NOTES FROM RANDY STEINER, IBCC Vol u me , Is s ue PRESIDENT…. September 2018 Summer is wrapping up fast, the temperature has made a change, and it feels cool enough to get Inside this issue: outside and get more done.

Weather is looking like it will be wonderful for the Southwest Idaho All British Field Meet. I am President’s Notes 1 looking forward to attending again this year. Maybe, just maybe, I can make some more progress on the TD to get it there (low chance, but I have a trailer now). Rick and his team have done a great job IBCC Board Members 2 again this year and he is tracking to get 100 cars and bikes there. Really looking forward to the new Upcoming Events 3 layout this year too. I was thinking about what to touch on this month and I was reflecting on the marques we have in the Ladies 2nd IBCC Tea 4 club. One that seems to be under represented is Lotus. I have always enjoyed the cars which Brit Car Events 4 appeared in the Bond films over the years, but there is one which really caught my eye, and I had no idea what it was until years later and a little digging. This is before I caught the disease for British Directory Picture Re- 5 cars. quest Many of you may recall The Prisoner, from 1967 in Canada and the UK and 1968 in the US. If you New Members 5 have not seen it, it should be available on some of the streaming sites, but we could do a watch party as I have them on DVD. It is only 17 episodes, but what a ride. It is very bizarre but fun show. The Volunteer of the Month 5 sphere ……. Eagle Car Show— 6 Anyway, the opening sequence has the main character driving up in a Lotus Super 7. I had no idea Stanley Lee what that car was, but I instantly fell in love with it as the looks of the car really strike a cord. The Super 7 started production in 1957 and was designed by Lotus founder Colin Chapman. He kept with ATDI in Salem 7-8 Lotus’ philosophy of lightweight construction and simplicity resulting in a high performance vehicle. Befuddlement Column 8 Lotus ended production in 1972, but Caterham (kate – ram not kater - ham) purchased the rights and Late Aug. Coddiwomple 9 the car is still in production today, with many different variants available. Notably you can get it in kit form and assemble it yourself. did an episode where the boys needed to assemble a car Dick Johnson’s Award 10 before The Stig was able to drive to the factory from the southern part of the UK. Even in 1958 you could get the car in component form for around 399 pounds, 100 pounds for the Ford motor and gear Mr. Bean’s Tech Talk — 11-12 box, and 27 pounds for the read axle to avoid a certain kind of government tax of the time. Wiring Your MG The car is a tubular steel frame construction with aluminum skin over the outside. In 1957 – 1960, it Coffee Happenings 12 was powered with a 1.2 liter engine, in 1961 – 1967, a 1.3 liter motor, 1968 – 1973 around a 1.6 liter. This is in a car which weighs 500 kg, or about 1100 pounds. Four good strong people could probably Member’s Corner 13 pick the whole car up. SWAIBFM Registration 13-16 This is a car I will likely have to crawl in and out of. At a total of 3 feet off the road, it is very low to Classified Ads 17 the ground and has impressive cornering ability. It is a little biased weight wise to the front, but has close to a 50/50 balance. The main issue is at higher speeds the nose will become light without having updates to the aerodynamics, anything above 70 mph could get dicey. Eve nts : The part I really like about all of this is the fact if you really want to, and I really want to, you can scratch build a car like it. These are known and locosts (low cost) sports cars and have the same look Saturday, Sept. 1, 9:30, and design as the Super 7. With a donor car and much fabrication, you too can have a Super 7 type Coffee at Caffé Capri car. Well, it’s on the list anyway, kind of like the boat I want to build like Brian’s. One day …. I hope to see some more Lotus cars in the group, I know I would like to get one some day, either Saturday, Sept. 15 18, through purchase or build. I know there is a Lotus model Suzie won’t let me get as she just does not 8:00, Breakfast at Eddie’s like the looks of it, but she could go for any of the ones which were in the Bond films. Saturday, Sept. 15, 9:30, If you made it this far, huzzah! We have our 20th summer tour coming up in 2022. The first summer Coffee at Awakenings Coffee tour was in 2002 to Union, OR. I am sure it is hard to believe the 20 year anniversary is coming up that fast. What I would like to hear from the club is are any ideas you may have to celebrate for that Saturday, Sept. 22, 1:00, summer tour. Would a single site location be preferred, a multi site driving tour between several of IBCC Ladies Tea the locations we have been to before? The Board would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. We Wednesday, Sept. 26, 6:30, also would like ideas for where you might like to go for 2020. Wednesday Night Drive 2020……….. Saturday, Sept. 29 Odd Saturday Out S P O K E ‘n’ W O R D Page 2

