Nazareth • Bruise: crush • “Man” can’t pay for his own sin

16 To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you." • Eve will die, but yet she will live long enough to have children

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. • Adam heeded Eve’s voice, not God’s • Gen 5:29 “And he called his name Noah, saying, "This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed.”

18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. • Thorns- the very evidence of sin was used to crown Jesus! • 2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. NKJV

19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return." • These punishments represent retaliatory justice. Adam and Eve sinned by eating, they would suffer in order to eat. She manipulated her husband; she would be mastered by her husband. The serpent destroyed the human race; he will be destroyed by the God man. (Bible Knowledge Commentary)

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. • Eve: seed to come (v15)

• Of all living: This would preclude the existence of other homo sapiens before the fall! (Davis)

• According to recent evidence – based on the sequencing of DNA in a part of human cells known as mitochondria – it has been proposed that a small population of modern humans evolved in Africa about 150,000 years ago and spread throughout the world, replacing archaic populations of Homo Sapiens. This evidence deals with comparing the DNA from mitochondria. This DNA is inherited only through the mother’s line. The similarities indicate that all people on earth are descended from a single human female. Even evolutionists call her “Mitochondrial Eve.” While this is consistent with the biblical account, we should note that it is not proof. Evolutionists contend that “Mitochondrial Eve” was one of a number of women living. The mitochondrial line of the others would have died out if there were only males in any generation of descendants. Evolutionists believed they had clear proof

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 33 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

against the biblical account, because “Mitochondrial Eve” supposedly lived 200,000 years ago. However, recent evidence shows that mitochondrial DNA mutates far faster than previously thought. (Parsons) If this new evidence is applied to “Mitochondrial Eve,” it indicates that she would have lived only 6,000-6,500 years ago. (Loewe and Scherer) Of course, this is perfectly consistent with the biblically indicated age of the “mother of all living” (Gen. 3:20) (Wieland), but an enigma for evolution/ long age beliefs. Interestingly, there is a parallel account with males: evidence from the Y- chromosome is consistent with all people being descended from a single man. (Dorit, Akashi, and Gilbert). The data is also consistent with a recent date for this “Y-chromosome Adam.” (Batten) (Sarfati)

21 Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them. • Did they see this occur? • How? Did a pre-incarnate Jesus builds altar & sacrifice? • Did they learn, in a type, that an “atonement” (or covering for sin) could only be provided by God and through the shedding of blood on the altar • Lev 17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.” • Heb 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever" –

• In a state of separation from God and deserving of His judgment and wrath. • Angels have no redemption; they made their choices individually, with full knowledge of God in His presence. You and I did not make the choice to sin; we are born into sin because of Adam’s transgression. We sin because we are born sinners from birth. • Rev 22:2 “In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

23 therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

• Drove out: ejected/ dismissal

24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 34 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Cherubim: plural • A flaming sword: singular • Driving Adam and Eve from the garden was both a punishment and an act or mercy lest they should eat of the tree of life and live forever in a state of death and alienation • It may well be by analogy that it was here between the cherubim guarding the tree of life that God continued at intervals to meet Adam and those of his descendants who desired to know Him (Morris)

Genesis 4

Cain Murders Abel (Luke 11:51; Heb 11:4; 12:24) 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, "I have acquired a man from the LORD." • The first human birth!

• Knew: full harmony and understanding of a man and a woman (Morris);

• Knew: a common euphemism for sexual union (Ryrie)

• Cain: I have gotten (Ryrie)

• Did She think this was to fulfill Gen 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”?

• Gen 5:4 says that Adam and Eve “had sons and daughters” 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. • Abel: unity

• Abel: breath or vanity (Ryrie)

3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD.

4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, • Firstlings: Answering by fire? Via the Cheribum’s sword? • Respected: to pay regard to the prayer or request of • Heb 11:4 “By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.”

5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 35 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Cain was angry with God and with Abel

6 So the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?

7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." • Sin: the first time sin is used in the Bible – mentioned by God! • Wow!

