Preface By the mid 19 th Century, unable to sustain their large families during the potato famine and after years of impost by government and landlords, many Irish turned to the distant shores of Australia, the Americas, England and New Zealand, looking for a fuller life. The anniversary of the first migration of members of the Carrucan families of Fanore and Fisherstreet [Doolin], provides an occasion to honour those forebears who faced critical decisions concerning a family's survival. Bridget Carrucan was first of this family to leave the home village of Fanore, County Clare, in November 1853 Soon after her marriage in Australia, her brothers Patrick and Peter joined her and were followed by their mother after their father's death in 1862. In the 1880's, two of their great-nieces chose to migrate to the USA while a cousin, also named Bridget 1 went to South Australia. From these small beginnings a family numbering more than five thousand members has burgeoned. A tribute to the Carrucan Clan records 2 '…there is a saying in the Irish language - still spoken in the land where your forebears were born - Mura gcuirfidh tú san earrach ní bhainfidh tú san fhómhar - which can be translated - if you do not sow in the Spring you will not reap in the Autumn.' It is those forbears whom we honour and dedicate this Book. -

IN MY BLOOD IT RUNS Directed by Maya Newell In Collaboration with Dujuan Hoosan, Carol Turner, Megan Hoosan, James Mawson, Margaret Anderson LOGLINE When Dujuan cannot run nor fight alone, he faces the history that runs straight into him and realises that not only has he inherited the trauma and dispossession of his land, but also the resilience and resistance of many generations of his people which holds the key to his future. SYNOPSIS Ten-year-old Dujuan is a child-healer, a good hunter and speaks three languages. As he shares his wisdom of history and the complex world around him we see his spark and intelligence. Yet Dujuan is ‘failing’ in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police. As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrernte education alongside his western education lest he becomes another statistic. Alex Kelly Attention: Committee Secretary Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee [email protected] Regarding: a. the impact of the 2014 and 2015 Commonwealth Budget decisions on the Arts; b. the suitability and appropriateness of the establishment of a National Programme for Excellence in the Arts, to be administered by the Ministry for the Arts July 15th 2015 To Whom It May Concern: I am a practicing artist and arts worker who has lived in Central Australia for the past 12 years. I work as a documentary filmmaker and a producer of community arts and cultural development projects. I was the 2009 Australia for the Arts Kirk Robson Award winner and was granted a Churchill Fellowship to explore my practice internationally in 2012. Please find my full biography attached at the end of this submission. I am deeply concerned about the announcement that $104.8M will be removed over four years from the Australia Council's funding. I am alarmed to hear that these funds will instead be used to establish a new 'National Program for Excellence in the Arts'. From 2005-2010 I was Creative Producer of the Big hART’s Ngapartji Ngapartji project. This was a $2.8M project, a small portion of which was granted through the Community Partnerships division of the Australia Council for the Arts. Ngapartji Ngapartji was a project that punched well above its weight. In our six years of operation we worked with over 250 Pitjantjatjara young people, produced over 75 short films, an award winning feature documentary for ABCTV, two touring theatre productions – which were seen by over 29,000 people at 10 festivals around the country and in London and Rotterdam – as well as delivering a crime prevention project for the Attorney General’s department and playing a leading role in the development of the National Indigenous Languages Policy.
