EDITORIAL

Welcome to this first edition of 'The South West Genealogist' for 1993. This is the first issue of our fourth year of publication and it is hoped to continue in the same vein as past years, as always contributions from members are always welcome as are any suggestions for the improvement of the newsletter.

1992 was a most successful year for our group as detailed in the Area Administrators corner, our task in 1993 is to keep the momentum going and all members can contribute by encouraging new members to join, participate in some of the projects planned for the year and in general become as involved as you can in the operations of the group. It is amazing how an odd hour here and there allows major tasks to be completed quickly and efficiently. Last year a number of members got involved and the Beattie And Phillips Registers were copied in no time at all. Coming up is the entering of our card system onto computer, so if you have basic keyboard skills and can spare a few hours here and there please become involved, the more participants the quicker it will get done. our ongoing series in Marie's Memorabilia on local schools continues as does our Death Notices from the Hamilton Spectator and our hard working research officer Betty is back with her Warrnambool & District Historicals. Rosemary Archer recently attended a 'Street, family reunion and reports on proceedings.

This issue is larger than planned due to the large amount of material to be included. I hope that is an omen for our operations in 1993.

THE AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER

Dear Members and Friends,

Here we are into a new year, which I hope will be successful for all doing their family research.

Last year saw the membership of our Group increase to 46 members and this is very pleasing, especially as our common interest makes for new and lasting friendships.

Last year we had a Beginners Class which proved to be popular and it is hoped to hold another. If there is interest more advanced classes could be held.

Our Guest Speakers last year spoke on different aspects of Genealogy and were well received by those present. Much interest was shown in our members nights.

Flagstaff Hill Library is continuing to be manned by our volunteers. If you find that you have a couple of hours to spare please contact Rosemary Archer who will put your name on the roster. By helping them we are indirectly helping ourselves.

Fund raising was again successful. This included a Pie Drive, and a Christmas Cake, made and donated by Robin Gray. Raffle was drawn at the end of year breakup at Rafferty's. The winner was Larry Burns, father of member Laurence Burns.

There was much interest shown in the Seminar which is now to be an Annual event. Thanks must go to Members who gave up their time to attend. Betty Inwood should also be thanked for her interest in our group. Some good news! The Fire Brigade Visitor's Book turned up in January. Page Three

AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER (Cont)

The highlight of the year would have to be the copying of the Beattie and Phillips Burial Books.

I was interviewed by Margaret Good on 3WAY FM, subject of course being Genealogy, and as Margaret has researched her families it was just like two old girls having a good old gossip. I enjoyed the half hour..

Till the next time good luck with your researching

Regards to all Marie Boyce Area Administrator

LIBRARY CHANGES

Over the holiday break the Resources Manager and a small band of helpers have accessioned a large number of additions to the library. some bought from our funds and others donated, a large number coming from the A.I.G.S.

This explosion in holdings has necessitated some changes in cabinet layout and changes in policy. Materials may only be borrowed from the left hand cabinet, reference materials. microforms etc in the righthand cabinet may not be borrowed and should be available in the library at all times. MARIE'S MEMORABILIA

This month Marie presents Part 7 of her series of items on schools in Warrnambool and the surrounding district.

Page numbers quoted after the school number are the page on which the history of the school is covered in book 2 of Vision and Realisation'.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE VICINITY OF WARRNAMBOOL INCLUDING THE TERANG, MORTLAKE, CARAMUT, KOROIT AND PORT FAIRY AREAS. PART 7

BROADWATER School Number 1250 (formerly DEEP CREEK) see page 912

First known as Deep Creek this school opened in a leased building 241811874,(it was formerly used as a private school) with F Boyle as Head Teacher. A more commodious building with living quarters was erected in 1875 and officially opened February 1876. The school closed in 1911, to reopen first as a subsidised school in 1918 and as a Government School in 1919. In 1936 the name was changed to Broadwater. There were back to Broadwater celebrations in 1966.

KEILAMBETE School Number 1353 see page 913

In 1868 part of the country known as East Keilambete was opened for selection. As from 1870 Mrs J Stewart taught unpaid for 2 years. The Government took charge in 1872 and in 1874 erected a better building where Mrs Stewart remained as teacher for another 30 years. The school closed in 1916 because of reduced numbers.

ORFORD School Number 1374 (see Orford School Number 1898) see page 914

LAANG School Number 1411 see page 914

The locals cleared 2 acres of land and erected a wooden building. SS 1411 officially opened 151111875. Bernard Devlin came from Nagambie and was the first head teacher.

