> Bus, metro or ... good to know Fast and efficient: in Paris takes you everywhere in the capital Paris has a comprehensive network of metros, and . Together they criss- cross the 20 arrondissements, whilst the ‘RER’ (suburban express trains) serve the surrounding areas. Not all stations and lines have escalators and lifts to facilitate access for pushchairs and disabled people. And on some buses, only two open pushchairs are permitted: it is therefore advisable to fold your pushchair if there are already two pushchairs open aboard. Note also, there is no charge for children aged under 4, and children aged 4 to 9 pay half fare. A metro or bus ticket costs €1.70 for one ticket and €13.30 for ‘un carnet’ (10 tickets). This ‘ticket T+’ allows travellers to change buses or change between a bus and a tram on their journey within a time period of 1hr30. Note, on a bus, tickets cost 2 euros each. On the metro, children enjoy travelling and seeing Paris monuments from some over-ground sections on lines 2 and 6! Between Olympiades metro station and Saint-Lazare train station, line 14 has a ghostly feel to it as it is fully automatic, with no driver. It hurtles through the tunnels visible through its panoramic glass windows, in front and behind. An impressive sight! Line 1, one of the capital’s oldest metro lines, has also been fully automated.

SHOWTIME

> Theatre, stories and concerts

Plays, acrobatics, music, stories and magic: children are quick to take pleasure in the fun of performing arts

. For tiny tots Performing arts programmes that stimulate children’s imagination Some theatres have special programmes for children. Actors and performers use all their artistic skills to stimulate their imagination. Shows are performed in French, but the words don’t really matter; children get caught up in the story and the characters on stage. You can also book story time and nursery rhyme events at other venues. There is something for all ages, even for babies from 6 months at the Maison des contes et des histories! And then, as it is never too early to develop a musical ear, the Théâtre du Châtelet offers music workshops (stories, musical ideas, music in practice) linked to concerts being staged there. For concerts for young people, outdoors, there is nowhere better than a lovely park like Le Parc Floral, at certain times of the year. For puppet-show fans, there is the Théâtre de Guignol at certain times. Two other puppet theatres offer something different, one in several places and the other behind the Mairie de Saint-Mandé, near to the merry-go-rounds.

. Just like grown-ups From the most classic works to musicals: ideas for places to go for older children A play by Molière at the Comédie-Française, which has hosted performances of works by the greatest playwrights since 1680; a ballet for children in the prestigious setting of the Opéra-Bastille; a symphonic concert at the Cité de la musique or in a church … Seminal works and great classics are performed all year round in Paris. Musicals are also having a lot of success in the capital with their spectacular staging. Magic shows also take place. Certain cafes, restaurants and cabaret-shows have made it their speciality, such as the Double-fond, where more than 15 shows are programmed in rotation throughout the year. Also, look out for magic shows at many smaller local theatres.

> Hurrah for the circus! In winter, circus big tops sprout like mushrooms Roll up for the circus! Children and adults crowd into the big top, take their seats and wait impatiently for the clowns, trapeze artists and acrobats on horseback to make their entrance. Circus shows start from October onwards for some, from January for others, depending on the company. But the Académie Fratellini and the Chapiteaux space at the Parc de la Villette welcome talented circus troupes all year long. One Thursday each month you can attend the working sessions of their apprentices. And why not learn a few circus arts yourself? La Villette offers workshops for families or children on certain dates: acrobatics, juggling, balancing skills … and even the putting up of a big top!

. Aquariums, zoos, farms

Encounter fish, wild cats, monkeys and birds right in the heart of Paris Paris has all kinds of wild animals to see. The Vincennes zoo will reopen on 12 April 2014 under the name Parc Zoologique de Paris. Savannah, rocky hills, the pampas of Patagonia ... Get ready to make your entrance into the natural environment of the animal world! Right in the heart of the capital, the Jardin des Plantes menagerie is one of the world’s oldest zoos; it is home to orang-utans, big cats, red pandas, Arabian oryx, etc. Across the other side of the garden, in the Grande Galerie de l’évolution of the Muséum d’histoire naturelle, there are realistic looking dinosaurs, mammoths and other life-sized animals to discover. The museum has opened the Galerie des enfants, a permanent exhibition for 6 to 12-year-olds based around four themes: the town, the river, the tropical forest and the planet in general. To see farm animals in the countryside, go to the Ferme de Paris, in the Bois de Vincennes. And also to the Petite Ferme Normande at the Jardin d’Acclimatation which is home to rare domestic species. The Grand Volière at the park is also an important part of historic heritage. Dive into the ‘zen’ world of fish. The 43 tanks at the Aquarium du Trocadéro host an infinite variety of species: angel fish, golden trevally, and thousands of others. Cartoon films add to the pleasure of this wonderful sight. And if you would really like to touch them and feed them the the Maison de la Pêche et de la Nature is the place to go! Workshops are also offered on how to fish.

