Issue No. 4 District 25C Chronicles October 2016

Wow and More Wow!

Just when I thought the highlight of the September was the District 25C Banner Night on September 25th, the clubs of District 25C just put the cherry on top of the sundae with the District’s first 100%-100% filing month of our Monthly Membership Reports (MMR) and Service Activity Reports (SAR). There was no way that we are not going to celebrate, and my article just had to take a back seat to this feat. This just may be the first time that this has ever been accomplished in any of the districts in and even possibly the entire world. There is just one word that really applies:

So now, let’s take a breath. Breathe…breathe…breathe! Now back to Banner Night. It was really great to see a total of 21 club banners spanning the room the room in Martinsville, and all of the Past District Governors passing the flame of Lionism (even though they were only battery powered candles) across the generations of Lions represented.

My home club, the Martinsville Noon Lions Club, hosted the event, and I can never thank them enough for all of the support that they have shown since I decided to move into the chairs of eventually becoming your District Governor. There are so many people and Lions to thank and just so much space, but I really want to thank our First Lady of District 25C, Lion Jennifer, for all of her hard work on rounding up the volunteers, making countless telephone calls, and making the afternoon a success. The cakes were just one of the hits. They all did a banner job.

As we usher in October, my District Governor tour really starts to pick up steam. There are nine club visitations scheduled this month, and even more scheduled in November. There are still eight clubs which need to schedule their official visits. And when I do make it to your club, don’t forget to come up with your “Remember when…?” stories. I’m starting to amass quite a collection of stories from our clubs.

Probably the most important event for the Lions of Indiana this month is when Lions Clubs International President Bob Corlew comes back to Indiana on October 23-24. IP Bob will be coming to the Council of Governors meeting in on the 23rd, followed by an informal dinner in Clermont, Indiana (see the flier), and then going to the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office on the 24th. That is the day that he will be reenacting the original signing of the incorporation papers of the International Association of Lions Club, as filed by Dr. W.P. Woods on October 24, 1916.

This reenactment, 100 years to the day, is extremely significant for the Lions of Indiana. We have always heard about how Melvin Jones started a letter writing campaign in 1917 to invite like-minded individuals to meet in Chicago, Illinois, and how he became known as the “Founder” of Lions Clubs International, but International President Corlew’s coming to Indiana to celebrate this anniversary cements Indiana’s claim as being the true birthplace of Lionism. This is something that should make the Lions of Indiana proud.

Leadership and Learning in Omaha

In my last column, I referenced that Summer was almost gone, and as I sit here with a jacket on, I think it has. Although we may have a few more hot days, enjoy the cooler weather!

During September 14th through the 17th, I was able to attend the USA/Canada Leadership Forum that was held in Omaha, Nebraska. This was my first Leadership Forum, and it was a great experience. I and another First VDG traveled to Omaha on Wednesday the 14th so that we could be there ahead of the beginning meetings on Thursday. That left time to get ourselves acclimated to the area, and pick up a few essentials.

The banquets were very nice, giving an opportunity to meet Lions from many different areas. The food was wonderful, and there was a lot of it!

There were 71 different seminars, which meant that everyone could find something that would interest them. I had to choose seminars that would help me in what I’m going to be doing in the next couple of years, but next year when the Forum is held in Portland, Oregon, I will have an opportunity to pick up some of the other seminars that looked interesting. In 2018 the Forum will be in Columbus, Ohio, 2019 in Spokane, Washington, 2020 in Louisville, Kentucky.

One of the really special parts of the Forum was the Service Project that I participated in on Saturday afternoon. USA/Canada Forum partnered with The Outreach Program, whose mission is “Providing safe water, food, medical care and education to children and those in need at home and abroad.” to package over 100,000 meals that would be distributed to locations in Omaha. It was a lot of fun working on the assembly line with people that I had never met before, and was great knowing that this group effort was going to help those in most need.