ALL TRIUMPH DRIVE IN SALEM, OREGON AUGUST 10-12, 2018 IBCC was well represented at the PTOA All Triumph Drive-In at Salem, Or. Those attending from Idaho were Rick Mills, Terry Shannon, Peter Van- Dorne, Cheri Ross, Rod Nichols, Becky Nichols. Other IBCC members (from Oregon & Washington) were Sam Bass, Linda Allen, Dennis & Bonnie Baxter, Mike & Anne Crane, Dean & Joyce Himes, Brian & Donna Moore, Mike & Susan Rego, and Gary & Judy Wilson. Friday nights welcome reception was held at the Salem Riverfront Carou- sel Park. Paul Mitchell (event coordina- tor) brought out the little kid in everyone as we rode the carousel horses over and over again. What a fun time! Saturday morning was the car show. It was held at Salem’s Riverfront Park on the Willamette River adja- cent to the Carousel Park. It was a beautiful morning for a car show until about 11:30 am when the storm clouds moved in and by noon there was a fairly good amount of liquid sunshine falling. It always amazes me how fast those bonnets come down and tops go up on those little British cars. It was time for our boxed lunches to arrive and by the time we were done eating, the rain had let up. . After the car show there were two tours available to go on. One was a wine tour and the other a farmland tour.

Saturday evening was the awards banquet. Several of the IBCC members took home tro- phies. The two most notable awards were the “President’s Award” and the “People’s Choice Award”. Those trophies were awarded to Sam Bass (President’s Award) and Terry Shannon (People’s Choice Award). CONGRATULA- TIONS, GUYS!! S P O K E ‘n’ W O R D Page 8

BEFUDDLEMENT COLUMN????? Question?? — What is this tool used for? Answer!! — This is used to remove the metal pin connectors from inside the plastic on an TR7 headlight bulb and headlight actuator circuits. The pin connectors push up into the plastic housing from the back and each connector has two “ears” near the base that keep the pin from backing out of the housing. To push the pin backwards and out of he housing, one must pinch both ears together while pulling the pin connector and wire out of the housing. This tool is supposed to be the solution. It has four hollow tubes of differing diameters and two sets of flat prongs a different distance apart. The theory is that the tube of the correct diameter slides over the male pin connector and compresses the ears so the wire can be pulled out of the hous- ing. The flat prongs do the same for the female pin connectors. (What’s in Your Toolbox—Bruce Hislop)

This is the column for you—-simply send your photo or request to [email protected] for inclusion in next month’s newsletter and ask our wonderful members their opinion/expertise! S P O K E ‘n’ W O R D Page 9 Late August Coddiwomple! Saturday afternoon, the 25th of August, Rick Mills and I made one of those last minute decisions to wander across the valley in search of a sandwich and maybe some kind of cold beverage. Seemed like a good idea to us! Joining the party were Becky and Liz, Bob Huston, and Jim Hahn. Departing from the Starbucks at Eagle and Chinden about 10 AM, Sunday, we dropped down Eagle Road to State Street, then Hwy 17 towards Emmett. Skirting around the east side and north of Emmett, we stayed on the back roads until we got to Hwy 52, which we followed into Payette, then rolled through Fruitland, crossing the border into Ontario, and the down- town Jolts and Juice Company. A little bit pub, a little bit coffee shop, and a whole bunch of tasty stuff, including the beers! Leaving Ontario, we took Alameda Drive, and Arcadia Blvd to Nyssa. We did run across one of the problems of driving back roads through farm country, a very wide piece of farm equipment, I think a swather, which pulled off to let us pass, un- like the Lincoln we caught up with that had “TURTL” personalized plates. Well earned, anyhow. Then we moved on through Apple Valley into Parma and hit Purple Sage Road back to Hwy 16 at Firebird Raceway, and home again, home again from there. The weather was perfect, slightly overcast, 60 to 70 degrees all the time we were driving. Jolts and Juice is owned by IBCC members Todd and Vicki Heinz and hopefully we can head a club event that direction in the near future!

PERSONAL BEST AWARD—DICK JOHNSON

By: Lawana Johnson (a proud and devoted wife)

IBCC member Dick Johnson recently received the national “Personal Best” Award from the CEO of the National Senior Olympic Games. It is presented each year to only around 10 athletes out of the 100,000 athletes in 20 sports that compete across America each year to try to qualify for the National Senior Olympics, which is the largest bi-annual multi -sports event in the world for athletes 50 years and older. This is only the second time the prestigious award has been given to a pickleball-tennis player and the first to an Idahoan in any sport in the 31-year history of the Games.