> Jardin d’Acclimatation Animals, games, merry-go-rounds, workshops and shows: the Jardin d’Acclimatation, a park that has everything for families The Jardin d’Acclimatation was opened in 1860 by Napoléon 3rd at the same time as the Bois de Boulogne. At that time, the park showcased luxuriant plants in its winter garden and also some exotic animals. After the war of 1870, the garden moved in a more playful direction. However, the garden has sought to retain its educational vocation and organizes numerous 2-hour workshops (arts, science, nature and cooking) throughout the year. The Jardin d’Acclimatation also offers a variety of attractions: a wooden climbing course for children aged 6 to 12, and the Belvédère

14 de l’Impératrice, a tree-lined promenade with views of the Eiffel Tower! Not forgetting the Village des Manèges for all ages (not many queues), play areas, pony rides, and the latest show. The Jardin d’Acclimatation still has a little train – now electric - that transports visitors from Porte Maillot. It is also synonymous with the ‘enchanted river’, a vestige from the attractions at the Universal Exhibition of 1926! A large orienteering trail takes adventurers through these places as far as the Korean garden. The 1hr30 trail includes 18 stages with riddles, clues, tests of observation and other challenges. Questions are for children aged 5-8 and 8-12, on the fauna, flora, history and architecture of the park.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

> Fun all year round So much to do in Paris’s major parks and gardens In summer and winter, these places offer all kinds of opportunities for family activities. In the , children play in the sandpits and race along the pathways under the attentive eye of their parents, seated on the green chairs or stone benches. Children can also take a pony or cart ride, sail small wooden boats around the large ornamental pond with the help of a long stick, play on the swings, have a ride on the merry-go-round … or even see a puppet show. And when they’re ready for a snack: two cafes, in the shade of the chestnut trees, and with small cosy rooms, serve hot chocolate, waffles, crêpes and ice-cream as well as savoury snacks. You’ll find the same kind of atmosphere and attractions at the Tuileries Gardens and at the Jardin d’Acclimatation, not forgetting local parks and gardens, most of which have play areas for children.

On the merry-go-round at the Hôtel de Ville, there are traditional carriages, or more unusual animal carriages at the Jardin des Plantes. At the Luxembourg Gardens, the Garnier merry-go-round was built by the architect of the Opera House. With its suspended horses, it is a veritable museum piece. Children can play the traditional ‘jeu de bague’, which consists of catching suspended metal rings on a stick. CRUISES AND TOURS

> Cruises and circuits Buses, boats, little train, balloons or helicopters: so many views of Paris

. Coaches, boats, little trains Take advantage of a sightseeing tour with commentary to discover Paris without getting tired Travelling along Parisian avenues aboard an open-topped double decker bus ... What could be better for tourists than these commentated tours? The sightseeing tours offered by Open Tour and Les Cars rouges include the city’s marvellous heritage. Eight languages are available: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Russian. Practical and fun, the Batobus shuttle boats transport passengers along the river, between the Pont Austerlitz and the Port de La Bourdonnais, gently revealing all the monuments from the water: the Louvre, Notre- Dame Cathedral, Invalides ... Eight stops enable you to get on and off as you like. To have a meal aboard a boat, there are brunches and dinner cruises, with Paris en Scène for example. And why not combine relaxation and education with the Bateaux Parisiens? During La Croisière Promenade aboard a trimaran, children play a quizz game (in French only). And on La Croisière Enchantée, Lila and Philou recount the wonderful through songs and anecdotes. Children also like to climb aboard the Petit Train de Montmartre: white carriages pulled by a locomotive travel along the little streets of the Butte, between little shops, pretty houses, and artists’ easels.

