Granby Winter Garden

Granby Winter Garden will be a sustainable, creative community space owned and managed by and for the local community. One house will become an urban indoor garden, full of plants and greenery, opening up the full height of the building up to a glass roof. The house next door will combine a meeting space, a studio that can be used for creative activities, and a “spare room” that will host artists-in-residence as well as paying guests. The building project has been funded by Arts Council , The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation, PH Holt Foundation, The Granada Foundation, The People’s Health Trust and Veolia Environmental Trust.

At times it has felt like we’ve had to rebuild the property from the ground up – it has been a hard, difficult and time consuming project and at every stage we’ve come across challenges that have had to be addressed. Our builders, LBT Construction, have been stoically ploughing on and we are finally seeing the end in sight. A big psychological hurdle has been the installation of the glass roof which has required specialist contractors – however, as we go to press the roof is now on! We are aiming to have the scheme open and ready for use by September. NINA EDGE One of the key parts of developing the Winter Garden is the planting, and we recently announced an arts commission to support this development work. After receiving more than 50 brilliant applications from far and wide, we are delighted to announce that local artist Nina Edge has been chosen for this first commission. Nina is also a passionate and accomplished gardener and we were delighted to find an artist who could bring together true experience working with both people and plants for this important project. Over the next few months Nina will work with local people, horticultural experts and Winter Garden architects Assemble to transform 37-39 Cairns Street into a beautiful indoor garden.

Nina’s commission is the first in a new programme of artists’ projects and residencies for the Winter Garden, developed in partnership with Bluecoat and supported through public funding from Arts Council England. We will be announcing a The programme begins with an introduction range of workshops and activities that will to Nina’s work and an opportunity to share take place over the summer in the lead up to ideas for the commission at our market on the opening in the Autumn 2017, giving a Saturday 1st July and Monday 3rd July at taste of things to come and lots of different 6.30pm @ 142 Granby Street .You can also ways to get involved. catch up with her most Mondays when she plans to be working in and around Granby.

Ducie Street Update

Unfortunately things have slowed down for Ducie Street and the Council have sent through the following update:

“The renovation of Ducie Street is an important component of the regeneration of the Granby Four Streets. It is highly visible to visitors and residents of Granby and it is crucial that the agreed development scheme for Ducie Street is sensitive to the needs of the area and is consistent with the Granby master plan. Disappointingly the City Council was unable to reach an agreement with Steinbeck Studios on a scheme which would be acceptable to both parties. However, a number of alternative proposals are being considered and the Council is working closely with the Granby CLT on the evaluation of these.”

Hopefully a new plan will come forward over the coming months and we can see a development that meets the needs of our community. New Staff

Welcome to our new staff Sara and Shanaz, who have both recently started at the CLT - you may have seen them around the area as they get stuck into project work.

Tazayian Sayira (Sara)

Hi, I am Tazayian Sayira, I have recently joined Granby 4 Streets Community Land Trust as a Social Media and Marketing officer. I am a passionate researcher who likes to spend time with communities, especially at grass roots level, to investigate issues and promote agendas. I have researched and dealt with “hard-to-reach” communities for my doctorate research in the collaboration of Liverpool John Moores University and Hazara University, Pakistan and my expertise includes Research, Communication, Media and Marketing, and Finance and Accountancy.

I consider myself a feminist and have recently published a paper discussing issues faced by women living in places in crisis and their role in communication media and there are two more papers in the pipe-line. I like my work at CLT, as this gives me an opportunity to connect more with my community and with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Last but not least, I try my best to bridge the gap between different communities as an ESOL teacher as well as through my role with the CLT. Shanaz Nawaz Hi, my name is Shanaz Nawaz. My family have run a family business and general store and have served this community for over 33 years. I am looking forward to contributing my skills and knowledge in seeing lasting changes to better this community. Joe and Bob Lambanana’s visit to Mesen

On the 16th June, Joe Farrag and Bob Lambanana left for Flanders via Dover. Their aim being, to deliver 2 beautiful plant pots, containing the rocks/sand etc. from 5 continents, to Mesen in Belgium (also known as Messines). Following on from his idea, they were designed by Assemble and constructed by Anfield Marble Ltd. with stones from five continents including the generous donation of jade gemstones.

During their trip they visited a number of cities and towns on the way and photographed these handmade, unique pots at their respective WW1 memorials. When they arrived in Flanders, they presented the pots to the town of Mesen, from 'The People of Liverpool to commemorate All Teenagers who died during the 'War to end all Wars'.

As well as gifting planters and pigeons from Liverpool to the town of Mesen, Joe and Bob Lambanana were also raising funds for three Merseyside organisations SHAP Ltd, James Greenop Foundation and Tom Harrison House.
