  • Colonial Transformation in the District of Sheikhupura, 1849-1947
Iram Naseer Ahmad* COLONIAL TRANSFORMATION IN THE DISTRICT OF SHEIKHUPURA, 1849-1947 Abstract This research paper analyses the British colonial transformation in the district of Sheikhupura. The geographical, revenue, judicial and administrative changes have been understood in the sense of establishing a controlled society in the district. This paper sheds light on colonial changes in the district of Sheikhupura under the British raj from 1857 to 1947. The phenomenon of introducing a new administrative and revenue mechanism in Sheikhupura was a project that was not detached from imperialistic ambitions and designs of colonial power in whole of India. The new colonial administrative system, including the reorganization and demarcation of boundaries and setting up centralized administrative machinery particularly a strong revenue, police, and judicial system. Ironically, it was devised to effectively protect the “world monopoly of industrial production” in the British India. It was enforced effectively by a reconstitution of the power structure of the land which meant search for new allies. At the end the article examines the origin of new towns and tehsils in Sheikhupura after the advent of British rule. It observes that British colonialism altered the whole scenario in Sheikhupura which was considered of crucially important for initial colonial control in this district. Keywords: Sheikhupura, British, Imperialism, colonialism The era of British colonialism in the district of Sheikhupura has been divided into three stages. The first stage of colonialism stretches from 1600 to 1757, it deals with the period of monopoly of natural trade and extraction of revenue.1In this stage British traders monopolized the trade with the other European traders as well.

  • The Mevlevi Path Versus Gurdjieffism
Why Gurdjieff's "Fourth Way" Teachings are not Compatible with the Mevlevi Sufi Way About Dar-Al- by Ibrahim Gamard, 11/6/04, revised 12/3/05 Masnavi The Mevlevi Order The Present Confusion Masnavi The following article is intended to share information, based on the author's conclusions Divan after studying this subject for many years. Though it may be controversial, the intent is to Prose Works stimulate respectful discussion--not angry debate. And the aim is certainly not to blame or condemn individuals currently involved practices based on Gurdjieff's teachings. After Discussion Board all, a number of contemporary Mevlevis in Western countries were themselves trained Contact through such teachings to some extent, and report that it was quite helpful in preparing them for the Mevlevi dervish path. Links Home There has been much confusion for decades about the so-called "sufi origins" of Gurdjieff's teachings, beliefs that Gurdjieff himself was a sufi (of the "blame-seeking" [malâmâtî] kind, as some have speculated) and assumptions that the spiritual training he gave to his students was "dervish training" and that the movement exercises he taught were "dervish dance movements." This confusion has been increased by some of Gurdjieff's disciples themselves, such as Ouspensky, who apparently believed that the Mevlevi tradition was the source of Gurdjieff's teachings1 and J. G. Bennett ,who believed that the Khwajagan sufi masters of Central Asia, the forerunners of the strictly Islamic Naqshbandi sufi tradition, were closely linked with the mysterious source of Gurdjieff's teachings--the "Sarmân Brotherhood."2 Others have gone to authentic Muslim sufi teachers and added to the confusion by hoping to find the roots of Gurdjieff's teachings in the Islamic sufi tradition: as a result, such seekers have been disappointed by finding "merely religious" Islamic mystical teachings.

  • Mazdak Movement: "Mazdakism" by Prof. Ehsan Yarshater Prof. Ehsan
Mazdak Movement: "Mazdakism" by Prof. Ehsan Yarshater Prof. Ehsan Yarshater is Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies at Columbia University. He was a long time Editor in Chief of Bongaah-e Tarjomeh va Nashr-e Ketaab, the leading research and publication institution in Iran. He is the foremost authority in Iranian studies, raging from history, language, religion, to arts. The most authoritative book of history about the Sassanid is entitled, "The Cambridge History of Iran," Volume 3, The Seleucid, Parthian and Sasanian Period," edited by Ehsan Yarshater, Parts 1 and 2, Cambridge University Press, 1983. The Chapter 27 (a) of the book is entitled "Manichaeism and its Iranian Background." The following chapter, Chapter 27(b), is entitled "Mazdakism," and is writtend by Prof. Yarshater, pages 991-1024. Prof. Yarshater begins the chapter by some general comments, then elaborates on the sources for studying the movement, then divides the movement into "the Early Stage of Mazdakism," "the Second Stage of Mazdakism," and "the Third stage of Mazdakism." He then describes the doctrine of the movement in detail, followed by the conclusion section. The following is the beginning of the "Conclusion" section (page 1018): We may then chart the course of the Mazdakite movement as follows. Sometime in the course of the 5th century, presumably during or soon after the reign of Bahram V, Zardusht Khurragaan, a mobad or possibly a chief mobad of Fasaa, began reform movement in Zoroastrian religion; he claimed to offer a correct interpretation of the Avesta. It is also possible that, claiming, to be an incarnation of an earlier leader, he only renewed and elaborated a movement begun previously by one Bundos, who had resided in Rome for a while and who had come under the influence of some gnostic religions there.

NIEMEIJER THE HAGUE - MAR TINUS NIJHOFF 1972 I.S.B.N.90.247.1334.X PREFACE The first incentive to write this book originated from a post-graduate course in Asian history which the University of Amsterdam organized in 1966. I am happy to acknowledge that the university where I received my training in the period from 1933 to 1940 also provided the stimulus for its final completion. I am greatly indebted to the personal interest taken in my studies by professor Dr. W. F. Wertheim and Dr. J. M. Pluvier. Without their encouragement, their critical observations and their advice the result would certainly have been of less value than it may be now. The same applies to Mrs. Dr. S. C. L. Vreede-de Stuers, who was prevented only by ill-health from playing a more active role in the last phase of preparation of this thesis. I am also grateful to professor Dr. G. F. Pijper who was kind enough to read the second chapter of my book and gave me valuable advice. Beside this personal and scholarly help I am indebted for assistance of a more technical character to the staff of the India Office Library and the India Office Records, and also to the staff of the Public Record Office, who were invariably kind and helpful in guiding a foreigner through the intricacies of their libraries and archives.