8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. • “Let us go out to the field” (Ryrie)

• Cain rejected God’s provision for acceptance with Himself

• Cain was a sinner like Adam, but also a criminal! But their parents were believers! What are you going to blame his environment?

• Abel was righteous: Matt 23:35 “that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.”

9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" • Abel is the first disembodied soul waiting in sheol! (See Luke Chapter 16:19- 31) • Cain’s words combine falsehood, cruelty and contempt for God’s authority (Irwin)

10 And He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. • Blood: the first time blood is mentioned in the Bible • Every sin has a voice of crimination against the sinner (Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown )

11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth." • A fugitive? Why? Because the ground will no longer yield good harvests to Cain

13 And Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is greater than I can bear!

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 36 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Punishment: iniquity • Not undeserved – but too much to bear

14 Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me." • Cain blames God – like Adam! • Hidden from your face and presence: Adam and Eve should have thought this as well when they were ejected from the Garden of Eden • Anyone: others already born! Gen 5:4 says that Adam “had sons and daughters”; Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown say that Sa`ve was her name • The way of Cain, then is a lack of faith which shows itself in envy of God’s dealings with the righteous in murderous acts, in denial of responsibility and in refusal to accept God’s punishment. (Jodell)

15 And the LORD said to him, "Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him. • Grace and testimony

The Family of Cain 16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. • Nod means “flight, unrest”!

17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son -- Enoch. • Knew: no law existed against incest yet until Lev 18:9 “The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere, their nakedness you shall not uncover.” • Adam and Eve were created perfect. Their genetic structure was also perfect. Mutations and defects in gene sequencing had begun with them. • Inter-marriage, at that time, would not give rise to the defects that are common today. When the gene pool had become corrupted, God then forbid inner-marriage to protect man from excessive defects and mutations derived from corrupt recessive genes. • “An important aspect of the creationist model is often overlooked, but it is essential for a proper understanding of the issues. This aspect is the deterioration of a once-perfect creation. Creationists believe this because the Bible states that the world was created perfect (Gen. 1:31), and that death and deterioration came into the world because the first human couple sinned (Gen. 3:19, Rom. 5:12, 8:20-22, 1 Cor. 15:21-22, 26). As the previous chapter showed, all scientists interpret facts according to their assumptions. From this premise of perfection followed by deterioration, it follows that mutations, as

would be expected from copying errors, destroyed some of the original genetic information. (Sarfati) • Built a city: in defiance of God’s curse! • Enoch means initiating or beginning yet without God! Developed by ungodly men and pursued independent of God! • Note this is the foundation of Humanism = recorded are the details of a Godless society!

18 To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech. • Irad means townsman; ornament of a city • Mehujael means destroyed or smitten of God • Methushael: man of God or God gives life

19 Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. • Lamech means strong, powerful man • Lamech altered God’s plan by taking two wives instead of one • Adah means beauty • Zillah means shaded, sanding, shadow • Wives were increased to gratify his lust and flesh (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown)

20 And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. • Jabal: means flowing or stream of water

21 His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. • Just like the heathen later. All the elements of “culture” music, commerce, art, metal work. • The Greeks and Romans had the same things (art/culture) and were also devoid of the true God! • Art and culture apart from the true God only celebrate man’s hopelessness.

22 And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah. • Tubal-Cain means earth smith • Instructor: already existing technology! No stone age here! Turn to the section on Genesis chapter 8 to see metal objects found in lumps of ! • Words used imply he used cutting instruments • Naamah means pleasant, graceful,

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 38 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

23 Then Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." • Lamech this ditty is known as Lamech’s sword song • Lamech’s poem is the earliest piece of poetry. It breathes a spirit of boastful defiance, of trust in his own strength, of violence and of murder (Alfred Edersheim) • Lamech’s poem may refer to a transaction in which Lamech (perhaps in self- defiance) had killed a young man, and claims protection of himself. (Irwin) • There may be an allusion to the inventions of Tubal-Cain. He now has weapons with which he means to defend himself, and vaunts these as far more effectual than the threatening of God. (Irwin) • It only mentions an acknowledgment of God from which Lamech predicts his own safety • All will die in the flood in this godless society with all of its art nd • At the 2 coming of Jesus of Nazareth so too will all the godless, yet cultured, perish…how tragic!

