Journal of Applied Mathematics & Bioinformatics, vol.7, no.3, 2017, 13-82 ISSN: 1792-6602 (print), 1792-6939 (online) Scienpress Ltd, 2017 Descriptive Geometry in the Greek Military and Technical Education during the 19th Century Andreas Kastanis1 Abstract Greece came into contact with Descriptive Geometry (henceforth, DG) relatively early. Monge’s courses were taught for a long time in the Greek Military Academy. During the second half of the 19th century the teaching of Descriptive Geometry blossomed. In some of its applications, and especially in the field of Perspective, there were certain ideological obstacles, which were, however, overcome with the advent of Enlightenment. The teaching of DG was extended at the Greek Technical University (Polytechnic School), at the Greek Naval Academy and the School of Non-commissioned Officers (NCO). The French textbooks, written by Leroy or Olivier, were used as the core material for the Greek handbooks. During the last two decades of the 19th Century, the first books which were published in Greek, were mostly translations of the aforementioned French ones. L 123/76 EN Official Journal of the European Union 8.5.2008 COMMISSION DECISION of 28 March 2008 adopting, pursuant to Council Directive 92/43/EEC, a first updated list of sites of Community importance for the Mediterranean biogeographical region (notified under document number C(2008) 1148) (2008/335/EC) THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES, (4) In the context of a dynamic adaptation of the Natura 2000 network, the lists of sites of Community importance are reviewed. The update of that initial list is therefore necessary. Odyssey of the Life Ampiibious Expedition :: X-Ray
Text by Lloyd Godson Photos courtesy of the Life Amphibious Expedition We were headed for the island of Kefalonia off the western coast of mainland Greece. This would be the starting point of the “Life Amphibious” underwater odyssey. The plan was to pedal a human-powered submarine 15 nautical miles (28 kilometres) through the Ionian Sea to mythical Ithaca, the home of Ulysses. In the spirit of Homer’s epic and Jules Verne’s Captain Nemo, we would soon begin our own grand voyage to Ithaca. Andreas Petalas allowed us to use Fiskardo’s Nautical and Environmental Club as our base. When we arrived, a strong southerly wind was blowing and the sea was a mess of waves and whitecaps. Omer 6, our human-powered submarine, had arrived from Canada in time and was being unloaded from a truck. The brains behind this machine, four Omer submarine engineers, were on their way from Canada’s École de Odyssey of the technologie supérieure in Montreal. Lloyd Godson pilots the Omer 6 human- powered submarine off the Ithacan coastline, Greece. Lloyd pedalled Omer 6 for five nautical miles in total and maintained an Life Amphibious average speed of approximately four knots. Darwin”, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Viale dell’Università 32, 00185 Roma, Italy *Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The taxonomy, geographic distribution and ecology of Rhaphidophoridae of Greece are updated herein. At present, 28 species of Dolichopoda Bolívar, 1880 and five species of Troglophilus Krauss, 1879 are known to colonize Greek caves and, in a few circumstances, epigean habitats. Dolichopoda includes a high number of species and shows a wide geo- graphic distribution, including most of Greece. The genus diversity peaks in the Hellenic region, which hosts 28 of the 51 species described thus far. Most of the Dolichopoda species show a high degree of endemism, being recorded from only one or a few caves in restricted geographic areas. The thermo-xerophilic climate characterizing most of the southern Balkan Peninsula and the high fragmentation of the Greek karstic areas could have played an impor- tant role in the reduction of gene flow among cave cricket populations, leading to strong iso- lation and multiple speciation events. All the Dolichopoda species found in the area are highly dependent on caves and show clear adaptations to the subterranean ecosystems. Of the five Troglophilus species known for the area, only two occur in continental Greece, with a very scattered geographic distribution including a few mountain localities in northern and central Greece. -
