TRABAJO DE FINAL DE GRADO EN TRADUCCIÓN E INTERPRETACIÓN TREBALL DE FI DE GRAU EN TRADUCCIÓ I INTERPRETACIÓ Departament de Traducció i Comunicació TITLE The Influence of Humour and Cultural References in the Dubbing of the Series Fawlty Towers into both Spanish and Catalan. Author: Sophie Ann Marshall Tutor: Alfred Markey Fecha de lectura/ Data de lectura: June 2018 Abstract: Translating humour and cultural references from one language to another can create some of translations greatest challenges in the digital era we live in. These together with multilingual situations, henceforth referred to as multilingualism, can sometimes make the audiovisual translator’s job a difficult one. This dissertation aims to address these issues of contemporary relevance in the 1975 series Fawlty Towers (John Cleese and Connie Booth), translated into both Spanish and Catalan years later. In this British sitcom, the main characters attempt to run a fictional hotel with the help of Manuel, played by Andrew Sachs, an English-challenged Spanish waiter who swaps between languages throughout both series, trying to make sense of strange and challenging situations. We will firstly take a step back and offer a theoretical reflection about the main problems encountered in audiovisual translation. We will then analyse the similarities and differences encountered between the translations, and create a table to classify said findings from the information obtained in the three chosen episodes (“Basil the Rat”, “The Builders” and “The Anniversary”). The analysis of the dubbing into both Spanish and Catalan will help us present a classification of the humour and multilingualism, and reflect on the techniques chosen as to resolve the problems at hand.

  • “Little Englander” – Fawlty Towers a Textual Analysis of Nationalistic Ideology
Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, Vol 1, No 2 (2007) ARTICLE “Little Englander” – Fawlty Towers A Textual Analysis of Nationalistic Ideology MATTHEW BARTLEY, University of Sunderland ABSTRACT It is often agreed upon that television texts have provided an image of ‘Britishness’ that constructs an image of the nation state. This in turn leads to the representation of community in British sitcoms where one example is Fawlty Towers. Here we have a small community as a mini-construction of Britain complete with its ‘strengths’ and ‘traditions’. This paper then, will elaborate through the analysis of narrative developments, thematic concerns and visual and linguistic analysis of the characters, just how Fawlty Towers showed this notion put into practice. Considering what is considered the essence of ‘Britain’ in a textual example of a sitcom, it investigates how this ideological notion is applied within the textual narrative. This includes which characters are deemed worthy of inclusion in this mini-Britain, and which are not, and which ideological beliefs inform the notion of ‘Britishness’. KEYWORDS Textual analysis, thematic, narrative, visuals. Research has shown that when studying communities, one aspect that is of paramount importance to their formation is that of difference, or rather the acceptance of difference (Bauman, 2004; Lacey, 1998; Pickering, 2001; Tueth, 2000; and Tyler, 2005). Historically, communities have been formed around workplaces, uniting its denizens under a common banner despite the fact that their chosen occupation may be the only thing that the communal inhabitants share with each other. Difference is not anathema to the conception and construction of a community as long as the difference is integrated into the structure of the community.

  • The Complexities of Farce
The Complexities of Farce (With a Case Study on Fawlty Towers) Dario Dalla Costa BA(Hons), DipEd This Thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Arts of the University of Western Australia, School of Social and Cultural Studies, Discipline of English, Communication and Cultural Studies, 2004. Abstract This thesis will counter the argument that farce is a simplistic dramatic form low in the theatrical hierarchy and demonstrate that it is both complex and multifaceted. It will be shown to have a long history and to have influenced many different dramatic forms. The thesis is in two sections. The first will explore farce in general, and the second will use the sitcom Fawlty Towers as a case study in order to explore the televisual mode and its relevance to the contemporary context. The question “What is farce?” will be answered in detail, thus developing an unambiguous perception of the genre which will form a contextual basis for the rest of the thesis. Recurring themes will be used to link chapters together and certain issues raised in early chapters will be expanded upon in later ones. A key aspect to be taken into consideration is the importance the physical plays in farce. Thus, my focus will be specifically on performance texts, and not limit itself to the “literary” texts. The theatrical hierarchy will be addressed directly, exploring why and how the genre has been delegated to the lowest rung of the hierarchical ladder. Such a classification will be destabilised and shown to be unfounded because it is based on such assumptions as tragedy being the “best” genre because it is tragedy, and farce the worst because it is farce.