A New Son 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed." • Seth means appointed compensation • Seed, notice it is of the woman, Gen 3:15 this is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth

26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD. • Enosh means frail, weak, mortal • Call on the name…to proclaim

Genesis 5

The Family of Adam (1 Chron 1:1-4; Luke 3:36-38) 1 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. • Book: the first use of the word book • A record of fifteen centuries of human history • Made in the likeness of God: no sin!

2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created.

3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. • In his own likeness: fallen, sinful likeness

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 40 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. • Seth becomes the spiritual firstborn (Irwin)

5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died. • Adam died and joined Abel in Sheol • Having already died spiritually, Adam now dies bodily, yet his soul continues in Sheol. • Where will your soul go when you die bodily? • Gen 3:4 “Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.” • And he died…Just as God said!

6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh.

7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. • Enosh means Frail, weak, mortal

8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died. • And he died!

9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan. • Cainan means possessor or smith • What talent did he have?

10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters.

11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died. • And he died!

12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. • Mahalalel: praise of God or God be praised

13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters.

14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died. • And he died!

15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. • Jared: descent

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 41 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters.

17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died. • And he died!

18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. • Enoch: initiating, beginning, dedication

19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters.

20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died. • And he died!

21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. • Adam is still alive at this time! (see the timeline included with these notes) • Methuselah: he shall send his death (or when he dies it shall come)

22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. • Walked with God: denoting close intimacy • Even is the midst of growing ungodliness Enoch walks with God! • Heb 11:5 “By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” • Jude 14 & 15 “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him."” Speaking prophetically of the 2nd coming of Jesus!

23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. • Seventh from Adam like Lamech – did Adam keep touch only with this line and not Cain’s?

24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. • Enoch didn’t cop out and say “Everybody else is doing it.” • Only Adam has died (aside from Abel, Eve and whomever Lamech killed if he really killed a man) at this point, 57 years before. Enoch was 308 when Adam died! • He was not: not on earth • God took him: took him alive a preview to the rapture (see 1 Thess 4:13)

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 42 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. • Lamech: strong, powerful man • Methuselah means When he dies it shall come

26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters.

27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died. • Methuselah was alive when Noah was alive • Oldest man dies at 969 • How do we explain the longevity of these men? Advocates of the canopy theory suggest that this antediluvian canopy arrested life-shortening solar rays.

28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son.

29 And he called his name Noah, saying, "This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed." • Noah means to rest; to lie down

30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters.

31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died. • Lamech dies before Methuselah

32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth. • 1556 years after creation • Did Noah have other children?

So, what about “missing Links”?

• “The genetic information in the DNA cannot be translated except with many different enzymes, which are themselves encoded. So the code cannot be translated except via products of translation, a vicious circle that ties evolutionary origin-of-life theories in knots. These include double-sieve enzymes to make sure the right amino acid is linked to the right tRNA. One sieve rejects amino acids too large, while the other rejects those too small. (Osamu Nureki) • “The genetic code that’s almost universal to life on Earth is about the best possible, for protecting against errors.” (Knight) • DNA is the most complicated molecule in the universe! • The probability of one DNA molecule arranging itself by chance has been calculated to be 1 chance in 10 to the 119,000th power! (Hovind)

• “The genetic code also has vital editing machinery that is itself encoded in the DNA. This shows that the system was fully functional from the beginning – another vicious cycle for the evolutionists.” (Sarfati) • “Yet another vicious cycle, and there are many more, is that the enzymes that make amino acid histidine themselves contain histidine. (Sarfati) • In other words, you either have DNA or you do not. Its complexity cannot be reduced, it has to be all there from the beginning to function properly!

