1. a Family Break in Paris Arriving in Paris with The Museums, theatres, parks, hotels, restaurants … Paris is a place to explore with the family In every picturesque district, park or cultural venue, there is something for all the family to enjoy. The city caters for children with lots of innovative ideas and new 2015 technology. - 1. A FAMILY BREAK IN PARIS 2014 ARRIVING IN PARIS WITH THE FAMILY All modes of transport for getting to the centre of Paris, from a train station or airport: by bus, metro, RER or taxi. Paris is served by six train stations situated in the centre of the capital. From these, you can take a metro or one of the taxis parked in front of every station. If you are arriving by plane, then there are several ways of getting to the city centre. The Orlybus links Orly airport to place Denfert-Rochereau in the south of Paris, in around 30 minutes (fare: €7.20). Orlyval, a special metro, transports travellers to Antony RER station; from here, RER line B takes travellers on to the city centre (fare Orly-Paris: €11.30 /adult; €5.65 /child 4-10 yrs). From Roissy-Charles-De-Gaulle airport (Terminal 1), RER line B takes you to the city centre Les Halles) in 36 minutes for €9.50. The Roissybus service takes travellers to the Opéra district, in less than an hour (fare: €10). The Air France coaches offer airport transfers from different points in Paris. (single fare: from €12 for adults, €10 for under 25s and €6 for under 11s; return fare: from €20 for adults – different fares according to itinerary). Taxis are another option: the current charge for transfers between Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and central Paris is at least €50, with a 15% increase at night, on Sundays and public holidays, and around €35 from Orly. But the Wecab system at G7 Taxis enables travellers to reduce the cost of a journey by sharing their taxi (advance booking required) to the airport. Taxi sharing is also available for Beauvais airport. Finally, different private shuttle services can be pre-booked at a fixed fare. According to the number of people travelling, you can choose a people carrier, minivan or minibus via companies like Your Shuttle in Paris or Super Euro Shuttle. For family who prefer to read on digital appliances, a Relay room (30 m²) is available at Orly Sud. Passangers can consult digital versions of newspapers, magazines, and literary works including comic books. At Charles de Gaulle, the Relay shop has had a ‘digital bar’ since the end of 2013. For older children, there is entertainment and relaxation with Playstation 3 consoles, tactile tablets to play on their own or together, HD PS3 video rooms and music lounges. Together they criss- cross the 20 arrondissements, whilst the ‘RER’ (suburban express trains) serve the surrounding areas. Not all stations and lines have escalators and lifts to facilitate access for pushchairs and disabled people. And on some buses, only two open pushchairs are permitted: it is therefore advisable to fold your pushchair if there are already two pushchairs open aboard. Note also, there is no charge for children aged under 4, and children aged 4 to 9 pay half fare. A metro or bus ticket costs €1.70 for one ticket and €13.30 for ‘un carnet’ (10 tickets). This ‘ticket T+’ allows travellers to change buses or change between a bus and a tram on their journey within a time period of 1hr30. Note, on a bus, tickets cost 2 euros each. On the metro, children enjoy travelling and seeing Paris monuments from some over-ground sections on lines 2 and 6! Between Olympiades metro station and Saint-Lazare train station, line 14 has a ghostly feel to it as it is fully automatic, with no driver. It hurtles through the tunnels visible through its panoramic glass windows, in front and behind. An impressive sight! Line 1, one of the capital’s oldest metro lines, has also been fully automated. RATP – www.ratp.fr 2 > Taxis and minivans for families With people-carrier taxis and minivans, large families can get around with ease. In Paris, regular saloon taxis are generally limited to three or four passengers (three in the back and sometimes a fourth person in the front). There are several solutions for large families. You can easily find large estate car or minivan type taxis in the streets or you can order one from Parisian companies. By hiring a minivan, you can enjoy a chauffeured journey to or from the airport or even days out with Taxis G7. You can also hire a Taxiloc and Taxis bleus (set fee payable on booking and then the fare for the journey). The Taxiloc minivans can accommodate up to 9 passengers, the Taxis bleus, 7 passengers. Private shuttle services are available for getting around in Paris and the Paris region for a fare that can be arranged in advance. • Paris Descartes University (Paris V) Placement Report
Paris Descartes University (Paris V) Placement Report January 2014 – May 2014 - 1 - WHY I CHOSE TO STUDY ON THE EUROPEAN STUDIES PROGRAMME For me, the option to enrol on the European Studies programme was one of the main attractions of studying Medicine at Manchester above any other university in the United Kingdom. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of learning languages and having studied both German and French at GCSE level, I opted to pursue my French studies further and completed an A level. I thought it would be a shame to not further develop my language skills at this point, having studied French for a number of years and I was keen to attain a good level of fluency. I felt that studying Medicine with European studies (French) would provide the ideal solution as it would allow me to combine my love of learning languages whilst also fulfilling my ambition of becoming a doctor. In addition, the opportunity to undertake SSC placements abroad in 3rd and 4th year, as well as a 16-week placement in final year, was also appealing and I knew this would provide a perfect chance for me to hone my language skills and acquire a good level. My A-level tuition stood me in good stead for starting the language lessons in 1st year as we had been stretched beyond the A level syllabus and I found the lessons in the first few years to be fairly simple and easy to attend as they were timetabled during the day amidst our medical teaching schedule. However, keeping up with french lessons and completing required assignments during clinical years required more organisation and self- motivation.

Théophile-Alexandre STEINLEN (Lausanne 1859 - Paris 1923) Au Bois de Boulogne Pen and black ink and watercolour, within an irregularly shaped overmount. Signed Steinlen at the right centre. A Bruant' on the mount. 289 x 219 mm. [sheet, at greatest dimensions] This drawing by Steinlen illustrates the song ‘Au Bois de Boulogne’ by Aristide Bruant, and was used for the cover of the July 1891 issue of Le Mirliton, a Parisian journal founded by Bruant in 1885 and named after his café of the same name. The cover, as eventually printed, incorporated the score and the lyrics of the song, which alludes to the nocturnal activities known to take place in the Bois de Boulogne, the large park near the western edge of Paris. The lyrics to the song, written by Bruant on the mount of this drawing by Steinlen, may be approximately translated as ‘When looking for a woman in Paris / Nowadays, even if one pays good money / We only meet debris / or carrion; / But to find what you need / There is still a good spot / It’s at the end of Paris ... not far away: / At the Bois de Boulogne.’ As Phillip Dennis Cate has noted of Bruant, ‘His songs were of street people…sung in the argot of the street.