Even though Dick’s sports success is extraordi- nary, the national “Personal Best” Award "is also about character. It speaks to overcoming challenges in our senior years, staying motivated and healthy, and inspiring Dick Johnson of Boise is presented a Personal Best Award from others by example.” His belief and lifetime devotion National Senior Games Association CEO Marc T. Riker, left, and to God, family, community, and service to others is Mike Thornton, Idaho Senior Games Coordinator. especially noted.

A few highlights of Dick’s life and his sport:

• Dick continues into his 3rd year medaling in all 7 National & World Sr. • Pickleball Championships…A medaling “Grand Slam.” Named All American by the SGA • Pickleball exploding in popularity & the fastest growing sport in North America. Played by many former Olym- pics, NCAA, & Davis Cup players. Televised on CBS Sports. • State Tennis Championships in every decade of his life, except one. • One of few athletes in the world to have played in both tennis & pickleball US Opens • Taught 3 daughters who became State Champions and High School All Americans • Dick gave up academic & tennis scholarships to go on his first two year mission for his church. Then, after the mission, he again gave up a very likely tennis scholarship when he was called to his first Bishopric at a young age 22 . • 3 other missions & humanitarian measles prevention service in Africa. • Many leadership positions in business, government, academics, community, church. • Overcame very severe health & surgeries issues

This article will be about wiring and color codes as it relates to the MG, most MGTs, MGAs, and up through the MGBs. Most of this information comes from many years of experience with these little British cars, having owned several since 1963. I also have to give credit to Barney (the MGA guru) and John Twist for the information they have pro- vided. I hope this information will be helpful should you have any electrical problems on your cars.

I have found that the basic wiring color code used starting with the MGT series was used with some variation up through the MGBs. The MGT was quite a basic car and not much changed with the MGA, however the MGB had several changes so they had to add additional colors for the added equipment. I believe the Magnette also uses this basic color system.

So, let's start with the basic colors. Black-Black is used for ground wires the only exception is the heavy wire coming from the battery, which is the main power to the starter solenoid. After the main power line, the color used to supply power to the systems is Brown. Brown will run from the starter solenoid to the generator control box and to the fuse box. At this point I should tell you, if a wire has two colors (a base color and a stripe) the base color is always listed first then the stripe. Such as brown/blue. Thus, you have a brown/blue wire that feeds power to the ignition switch, and to the lighting switch. You also have a brown/green going to the horns and coming back from the horns to the horns switch it will be brown/black. Remember, black is always ground so the brown/black wire is the return when the horn switch is pushed it then goes to ground. Yellow is your basic charging system wiring. There will be a heavy yellow wire that goes from the generator control box to the armature on the generator and a smaller wire to the ignition warning light. There will also be a yellow/green wire coming from the generator field to the "F" terminal on the control box. White wires are used for the ignition. One goes to the coil, one to the fuel pump, and one to the ignition light. All of these white wires feed off the ignition switch. It also feeds the fuse box from the ignition switch. There are white/purple and white /brown. These wires feed the directional relay that is used on the MGT/ A1500, but not on the MGA 1600. Also of note is the fact that the MGT/A1500 have a directional relay for the turn signals because they use the running lights for the directional lights also. The MGB removed the relay and added a separate brake light and directional lights. Dark Green wires are used to feed the wiper motor, flasher unit, brake light switch, the fuel gauge and the heater switch. Also, the directional indicator switch on the MGT/A1500. Green/red goes from directional relay to left front flasher lamp on the MGT/A1500 or from the directional 15 switch to left side flasher lamps on the 1600. Green/yellow goes to directional indictor switch to the directional relay on MGT/A1500. Green/blue goes to directional indicator switch to the directional relay on the MGT/1500/ Green/white goes from directional relay to right front flasher lamp MGT/A1500 or from the directional switch to right side flasher lamps on the 1600. Green/purple from the stop lamp switch to the stop relay on the MGT/A1500 or from the stop lamp switch to the stop lights on the 1600. Green/brown goes from the heater switch to the heater motor, flasher unit to signal relay MGT/A1500 or to the directional switch on the 1600. Green/black goes from the fuel gauge to the tank sending unit. Light green goes to the flasher unit to flasher warning lamp. Red goes from the lighting switch to front side lamps, tail lights, number plate fog lamp switch, panel lamp rhe- ostat, and map lamp switch and map lamp. Red/yellow fog lamp switch to fog lamp. Red/white goes from the panel lamp switch to panel lamps. Blue is the main power to the dipper switch from the light switch. Blue/red from the dipper switch to low beams headlights. Blue/white from the dipper switch to high beam headlight. Black/green from the screen wiper motor to screen wiper switch. (Continued on next page) S P O K E ‘n’ W O R D Page 12

Also, the early MGB base car used most of the MGA 1600 and MKII coding, but like I said, as the car changed ad- ditional wires were added, so check the wiring diagram for the MGBs.