In the air Do you like heights? Balloons, helicopters … admire Paris and its region from the air! If it is height that you are seeking, then take a trip in the Eutelsat tethered air balloon in André-Citroën park, or the PanoraMagique air balloon at Disney® Village. This form of transport is environmentally-friendly and silent, and uses no more energy than a lift. Helicopter tours of Paris are even more unusual, and not well- known. The views are breathtaking! One of the 30-minute tours takes you over major monuments, from the Eiffel Tower to the Château de Vincennes, passing by the Montparnasse Tower (with Helifirst). Another takes you to the west of Paris, as far as Versailles (with Aviaxess). And then there is Airship Paris that gives airship flights over the loveliest places in the Paris region!

> Guided tours Guided tours put Paris, its soul and history within everyone’s grasp Take a guided walk through the labyrinth of streets in the city to find out more about its history, customs and legends ... Tour guides reveal the secrets of Paris. Parisphile offers tours adapted to children (with interpreter): museum visits for children, Da Vinci Code trails for teenagers. Paris d’enfants specializes uniquely in tours for children: ‘must-do’ urban orienteering, paper chases and visits (Versailles, Palais Garnier Opera House, etc.). For its part, Le Petit chercheur d’art organizes family tours for young foreigners in the form of treasure hunts or detective investigations. For a full-scale multimedia show, Paris Story presents Paris across the ages: 2,000 years roll across the panoramic screen. With the company Visites- spectacles, the public is taken on scenic walks in Montmartre or through Paris’s covered passages with a troupe of actors, who take the public back in time to the 1800s. For a bespoke family package, there are specialist travel agencies for foreigners, like Family Twist. For cultural games about Paris, there are several

18 downloadable guided trails for children. The Mission Cinéma de Paris regularly creates trails, linked to recent films, to download on the city’s website. The Paris Mômes website has an activity trail to download related to a current exhibition. Finally, the website of the Monuments nationaux also has several discovery trails at several French monuments (without download).

A BIRTHDAY PARTY IN PARIS

Celebrating children’s birthdays in unusual places Could you ever have imagined celebrating your child’s birthday during a circus show? With Zèbre de Belleville your child goes up onto the stage! With Paris d’enfants, children can experience an ‘historic’ birthday of a different kind during a tour of a district of Paris such as Montmartre or the Marais. Urban orienteering or treasure hunts are rewarded with a birthday cake. Children can also blow out the candles on their cake at the Château de Vincennes, after a visit to the keep and after making a coat of arms! For a birthday indoors, you can invite people to a museum. There are several themes to choose from at: the Musée de la Magie, le Palais de Tokyo, the Musée du Quai Branly, Les Arts Décoratifs, the Musée Jacquemart-André and even the Musée de l'Armée! Finally, there are numerous manual activities possible.

4. EATING OUT WITH THE FAMILY

GOURMET PARIS WITH THE FAMILY

> With the family at a restaurant Restaurants by the water or in unusual places for a relaxing time with the family

. At a tourist attraction

Prolong your visit to a cultural venue with a gourmet snack After visiting a museum, it is nice to go and eat somewhere nearby. If you are in the Jardin des Plantes or visiting the Muséum d’histoire naturelle there, La Baleine is an ideal place to eat. The name of the restaurant refers to the skeleton of the cetacean that is on display in the museum. In the Jardin d’Acclimatation, combined workshop-lunch packages are available in the Grande Verrière so that children can spend all day at the park. At Les Ombres at the Musée du Quai Branly, diners have a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower and rooftops of Paris. You can also enjoy fresh food at the Entrepôt cinema (children’s programme), which has a garden and a conservatory! And Paris’s numerous brasseries and bar-restaurants are also great places to go. You could try a seafood platter at L'Auberge Dab, where the menu is free for children aged under 6! (as it is in other Gérard Joulie restaurants). Below Montmartre, the local bistro Etoile de Montmartre gives out books for children and little tables to draw at. For families visiting the Palace and estate of Versailles, Monument Café offers brunch and an open buffet, 50% reduction for children aged under 10 (free up to age 2). The decor is devoted to Versailles with a virtual tour on a giant model. NB The restaurant organizes real visits to Old Versailles.

. Crêperies Crêperies in Paris are a great hit with children and adults.

Crêperies are ideal for families. They serve a choice of savoury galette de sarrassin followed by a sweet crêpe for a complete meal. You’ll find them notably in the Edgar-Quinet district. Situated a few steps from the Louvre Museum and the Champs-Elysées, the Crêperie Framboise has a modern and spacious interior, with a children’s menu. Plus, the flour used is all 100% organic.