Genesis 6

The Wickedness and Judgment of Man 1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, • Multiply: Morris says possibly 7 billion in population, remember there was a longer lifespan and probably longer time of fertility • 1656 the flood came! • Prophets spoke of the flood: o Isaiah 54:9 "For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; For as I have sworn That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, So have I sworn That I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.” • Jesus confirmed the flood: o Matthew 24:37-39 “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” o Luke 17:26-27 “And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.” • Apostles mentioned the flood: o 1 Peter 3:20 “who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.” o 2 Peter 2:5-3:6; 2 Peter 2:5 “and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;”

2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. • Sons of God: “bene elohim”; Septuagint (LXX) Greek translation of the Hebrew translated it the angels of God (Morris); • Phrase used in the O.T. almost exclusively of angels (Ryrie) see (Job 1:6; 2:1, 38:7) • A strange and terrible event took place, rapidly leading to such a tidal wave of violence and wickedness over the Earth there was no other remedy but utter destruction (Morris) • Also Jude 6 “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around

them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. NKJV • Took: (implying a sexual union): Shechem took Dinah - Gen 34:2 “And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.” • May not be marital unions for the translation wives is “ishah”, women

3 And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." • Spirit: God’s Holy Spirit in His ministry of convicting the World (Morris). See John 16:8 • Strive: they rejected His witness! • 1536 years from the creation this pronunciation was made by God

4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. 5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. • Wickedness: a world of lust & cruelty like today! • In the earth: external, unrestrained wickedness in their society • Heart: internal, unrestrained wickedness in their thoughts and fantasies • Only evil continually: wow sounds like the TV and movies today!

6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. • God is not a man that He should repent – 1 Sam 15:11, 29 “’I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments.’ And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night.”, “And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man that He should relent." • It pained in His heart!

• Eph 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

7 So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them."

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. • Grace: first time grace is used in the Bible

Noah Pleases God 9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. • Shem means renown name • Ham means warm, hot • Japheth means enlarged, beautiful

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. • Gee, just like today!

12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. • Corrupt: to signify destroyed or corrupted by putridity (Jamieson-Fausset- Brown)

The Ark Prepared (Heb 11:7; 1 Peter 3:20) 13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. • God said to Noah…how? A vision? What a burden! • Violence: a world of lust & cruelty! • Destroy them in the justice demanded by God’s holiness • Rev 6:10 “And they cried with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. • Make yourself: no subcontractors? • Pitch: Moses’ basket - Exo 2:3 “But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river's bank.”

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 51 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Gopherwood: probably cypress or cedar; hard wood (Ryrie) • Pitch…probably a Bitumen or a rosin

15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred , its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. • : 18 ( for 24) inches making the ark 450 (600) feet long, 75 (100) feet broad/ wide, and 45 (60) feet high (Ryrie) • The ark’s carrying capacity equaled that of 522 standard railroad stock cars (each of which can hold 240 sheep). (Ryrie)

Photos courtesy “Refuting Evolution” by

• Only 188 cars would be required to hold 45,000 sheep-sized animals, leaving 312 cars for food, Noah’s family and “range” for the animals. (Ryrie) • Today it is estimated that there are 17,600 species of animals, making 45,000 (to accommodate for extinct animals) a likely approximation of the number Noah might have taken into the ark (Ryrie) • Not designed for navigation; no masts, rudders or sails • It is a floating chest, very stable for harsh conditions

18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark -- you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. • Covenant: the first mention of covenant in the Bible • Before Noah built the ark he know who would go and who would not! • You (Noah):A preacher of rightousness (2 Pet 2:5) with no converts! Yet the human race carried on through Noah’s obedience!

19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.

21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them."

22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did. • A testimony of Noah’s faith

Genesis 7

The Great Flood (Luke 17:26,27) 1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. • God is in the ark!

2 You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; • Clean and unclean animals nearly 2,300 years before the law

3 also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth.