For those of you who have not attended a District Banner Night, you missed a great one in Martinsville on Sunday, September 25th. This is a time for fellowship with other Lions in your District (or Multiple District), as well as the transferring of the Banner from the Immediate Past District Governor to the current District Governor. Fellowship is the key word here. So many times we are in a situation when we are attending a conference or a convention that we don’t have time to socialize. Banner Nights are great for that—building a relationship with Lions from all over the District and Multiple District.

I’d like to suggest that you start making plans to attend the 25C District Convention which will be held March 11, 2017 at Turkey Run State Park, and the 2017 Lions Indiana State Convention which will be held April 26-30, 2017 in Evansville, Indiana.

Yours in Lionism,

Chloe Weyrauch

International President (IP) Corlew recently announced that we reached the 100 million people served milestone in the Centennial Service Challenge. As we celebrate this incredible accomplishment, let's renew our commit- ment to serve those who need us so much. The Centennial Celebration is a great time for every Lion to get involved in service.

There is still time to invite new members to serve with you, to dedicate a Centennial Community Legacy Project in your community, and continue supporting the Centennial Service Challenge by hosting youth, vision, hunger and environmental projects. Be sure to report your activities through MyLCI so we can share our impact with Lions and the world.

How will your club celebrate our Centennial? In between service projects and recruitment events, take some time to celebrate the Centennial with your club. After all, this only happens once every 100 years. "Ways to Celebrate" on the LCI website contains a list of ideas to get you started (www.lionsclubs.org --- Lions 100 -- Programs -- Ways to Celebrate). Share your ideas with me, and I will share them with the district through our e- mail communication system.

Congratulations Lions

Congratulations to all our clubs for the filing of last month’s Monthly Membership Reports (MMR) and Service Activity Reports (SAR). The standard is set and our goal 100% filing each month of both of these reports has been. By only taking a few minutes each month, you have made District 25C the leader in reporting.

With harvest season starting, some members will be absent from club meetings. So it is up to all of us to keep them informed on activities of your club. Make a call to a fellow Lion and let them know they are missed.

Our 2nd Cabinet Meeting is October 15, in Martinsville. Come join us and together will we make this a productive meeting full of good fellowship.

Lastly, why not get involved with vision screening? The rewards are great!

Thanks, Doug Eversole, 2nd VDG

A New Possibility

The Brownsburg Lions took the opportunity in attending a “Volunteer Fair.” The purpose of this event was to allow Not-for-Profit organizations to showcase their activities to the public and answer questions.

The Lions displayed the State Projects, described individual clubs and had a great time! As a result of this event, they talked with nearly a hundred people about the impact of programs related to Leader Dog, Speech and Hearing, the Eye Bank, ISBVI, and Cancer. Concrete results included two new members for Brownsburg, a possible member for Lizton, and a mother and 10-year-old daughter who want to volunteer for the Christmas Parade and Breakfast with Santa for the Brownsburg Club.

This sort of event is excellent exposure for you club! If you would like information and/or ideas about to make this sort of event happen, contact Lion Ray Furner at 317-852-8087, or email him at [email protected].

Vision Services Committee and Updates

There are a number of exciting moves happening in the District and State Lions Vision world!

Vision Screening season is starting! We are welcoming the Logansport schools and North Montgomery Schools to this year’s screening efforts, along with four other school corporations. Our current forecast is another record year of SchoolSight in District C: over 28,000 kids screened by Lions teams.

Lafayette Lions hosted our first screening training of the year on September 13th with 21 Lions from seven clubs attending. Purdue Pre-Optometry students also attended, and are fired up about this year’s efforts.

Some of our teams are short of veteran screeners due to family emergencies or medical issues this year. So if you were ever interested in screening, Now’s the time! Save the date for October 11th and sign up for training now! Contact your club secretary or Zone Chair for more information.

October 10-15th is World Vision Week, with Lions awards for participation! Have your club help with a screening or perform another event to support vision or aid to the blind and WIN! Eyeglass recycling, vision screening, leader dog parties, you name it, DO IT and win a nice attaboy from Lions.

At the State level, the Sight Conservation committee has been renamed Vision Services. There is a proposal before Council to re-task the committee to help support district and club efforts in vision screening, vision support, and vision education. This would help clubs provide more services and be better equipped to provide screenings. The language to make this change is now in committee for approval and will be presented at the next Council meeting for action. This is a very exciting and promising development.