ELLERSLIE School Number 1461 see page 915

In 1871, following the erection of a Church. J Edwards conducted classes in the church hall. Shortly after the Committee erected a wooden school and in December of that year the Board of Education granted a salary to the teacher of Ellerslie No. 1127. The school closed in October 1872 because of low attendances and reopened in October 1874 as No. 1461 with Helen McBean as first Head Teacher. Present building erected in 1929 and in 1937 a residence was added. Page Six

MARIE'S MEMORABILIA (Cont)

CODRINGTON School Number 1613 see page 91718

It is thought that the area where the school is situated received its name from a bushranger, who during the 1850's was known as "The Scourge of Port Fairy". After his holdups he would always retreat into hiding in the bush near Codrington. His name was Codrington Revingstone. The site for a school was gazetted 131211874 on Crown Land. Building was completed 281711875. The first Head Teacher was Miss Mary A Allison. From 1916 to 1918 Codrington was worked part time with SS 1714 St. Helens, and between 1940 and 1942 with SS 1020 Aringa.

NULLAWARRE School Number 1652 see page 918

Charles A Bruford first opened this school in November 1875. The Pupils Register, STILL PRESERVED IN THE SCHOOL, shows that the 1875 families included those of Mathieson, Ryan, Wallace. Henry, Smith, McGuinness. McDowell and Burley. The present building dates from 195718.

ST HELENS School Number 1714 see page 919

In 1871 the parents of the area formed a Committee and proceeded to build a school. They engaged Mrs Margaret Roe as Head Teacher at a fee of 25 shillings a week. SS 1714 St. Helens opened 121311876 with Mrs Roe retained as Head Teacher. During 1916 to 1921 the school was conducted part-time with Codrington. It closed in 1923 and reopened in 1929. The original building is still in use.

WARRNAMBOOL School Number 1743 see page 919/20

For the early story of this school see 636 Warrnambool which deals with the National Board's School. For the Denominational establishments see 680 (Catholic), 673 (wesleyan) and 661 (Church of England). A public meeting in 1863 supported the aim of teachers to amalgamate the several Denominational Schools and the National School. J Burston succeeded McLeish as Head Teacher in 1872. A site of 6.1 acres at the corner of Jamieson St and Raglan Parade was set aside for the new school No. 1743. This opened 11811876 and the Head Teacher was William Bryant. Notable students include John Chittick 1956 and 1960 Olympic Hurdler. and Phillip LeCouteur won the distinction of being a Rhodes Scholar. OUR GROUP HOLDS THE BOOKLET ISSUED FOR THE CENTENARY OF SCHOOL 1743.

GRASMERE School Number 1817 see page 922

Situated 8 miles from Warrnambool this school opened January 1877 under Head Teacher Henry T Morse. Records of the Grasmere School are on microfilm at the Warrnambool City Library.

This series will continue next issue. Page Seven

THE STREET FAMILY REUNION

by Rosemary Archer

On Sunday October 5th 1992, a Street Family Reunion was held at Newtown, Tasmania, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Jemima Street from Pirton, Hertfordshire.

Jemima was the wife of Richard Street, who was convicted in July 1835 for stealing pigeons. He was transported to Tasmania for 14 years. He arrived on the Elphinstone in 1836 and was assigned to Mr J L Pedder (later Sir John Pedder). When Jemima and three children arrived in Hobart in September 1842 they were supported by Sir John until Richard was able to provide for them himself.

The family eventually purchased land in Newtown (now Lenah Valley) and had an orchard and market garden. Five more children were born in Tasmania. Apart from two of the girls, descendants from the remainder of these children were present. it had taken about 15 months to organise and a committee was formed in Hobart which included one Victorian, David Street, who produced a book about the family's history. on Saturday 4th, a short historical walk around Hobart was taken by about 60 people. Ian Street had produced a brochure entitled A Walk in Richard's Footsteps' and we followed a trail to view old buildings that would have been there in the days when he landed at the quay.

In the evening a meal was held for those wanting to meet and talk and 25 attended, giving us the chance to get to know distant relatives before the big day.

The Sunday turned out to be the first day of daylight saving and most people appeared to 'get to the church on time' at St John's Church of England, Newtown, to attend morning service. An outline of the family's involvement with the church was given and three family members took part in the service, one being Rev Robert Street, Chaplain at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. After the service we were shown some old records, taken around the church and up the bell tower to view the clock. From there we went to the Lenah Valley Community Hall. Two white and brown pigeons in a cage greeted us all at the door as a reminder of Richard and the reason for his arrival.

The hall was divided into eight section each representing th e descendants of the eight children. Space was provided to display photos and momentos. At registration we were given a name tag colour coded to distinguish each family group. We all had to dodge cameras and family, groups as they lined up to be photographed with the pigeons proudly displayed in the front row.

The committee had arranged a light luncheon, and later afternoon tea that went on continuously through the day. A photocopier was available and it worked flat out as we swapped notes and photos.

Over all about 200 attended, people coming from New Zealand, , Queensland, and Victoria.

By 5pm there were many hoarse voices and tired people but all agreed it had been a wonderful day. Page Nine