4 For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made." • Rain: Had never happened thus far thanks to a canopy of water above the sky • All living things: What a burden!

5 And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him. • Testimony • You are here today because of Noah’s faithfulness. • Your faithfulness to God will touch lives in ways you will never know until heaven.

6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. • 1656 years after creation • The earth has reached a point of no return because of man’s corruption!

7 So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. • Tradition says his Wife’s name was “Tamar” (Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown)

8 Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth,

9 two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. • Gen 6:19 • There was one door so they had to keep going further in • There is only one door to be saved from God’s judgment again, and it is Jesus of Nazareth John 10:9-10 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. • Fountains of the great deep: (Gen 1:6) subterranean waters, as well as rain, contributed to the Flood (Ryrie). • Note! Animals and Humans would seek higher ground until it was covered. • The most mobile would generally survive the longest, drown last and be buried nearest to the top of the sedimentary layers. • The more “simple” and less mobile are buried first. • The geologic column exists only in the text books! (Hovind) what we observe in the earth is many times all different “ages” of fossils are all mixed together…best answered by a flood.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 57 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Evolutionists date fossils by the layer of strata it is located in, and they date the strata by the fossils that in the layer. That is circular reasoning or a tautology…bad science and terrible logic!

• The two waters are rejoined from Genesis 1:6 that had been divided at creation. • The windows of heaven opened and changed the climate forever. • The language is highly figurative intended to convey a vivid idea of the awful inundation from two opposite sources – subterranean and atmospheric (Morris) see frozen pictures about a page further down • Great deep: unfathomable mass (Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown) • Windows of Heaven opened releasing highly destructive power

12 And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.

• Rain: torrential rain for 960 hours! At only one inch per hour = 8 feet of rain

• Gen 2:5,6 tell us before this there was no rain! • Matt 24:36-41 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left.

• 2 Pet 3:7 “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”

13 On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark –

14 they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. • Kind: sort or species (Gen 1:12) • Sort: wing, feather, utmost part, sort

15 And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. • What a picture! • What did the scoffers of Noah think?

16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the LORD shut him in. • Noah is unable to open or allow any other to enter! • So too the rapture is a one time event that can be missed by those who are not truly in the faith, saved by faith in Jesus Christ.

17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. • Outside? • What did the people outside do?

18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters.

• Tidal waves from the fountains of the great deep being broken up would suddenly trap its victims in a wall of water, burying them in an instant. th • December 26 2004, some 270,000 people perished in minutes as a series of Tsunami’s radiated out from one earth quake! • This wave action and flood is responsible for the many fossils on the Earth today.

19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. • Changing the earth’s surface drastically

20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. • About the draw of the ark 15 cubits is about 22.5 feet • Covered is “Kasah” in the Hebrew it means “overwhelmed” • The top 3,000 feet of Mt. Everest has seashells on it. How did they get all the way up there?

21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man.

22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died. • As God promised they would to Noah in chapter 6

23 So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. • There are over 270 flood stories from all parts of the world. • Almost all peoples have a tradition and a deluge (Alfred Edersheim) • Even isolated tribes in the Amazon! (Irwin)

24 And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days. • The waters reached their highest point after 150 days (which period included the 40 days of constant rain) • Thus was the end of a world of lust and cruelty!

• 2 Pet 3:3 “knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts” • There is another judgment coming from God on the world! Once again man’s lust and cruelty are calling for God’s judgment.

Genesis 8

Noah's Deliverance 1 Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. • Remembered: used in the scripture as an act of memory conveying the return of care and kindness after a delay or suspension – there is a renewal of God’s favor (began to act again on their behalf) o Samson: Judges 16:28 “Then Samson called to the LORD, saying, "O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!"” o Hannah: 1 Sam 1:11 “Then she made a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head."” o Thief: Luke 23:42 “Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."” • Wind: there is a whole new climate! • Wind and differing temperate regions will cause storms!

