The evolution of the set-top box: Current and future trends affecting return path data measurement Analysts: Matt Stump, Karen Brown Prepared for the Council for Research Excellence by One Touch Intelligence © 2012 One Touch Intelligence, LLC. INDEX 4 Multichannel video program distributors 9 Gaming consoles 12 Smart TVs/Blu-ray players 15 Internet video set-top boxes 25 Tablets/smartphones 26 Summary 2 The evolution of the set-top box — September 2012 INTRODUCTION The set-top box world dominated by cable, DBS and telephone companies is evolving into a more fractured environment for the delivery of live linear programming and video-on-demand content from broadcasters and cable networks. The growth in broadband subscribers and Internet speeds plus the rapid adoption of all manner of digital devices have created a second ecosystem adjacent to the current pay TV environment. Content providers that have been shut out of traditional channel delivery are finding Internet aggregators only too happy to test the limits of the pay TV ecosystem by giving consumers choices beyond traditional broadcast and cable network lineups. At the same time, many of these online aggregators represent an opportunity for content providers to extend the visibility for much of their library product. Such providers also present a promotional opportunity for newly produced content. For multichannel video program distributors (MVPDs), online aggregators present both a cord-cutting threat and a broadband opportunity, since consumers need a broadband connection to access such services. As content distribution has spread to new outlets, new devices have been created for consumers to view that content.

TO OUR SHAREHOLDERS, CUSTOMERS, PARTNERS AND EMPLOYEES: This is a unique letter for me – the last shareholder letter I will write as the CEO of the company I love. We have always believed that technology will unleash human potential and that is why I have come to work every day with a heart full of passion for more than 30 years. Fiscal Year 2013 was a pivotal year for Microsoft in every sense of the word. Last year in my letter to you I declared a fundamental shift in our business to a devices and services company. This transformation impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses. This past year we took the first big bold steps forward in our transformation and we did it while growing revenue to $77.8 billion (up 6 percent). In addition, we returned $12.3 billion (up 15 percent) to shareholders through dividends and stock repurchases. While we were able to grow revenue to a record level, our earnings results reflect investments as well as some of the challenges of undertaking a transformation of this magnitude. With this as backdrop, I’d like to summarize where we are now and where we’re headed, because it helps explain why I’m so enthusiastic about the opportunity ahead. Our strategy: High-value activities enabled by a family of devices and services We are still in the early days of our transformation, yet we made strong progress in the past year launching devices and services that people love and businesses need.

  • Making Innovation Work, First Edition
Praise for Making Innovation Work, First Edition “This is the book I wish I had read thirty years ago. Making Innovation Work is an important resource for leaders who are trying to improve innovation in their organizations. It’s crammed with examples and practical ideas that can trigger improvements in innovation, starting tomorrow!” —Lew Platt, Chairman of Boeing, former Chairman and CEO of HP, and former CEO of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates “Davila, Epstein, and Shelton remind us that even if the end product is rocket science, the process need not be. To the contrary, tried-and-true practices of management, process, metrics, and incentives are all that it takes to let innovation happen consistently.” —Andrew Beebe, President, EnergyInnovations “Making Innovation Work is a fresh approach to systematically manag- ing innovation. It integrates the innovation management literature in a way that is insightful, creative, as well as pragmatic. Davila, Epstein, and Shelton have particularly fresh insights on learning, culture, leadership, and executing change. This book will be of great help to those managers leading innovation and change.” —Michael Tushman, Paul R. Lawrence MBA Class of 1942 Professor of Business Administration, Graduate School of Business, Harvard Uni- versity, and author of Managing Strategic Innovation and Change and Winning through Innovation “This impressive book offers specific techniques for driving systematic, repeatable, and managed innovation at all levels in your company. It will help you build a balanced portfolio that integrates both incremental and radical innovations—so you can sustain growth indefinitely, instead of flaming out.” —Guerrino de Luca, President and CEO, Logitech “Making Innovation Work provides an excellent roadmap to innova- tion: its various facets, why each facet matters, and how they can be enhanced—separately and collectively—in any organization.

  • Case Mary Kay Cosmetics
Hinkle, Charles L. and Steinman, Esther F. CASES IN MARKETING MANAGMENT: Issues for the 1980s Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1984 CASE 26 MMAARRYY KKAAYY CCOOSSMMEETTIICCSS,, IINNCC.. BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY A proliferation of products and a change of partners that might dazzle a square dance caller have characterized the cosmetics industry in the late 1970s and the 1980s. Witness Eli Lilly’s purchase of Elizabeth Arden, Squibb’s acquisition of Lanvin-Charles of Ritz, Pfizer’s take-over of Coty, Norton Simon’s of Max Factor, Colgate-Palmolive’s of Helena Rubenstein, not to mention British-American Tobacco’s gobbling up Germaine Monteil. Accompanying the change of corporate identities there has been a distinct shift in management styles as practiced in cosmetics concerns. The “flair and flamboyance” of the old school cosmetics moguls—the Revsons, Rubensteins, and Ardens of the industry—has been replaced by a new breed of management types. Charisma has given way to pragmatism. The new styles are diverse, however—as urbane, cool, and international as ITT-trained Revlon’s chief executive, the Frenchman Michel Bergerac, or as fundamentalist, nouveaux riches, and Texas-grown as Mary Kay Ash, founder and driving force behind Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc., whose pink Cadillac incentive plan for sales agents and skyrocketing corporate profits have made Mary Kay a legend in the highly competitive American cosmetics business. In 1963 Mary Kay Ash, a much decorated veteran of in-home sales (Child Psychology Bookshelf, Stanley Home Products, World Gift) founded Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc., on $5,000 for product formulas, containers, and secondhand office equipment and on the belief that women could be sold on using a proven skin care regimen through an educational approach.
