6 Just Another Drive In The Country

When: Saturday, June 11th. From 10:00 AM until whenever

Where: We'll start at The McDonald's parking lot west of Ann Arbor at Zeeb Road and I-94 (373 N. Zeeb Rd. Ann Arbor).

Details: Hosts Mike and Kathy O'Rear will be there at 9:30 AM so come early and have a cup of coffee and/or chat. We will leave the McDonald's parking lot promptly at 10:00. The drive will roam the back roads of Livingston, Jackson and Washtenaw Counties for approximately 2 hours and 100 miles. No freeways and mostly rural but all paved roads. We'll take a break half-way through the drive in Grass Lake, Michigan. Then we'll continue, again by back roads, to the Zukey Lake Tavern in Hamburg, Michigan where those wishing can "wind down" with a beer or "lunner" (like brunch but later).

No RSVP necessary -- just come

An Evening of Maximum Destruction!!

When: Saturday, July 2nd. at 6:30 PM Where: Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan

Details: Join hosts Jim & Liz Christopher for this Fouth of July weekend event featuring fireworks, stock car racing as well as a slew of utter lunacy in the form of trailer-racing, where the tow vehicle is pulling a trailer; chain-racing, where the tow car has power but lacks brakes and the tow vehicle has brakes but lacks power; and, figure eight school-bus racing where the raceway intersects in the middle of the ¼ mile track. The “racing” can get very, very amusing.

Those interested in attending should email Jim at [email protected]. It is important that you let Jim know that you are planning to attend so that he can account for the size of the group and make arrangements for us to sit together. Be sure and include your mobile phone number. As the event nears you will be advised of a predetermined and easy to spot location in the Auto City Speedway parking lot where we will gather. Guests are certainly welcome and the night will be equally amusing to young and old alike.

May Board/Club Meeting Thanks again to Andy, our new advertiser for hosting our May Meeting. Story and Photos by Mike O’Rear (Editor)

Thanks to the courtesy and enthusiasm of Andy Lekos, Manager of AutoMark Collision Center in Farmington Hills, the May Board/Member meeting was a special event. Andy and his friendly and proud staff showed off their facil- ity and skills to an appreciative audience.

In addition, Andy personally cooked some great burgers, hot dogs and sausages on his grill and served some chili that was “to die for.” What a host!

If you think of a collision shop as a dusty and smelly garage business then you need to visit AutoMark Collision. The precision tooling to make sure replaced or repaired parts Andy Lekos -- business manager, chef and Red Wings are exactly where they should be (rather than just close) fan -- with a classic 911 restoration that the shop has was impressive. 17 Concours d’Elegance of America Announces Track Event

TROY, MI--The Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s (formerly held at Meadow Brook Hall) is pleased to announce the First Annual Concours Track Event at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). Owners of classic cars from around the country are invited to bring their machines to MIS on Friday, July 29, 2011, to experience the thrill of driving on a high speed raceway.

“We are very happy to introduce a track event to the Concours,” said James McCarter, Executive Director of the Concours d’Elegance of America. “Driving vintage cars and high performance vehicles on a professional track is an important part of owning them—it’s no fun just keeping them in the garage. We are planning for this to become an annual part of the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s. Each year will feature a dif- ferent type of racing.”

Spaces in the track event are limited, so McCarter encourages those interested to sign up as soon as possible. Registration Forms are available at the Concours website (www.concoursusa.org) or call the Concours office at (248) 643-8645 and one can be mailed or faxed.

Classes will be developed based the car’s capability, preparation and safety. Each group of cars to hit the track will be of similar vintage and performance levels. Groups will range from 8 to 15 cars. Each registered car is expected to get at least four separate runs on the raceway.

After 32 years at Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Michigan, the Concours d’Elegance of America will move to The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan on Sunday, July 31, 2011. The new location will facilitate a larger show field, an on-site luxury hotel and plenty of opportunities for a robust menu of ancillary events.

A special “100 Years of Indy” class of 33 vintage Indy cars will be on the field at the Concours at St. John on Sunday, July 31. Priority participation in the driving event will be given to the vintage Indy race cars. Many of the pre-1964 cars that raced in the Indianapolis 500 are expected to participate as well as other vintage racers, also on display at the Concours d’Elegance of America at St John’s.

For more information on the Concours d’Elegance of America and all ancillary events please refer to our webpage at www.concoursusa.org.

18 an RS. I converted my 1972 911 E to an RS in the late ‘70’s Ramblings From a Life With and have enjoyed driving it to this day. Since that time I have met a few people who went to the trouble to import Cars a true RS. Occasionally they come up for sale for some Story by SEM-PCA Member Tom Fielitz seriously high prices. Mostly, they sit in the odd garage or museum, too valuable to risk on the road. My other tribute car is a 1999 Corvette Hard Top which resembles a Tribute or Replica Z06 because I liked the looks of the Z06 but not the price.

One of the terms we hear more in auctions and classified I would not advocate that everyone needs to drive ads is the “tribute car.” In its simplest form a tribute car is something nostalgic. But what a boring world it would be a copy or replica of a rare or valuable model of automobile. if there weren’t those people who wanted to own and to There is much debate in the car collector world over the drive the car of their dreams. I am not one to judge their replica or tribute cars. To others they Until next time, serve to fill a void of ownership and driving experience of Tom Fielitz a classic car, unobtainable by any other means, or at the least, more practical to drive than a priceless original. The replica comes in many forms from classic race car to current exotic super car. You might easily pass one on the street and not recognize it. In some instances the replica is so well executed that it challenges even the automobile expert to recognize it. The replica might be home built from a kit, modified from a more common model, or even built on a factory production line. It might be built true to the original specifications of the model or be improved over the original with modern components and performance. There is even the blurry line of the “continuation” replica which can be a faithful copy of the original right down to “new old stock” parts and registered serial numbers.

The contemporary manufacturers are quick to legally protect their trademark designs. But they are equally quick to turn out their own reproductions such as the VW New Beetle, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevy HHR and Ford GT.