2 The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.

3 And the waters receded continually from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters decreased. • Ps 104:6-9 “You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. They went up over the mountains; They went down into the valleys, To the place which You founded for them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, That they may not return to cover the earth.”

4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. • Five months later (Gen 7:11) • Rested: a calm and gentle motion

5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen. • 73 days later (Gen 8:4)

6 So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made. • 113 days later (Gen 8:4)

7 Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth. • Found food from floating carcasses? • Rest on floating logs and debris

8 He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground.

9 But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her, and drew her into the ark to himself. • Whole earth: it was a global flood

10 And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark. • 120 days later (Gen 8:4)

11 Then the dove came to him in the evening, and behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; and Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth. • Bearing indirect testimony to this narrative, the olive tree has been ascertained to bear leaves underwater (Alfred Edersheim) • Theophrastus and Pliny mentions olive trees in the Red Sea (Jamieson- Fausset-Brown)

12 So he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore. • 127 days later (Gen 8:4)

13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and indeed the surface of the ground was dry. • Covering: a part of roof used for observation?

14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried. • Noah and his family were in the ark 371 days (Ryrie/Morris) [377 days according to the Bible Knowledge Commentary]

15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, • 1 year 40 days later

16 "Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you. • Noah waits for God’s timing and instructions

17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you: birds and cattle and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth."

18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him. • Noah stepped in forth as the sole possessor of the earth (G. Campbell Morgan)

19 Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, and whatever creeps on the earth, according to their families, went out of the ark.

God's Covenant with Creation 20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. • Many unknowns lay before Noah but he begins with worship! • Built: first time building an altar is mentioned • Of every clean animal…: worship was to take the form of giving God some of the best of what was His; A return to Abel’s worship! • Consecrating the earth to God

21 And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. • What did Noah pray for? • Soothing aroma means it was satisfying; God accepted it • Curse the ground by a flood to destroy man • Man’s heart is evil: man is helpless to save himself; he needs a savior, Jesus

22 "While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease." • Cold, heat, winter and summer were all new to Noah • Jews, Hindus, Arabians all reckoned 6 seasons

Genesis 9

God's Promise to Noah 1 So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. • God blessed Adam in Gen 1:28-29 • See the land bridges pictures in chapter 10’s notes. That is how the animals and people were able to migrate around the earth, not by plate tectonics and Panagea! • When these land bridges where cut off by the melting ice caps, it would isolate gene pools and give rise to recessive traits bringing forth what we call races of people.

2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. • Then dominion of the animals for Adam (Gen 1:26, 28), now fear of humans by animals for Noah • Man’s dominion is now one of force and no longer of submission • So how did the animals and people interact before the flood? • No cattle mentioned (Gen 7:21 = domesticated animals)

3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. • Food: Animals are now allowed by God to be eaten • Were animals “illegally” taken to be food before the flood? • Directions for diet are given as in Genesis 1:29

4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. • Prohibition like Adam

5 Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man's brother I will require the life of man. • Demand is a Judicial term • Where does this verse leave all those doctors who kill babies in the womb?

6 "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man. • Sheds: pours out • By man: government; man now is to judge on God’s behalf to prevent anarchy from happening again • Value of life – it’s sacred to God, so it should be sacred to us!

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 69 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Man’s life was even more sacred than the animals – because he was made in the image of God. Though animals shared the possession of a soul and body with man, it was only man who had an eternal spirit, the image of God (Morris). • Ex 21:12-14 “He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. However, if he did not lie in wait, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee. But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbor, to kill him by treachery, you shall take him from My altar, that he may die.” • Acts 25:11 “For if I am an offender, or have committed anything deserving of death, I do not object to dying; but if there is nothing in these things of which these men accuse me, no one can deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar." • Num 35:33 “So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.” • Matt 26:52 “But Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.’”

7 And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; Bring forth abundantly in the earth And multiply in it."

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: • Spoke how? • Did He appear to them?