Fall is a perfect time to sponsor a community eyeglass recycling drive! This is an easy project that can be added to fall festivals, cookouts and events of all types. Contact Lora Fenwick (Brazil Lions) at (812) 878-2170 for more info.

October 11th will also be a training date for Operation KidSight camera screening for pre-schoolers. This is one of the easiest and fun screening projects you can do.

Indiana Lions vision efforts are well known- we are the model for many efforts in screening, aid to the blind, eyeglass recycling, and eyeglass provision. At the USA-Canada Forum this year, the questions to me were always “How do you do this in Indiana?” Our reputation precedes us. It has been built on your dedication to deliver the help when other agencies and organizations failed.

We Serve. We Deliver. I’m proud of each and every one of our 25C Lions.

2018 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION PIN DESIGN Las vegas, nevada, usA

The 2018 International Convention is again here in the USA… …not as close as Chicago, but only a short flight away.

1. Start thinking about gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment and nightlife. And don’t forget the Grand Canyon and the Flying Elvis’s! 2. This design does not have to be created by a Lion, but can be submitted by Lions friends and family members, Leos or students in our communities. 3. Remember, we are looking for concepts, not finished art 4. Each club is asked to submit 1 design to its District Governor by (DG sets date). 5. One design will be selected by each DG and submitted to State Council in January. 6. One of these will be selected to be our MD25 state pin for 2018. 7. The pin design must include:

• MD 25 Indiana (as text) • Las Vegas representation • 2018 • MD25 graphic representation • The Lion Club Intl. Logo

8. Our MD 25 pin usually includes a race car and/or the outline of Indiana. 9. Other than these criteria, the design options are pretty much wide open. 10. So, get your creative juices flowing and let’s see a winning design from MD-25!

Happy Birthday Lions! That is the theme for the 2017 Indiana Lions State Convention in Evansville on April 28—30, 2017.

Make your plans now to join Lions from across the state of Indiana at the 2017 Indiana Lions State Convention to celebrate 100 years of lionism. More than 130 Lions have already pre-registered for the convention. The convention will be hosted by the Oakland City and Petersburg Lions Clubs, assisted by Lions from throughout District 25-E.

Lions Clubs International President Chancellor Robert Corlew will be our special guest at the conven- tion. IP Corlew will participate in the presentation of awards at the Awards Luncheon on Saturday, and will be the keynote speaker at the All-State Banquet on Saturday evening. Convention attendees will have an opportunity to meet IP Corlew during a seminar session on Saturday afternoon.

A frequently asked question about the convention is: “What is the dress code for the All-State Banquet on Saturday evening?” The District Governors and other Lions leaders seated at the head table will be wearing formal dinner jackets, but this is a Lions function and Lions apparel is always appropriate at a Lions function. Please plan to attend the All-State Banquet, even if you don’t have a Lions vest or shirt. We want you there, no matter what you wear.

Several exciting events and tours are being planned including a Friday evening dinner aboard the LST 325. LST 325 is a restored, fully operational, Navy ship that actually served our country in WWII. The LST is docked in Evansville on the and will provide a unique dining experience. There will be a special seminar on the “Legacy of Dr. William P. Woods”, LCI’s first International President, who just happened to be from Evansville.

A theme basket for the Silent Auction is a great way for your club to participate in the convention.

There is no charge to attend the convention business sessions, seminars, or visit the exhibit tables. We have done our best to provide affordable meals at the convention, including children menus for the Saturday Luncheon, All-State Banquet, and Sunday Brunch. Walk-in registrations will be accepted during the convention, however, no meal reservations will be accepted after April 20. The deadline for meal reservations at regular prices is April 1. After April 1, the price for each meal will increase by $5.00. We encourage you to register early to avoid the added cost.

We look forward to celebrating 100 years of lionism with you at the 2017 Indiana Lions State Convention! INDIANA LIONS 2017 STATE CONVENTION APRIL 28 – 30, 2017