> A quick snack A quick lunch in the city: child-friendly places Parisian bakeries are ideal for a quick bite while out shopping for the day, or before visiting a museum or going to the cinema. Paris also has good-quality fast-food restaurants. If you are in the Champs Elysées district and your children want a burger, take them to Burger & Fils, open since the end of 2013. The decor is a bit offbeat with family photos and you can have your burger ‘personalized’ with a choice of accompaniments. At Galeries Lafayette, you’ll find a choice of sandwiches at Lina’s and a children’s area. Near to the Louvre, the Universal Resto (themed spaces) serves world specialities. Or, the current Parisian predilection is for pasta and quiches and salads at places with modern interiors (Box & Coffee) or cosy (Jardin des Pâtes, La Reine des Tartes). For a classic steak and chips meal, there is La Mère Denis (a nod at the emblematic washerwoman of the 1970s). Fruit cordials are free for children.

Viennoiseries, tarts, macaroons, cakes, tea and hot chocolate: there’s something to tempt everyone! On Wednesday, the Pâtisserie des rêves has mini cakes and cake & pastry making workshops especially for children. Open all week, restaurants for families with young children, such as Les 400 coups, also serve mid-afternoon snacks in play areas. Ideal for a relaxing break! For upscale gourmet snacks, families should go to Dalloyau or Hédiard. Or enjoy the comfort and refinement of the salons of a top hotel, less well known to the general public. Carina à Paris also offers a tea room for private hire in a fine apartment.

> Cakes, ice-cream and other sweet delights Cakes, ice-creams, candy floss for a gourmet treat Parisian cake shops and ice-cream shops delight children and their parents! Under the arcades on rue de Rivoli a short walk from the Louvre, Angelina serves its 26 famous hot chocolate, accompanied by a little pot of whipped cream and its great speciality, the Mont-blanc. On the Ile Saint-Louis, Berthillon has been adding to its range of ice-creams and sorbets since 1950 and now has an astonishing variety of flavours to titillate your taste buds, whatever your age: calisson, cappuccino, praline and pine nut, pineapple, white chocolate and tropical fruit cocktail … Pierre Hermé or Ladurée macaroons are another treat to sample with the family, and can always be packed away in your case to take home. In parks and gardens or in squares, there are also kiosks selling crêpes, ice-cream and candy floss! On the other hand, finding waffles is not so easy in Paris. They are not often sold in crêperies and tea rooms. You can find ‘real’ ones at Yves Camdeborde’s eatery L'Avant-Comptoir and ones to take away at the Jardin d'Acclimatation or on several of the busy shopping avenues.

FOOD AND FUN

> Restaurants for children Games and entertainment for children at the restaurant: hurrah for family brunches! When your children are too young to sit down to a meal, it is wonderful to be able to go to a restaurant that has a special children’s play area like Les 400 coups (19th). Other establishments organize activities such as magic, origami, balloon sculpture, make-up, etc. during the meal (mainly brunch) at the weekend. Parents are therefore left to eat in peace in the main areas of the capital. There are also cooking workshops for children. On Saturday at 11am, at Les 400 coups, and at the Italian restaurant, Casa Luca children can prepare a dish whilst their parents relax. Les Bobines is unique in its genre and combines brunch and an animated film on Saturday, as the restaurant has a cinema auditorium! For teens why not follow dinner with a good film.

> Cafes for play Cafes where everyone can play: games for babies, board games, workshops To make it easier to socialize, play cafes bring people together people from different generations over a game or cultural activity. There are board games at L'Oya Café, whilst at L'Ecole Buissonnière and the Cafézoïde, Le Poussette café, there are staff to help children make objects. For the latter, there is a fee for the second visit. At the Poussette café, parents get children to play, and take part in ‘young parent’ workshops. Simple and friendly occasions, just like at home. Parisians and visitors get the chance to meet each other here and exchange views.

> Look who’s cooking! Learning to cook like a grown-up: the pleasure and pride in being a little cook

Children love stirring, kneading, decorating and, of course, tasting. According to their age and budget, they can have an introduction to cooking, either in a big establishment, or in a workshop in a relaxed atmosphere, for around two hours. At the 400 coups and La Casa Luca, children are invited to cook a quick dish for a family brunch at midday on Saturday. A recent trendy is parent-children workshops for special moments together. At the Jardin d'Acclimatation, the ‘crocochefs’ cook with their parents on Sunday at 11am. The Atelier des chefs offers all types of packages. Finally, at the less-well known Tours de cuisine space, there are workshops for children, and the Atelier Thai organizes events based around Thai recipes for a fun time together (service à la carte).