9 "And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, • Covenant: now cosmic and universal (Bible Knowledge Commentary) • A solemn promise of as binding a nature as a covenant (Jamieson-Fausset- Brown) • The second mention of a of covenant. Gen 6:18 is the first

10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. • Matt 10:29 “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will.”

Thousands of layers formed in a few minutes as the mud flowed down from Mt. St. Helens.

Photos courtesy www.drdino.com

Gee, if these layers are millions of years old, where is the erosion that should have occurred between them? How could the sediments be deposited and then carved out over millions of years and not erode in between each layer?

You get layers like these in temporary retention basins on construction sites. (So says Andy Davis of Davis Paving and Construction). Go find a construction site and verify it for yourself!

11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." • Had the flood been a local flood only as some suppose, this promise would then make God a liar! It had to be a global flood.

12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. • Set: or “I appoint” • Rev 4:3 “And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.” • Both man and God look on a rainbow when it occurs. Men from earth and God from heaven.

14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;

15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth."

17 And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Noah and His Sons 18 Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan. • Shem means renown name; splendor • Ham means warm burning heat • Japheth means enlargement • The whole world populated from them and their wives

19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated. • Statistics show the population of the world today is approximately 5.6 billion • In 1800 A.D. about 1 billion, • At the time of Jesus 250 million people • and going back approximately 4,400 years it gets down to the beginning (Noah, his sons and their wives

20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.

21 Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent. • Noah let down his guard got into sin and ended up naked like Adam! Sort of like the clubbing/bar scene today • Except for the forbidden fruit itself, non has brought more sin, ruin & desolation upon our earth (Alfred Edersheim) • Intoxication and sexual looseness are hallmarks of pagans! o Prov 20:1 “Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” o Habakkuk 2:15 “Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor, Pressing him to your bottle, Even to make him drunk, That you may look on his nakedness!” • Sin is no respecter of age!

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. • Ham, himself degraded, yielded to curiosity (G. Campbell Morgan) • Told: literally “told with delight”

23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father's nakedness.

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 76 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• Shem and Japheth, ashamed of the sin of their father attempted to hide him (G. Campbell Morgan) • Outer mantle, also used for wrapping a person at night • Their action silently rebukes Ham’s

24 So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.

25 Then he said: "Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brethren." • Canaan was old enough for the bent of his character to be known to Noah (Morris) • Man in the grip of evil is doomed to slavery (G. Campbell Morgan) • Ham is punished for his dishonor to his father by having a son who would bring dishonor to him (Ryrie)

26 And he said: "Blessed be the LORD, The God of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant. • God: Jehovah • Man influenced by purity and love proceed to government and blessing (G. Campbell Morgan) • Yahweh will be Shem’s God and Shem’s blessing. (Jews are of Semitic – from “Shem” – descent.) (Ryrie) • God’s warning about the Canaanites (Lev 18:3-30)

27 May God enlarge Japheth, And may he dwell in the tents of Shem; And may Canaan be his servant." • God: Elohim 28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.

Genesis 10

Nations Descended from Noah (1 Chron 1:5-27) • Table of nations listing 70 descendents of Noah by historical importance (Alfred Edersheim) • Not showing necessarily ancestry, instead it shows political, geographical, and ethnic affiliations among tribes. Note the years of the patriarch’s, before and after their son’s birth, nor the duration of their life, is noticed showing that the lists in this chapter are given on a different principle, and with a different purpose from that in the previous chapters (Bible Knowledge Commentary) [a] • Acts 17:26 “And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,”

© 2005Calvary Chapel Chester Springs 77 www.cc-chestersprings.com Genesis Creation Seminar

• God has determined the bounds of their habitation • If there are no gaps in the genealogies of Genesis 11, Noah continued living until Abraham was about 58 years old! (Morris)

1 Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.