As an additional note, the early MGT/A1500 cars had rubber coated wires and the color codes were on the cloth braiding around the wire. It might be hard to read the color after so much time and grease/dirt. The later 1500 and 1600 cars have vinyl coated wires and the color code is on the wire. Then the colors were put into a wire bundle made with cloth braiding. The MGBs have vinyl wire with a plastic wrap, blue or sometimes gray. Remember when working on the wiring, don’t forget to disconnect the battery so you don’t let the smoke out!

August Coffee & Drive Happenings….

30 cars came to the coffee on Aug. 18. The smoke wasn’t as bad and the weather was great for driving!! Here’s hoping for cooler, less smoky driving in the month of September!! S P O K E ‘n’ W O R D Page 13 Southwest Idaho All British Field Meet 2018 SWIABFM 2018 is just around the corner! On Saturday, September 15th, we have the show up in McCall at the Depot Park. This is the same park where we held the 2011 and 2012 Summer Tours. The park is situated just off the lake and downtown McCall, you can’t ask for a better place to hold a show in this classic mountain resort town. At the time of this writing, we have 46 cars registered for the show and there is room for more cars. Also, we are adding a People’s Choice Award for the McCall show. We have partnered with the City of McCall Parks and Recreation to help fund their “Youth Recreation Scholarship Fund.” Representatives will sell voting tickets at the show for donations. These tickets will be used by the public to vote for their best car. On Sunday, September 16th, we are at The Village at Meridian for our third show at this venue. To say that we had two good shows at the Village would be an understatement. Just asked those who attended! Speaking of those who attended the last two shows, we still have some who have not signed up for this year’s show! No worries, there is still time and still room. Last year we had 75 cars and motorcycles and to date we are at 85! Last year we had 12 cars from out of state. This year, we have over 30 coming! We do have a healthy mix of cars but there are some that aren’t represented or very few. If you have any of these cars, we sure would like to see you in the show; Mini Cooper, Triumph TR4, Land Rover, Bentley or anything you have and would like to show! MEMBERs’ CoRnER Hello fellow IBCC and LBC fans! In January 2018 my wife and I bought our Austin Healey Sprite. We immediately came to our first IBCC meeting and joined—eager to see what the club was all about. Since that time, we have had a lot of fun getting to know some of you and participating as much as we can in club events. Thank you all for making the club such a blast. In the March newsletter, I shared a little of how we found the IBCC and how it came about that after some serious internet searching we found our car. I'm still kind of in awe of how great it is to be behind the wheel of a car that's almost 60 years old and having so much fun in it. Jennifer and I get a kick at how it seems to draw a crowd of onlookers who are al- ways curious about the year, make, and model and just in general how cool the car looks. And of course, every time I drive this car, I am building new memories for the future and still fondly remembering my 1967 3000 Mk III that I drove some 40 years ago as a teenager.

Jennifer and I found out about the club while working out at the Axiom at The Village in Meridian. As it turned out, we were working out on the same day of the Southwest Idaho All British Field Meet that was going on. After finishing our workout, we strolled through the Village admiring all of the cars and visiting with some of the enthusiastic own- ers. The cars were wonderful and we had a great time looking them over. Before we left, I really examined my favor- ites, which of course were the Austin Healeys, one of which was like one I had owned some 40 years ago. I believe it was Ian's car that I sat and looked at the longest and he was kind enough to let me get behind the wheel and have Jen- nifer get a picture of me in it. From that time on I had the bug and started looking, first just generally looking at eve- rything Healey, both big and small. Then, after setting a budget and fine tuning our search, focusing on the smaller, more affordable Bugeye Sprite. At this point, we consider ourselves very fortunate to have found a solid, drive-able Healey that even though not perfect is such a fun car to drive.

This weekend we will be trying out our (not-so) mechanical skills and giving the car a fresh set of spark plugs, oil change, installing an anti sway bar and a set of very cool driving lights. Wish us luck and we'll see you at the next meeting!!

Alan & Jennifer Coleman