2 The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. • Europe to Japheth (Alfred Edersheim) • 14 sons • Gomer: vanishing heart/passion

3 The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

4 The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

5 From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations. • Hebrew phrase – all countries accessible by sea

6 The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. • Africa to Ham (Alfred Edersheim) • 30 sons

7 The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.

8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. • Did Cush train him to defy Noah curse? (Morris) • Nimrod: the founder of the Babylonian monarchy

9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD." • Was he a giant like the men in the Pre-flood times? • Whatever he was he became Significant

10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. • Nimrod is the first dictator? • Did he conquer Babel or build it? • Dan 1:2 “And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the articles of the house of God, which he carried into the land of

Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god.” • Tradition has identified him with tyrannical power “to Rebel” in the Hebrew, “to pursue in the chase in the Septuagint (LXX Greek translation of the Hebrew) using and Assyrian root word. • Nimrod and his wife start false mother/ child religion detailed in ’s book “The Two Babylon’s”

11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, • The violent intrusion of Hamite power into Shemetic territory

12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).

13 Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,

14 Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim).

15 Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth; • A lot of sons! • Heth, the children of: Abraham bought Sarah’s burial plot from them (Gen 23:3)

16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite;

17 the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; • Sino (Chinese?) (Morris)

18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed. • Dispersed: spread abroad

19 And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

20 These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.

21 And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder. • Asia to Shem (Alfred Edersheim) • 26 sons • Shem means renown name; spendor • Father: the ancestor of • Eber: from which cam the “Hebrew” (Morris)

23 The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.

24 Arphaxad begot Salah, and Salah begot Eber.

25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. • Eber was a contemporary to Nimrod • Peleg: 5 generations after the flood; about 100 years after the flood (Jamieson- Fausset-Brown)

• Gen 9:1 “So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth” They are disobeying God’s command.

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. • How? In a cloud of fire? • Not that He was out of the loop and needed to see for Himself. • God interrupted human history and everything changed!

6 And the LORD said, "Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. • Bad! Setting a course for rebellion

7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." • Did He appear to them? • Us: a counsel within the Godhead. God held a similar counsel in Genesis 1:26

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. • Because of disobedience • Israel has also been scattered for her disobedience to God

• God intervenes into human history • Was the Tower finished?

9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. • Balal means mingle or mix • Satan uses confusion – mystery Babylon too Revelation 17! • Well, they did make a name for themselves after all.

Shem's Descendants (1 Chron 1:17-27; Luke 3:34-36) 10 This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood. • 2 years after the flood would be 1658 years from creation • Noah 500; Japheth 100 years before flood; Ham 94 years before the flood • Shem was born 97 years before the flood

11 After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. • Shem lived a total of 602 years

12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah.

• Luke 3:35 “the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah”

13 After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters. • Arphaxad lived a total of 438 years

14 Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

15 After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters. • Salah lived a total of 433 years

16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg. • Age is declining • Resultant from being scattered into isolated people groups? • Gene pool shrinks, in that inbreeding is giving rise to recessive or mutated pairs of genes, normally passed over in a larger gene pool?

17 After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

• Peleg: division • Eber lived 464 years

18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. • +131 years after the flood

• Terah means delay

25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters. • Nahor lived 148 years total

26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. • +292 years after the flood • Terah was 128 years old when Noah died! • Abram means exalted father; father of elevation or father of a great number (Abraham); • He is mentioned 312 times in 272 verses = one of the most famous of the Old Testament • Abram was the youngest (Alfred Edersheim)

Terah's Descendants 27 This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. • Joshua 24:2-3 “And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel: "Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other . Then I took your father Abraham from the other side of the River, led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.”

28 And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. • Before: literally in the face of his father

29 Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. • Sarai: contentions; daughter of Terah by another wife • Gen 20:12 “But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.” • Milcah means counsel; niece • Iscah means God is looking; Some say this was Lot’s wife. (Jamieson- Fausset-Brown)

30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child. • So you call these two to start a nation? Hmm.

31 And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. • Took – Acts 7:4 “Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.” • Haran means parched, barren • To go to the land of Canaan: Abram would get sidetracked in Haran

32 So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran. • Terah means delay; wandering • 130 years old when Haran born • Terah lived 205 years total
