Sociological Theories of Deviance: Definitions & Considerations NCSS Strands: Individuals, Groups, and Institutions Time, Continuity, and Change Grade level: 9-12 Class periods needed: 1.5- 50 minute periods Purpose, Background, and Context Sociologists seek to understand how and why deviance occurs within a society. They do this by developing theories that explain factors impacting deviance on a wide scale such as social frustrations, socialization, social learning, and the impact of labeling. Four main theories have developed in the last 50 years. Anomie: Deviance is caused by anomie, or the feeling that society’s goals or the means to achieve them are closed to the person Control: Deviance exists because of improper socialization, which results in a lack of self-control for the person Differential association: People learn deviance from associating with others who act in deviant ways Labeling: Deviant behavior depends on who is defining it, and the people in our society who define deviance are usually those in positions of power Students will participate in a “jigsaw” where they will become knowledgeable in one theory and then share their knowledge with the rest of the class. After all theories have been presented, the class will use the theories to explain an historic example of socially deviant behavior: Zoot Suit Riots. Apart from brief mentions, it has not featured in the American Sociological Review for sixteen years. Moreover, the term has narrowed and is now used almost exclusively to discuss deviance. -

March 2018 The Sociological Review Monographs Series | March 2018 Unboxing the Sharing Economy: The Sociological Review Monographs Series Opportunities and Risks of the Era of Collaboration The idea of a rising ‘sharing economy’ is currently a hot topic in an international debate that builds on the emergence of peer-to-peer network exchanges that rely more on access than on property, on relations more than on appropriation, to call into question the sociological understanding of the relationship between the society and the market that goes back to authors such as Polanyi, Marx and Sombart. An Abstract of Anomie and Development—A Cross-National Study by Amin Etemadifar Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Sociology The University of Toledo December 2016 This is a quantitative cross-national study examining the relationship between development and anomie in 100 countries using the data extracted from the World Bank and United Nations Development Program. The main goal of the study is to inspect Durkheim’s theory of anomie, as he views anomie as a threat to the stability and integration of society. So the study distinguishes such a formulation of anomie with that of Merton and his followers who reformulated it as a concept merely to explain the issue of crime. Independent variables of study include the Human Development Index (measured based on health, education, and income), Political Development Index (measured based on efficiency of government, rule of law, and accountability of government), social inequality, migration, access to the Internet, international economic integration, urbanization, gender development, and size of population, and their effects on anomie are examined by a OLS curvilinear regression technique. -

During the last two decades, Albanians have experienced rapid changes, great turmoil and transitions from a communist, traditional ethnic-based society towards a new era of modern norms of a “western” society. We will build on Durkhemian’s paradigm on anomie as the first leading cause to crime and deviance. We hypothesize that: “when ethnic-based family oriented societies face new rules and regulations, a deregulation of the social system and a disruption of family ties is displayed, hence a domain of anomie is created, a threat of collective conscience of the society, a state of being lost between past and future which influences people to be more prone to committing murder and crimes towards society, towards their families and towards themselves, committing suicide. The second hypotheses is that: the honor killings are nothing but a rudiment of the old patriarchal societies and an expression of the collision between the new imposed norms and old, well-established traditions. Political Science 597 Contentious Politics1 Fall 2020 Tuesdays 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Zoom Prof. Lee Ann Banaszak Office Hours: W 2 p.m.- 4p.m. Remote only and by appointment E-Mail: [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION Social movements, protest, revolutions, contentious politics: despite the differing labels these phenomena are often explored by a cohesive group of scholars. This course explores the nature of these forms of political behavior. We will look at the major theories that sociologists and political scientists have created to explain the mobilization and outcomes of social movements. How do we explain why people participate in protest or other types of social movements? Why is it that some people never revolt although observers would say they are as bad off as others that do? What sorts of factors determine the tactics people will use once they decide something must be done? Can governments repress revolutions or social movements? What determines whether a social movement or revolution is successful? We will also critically assess theories and concepts. Are these theories and concepts well defined? What are the mechanisms by which they operate and the scope conditions where they are found? How can we best assess competing theories? In examining these questions, we will read theoretical works, quantitative studies comparing many different social movements and case studies of particular social movements and revolutions comparatively but also in the United States. By the end of this course, you should have a good grasp of the theoretical debates about social movements, the methods which have been used to study social movements, and you will have cursory knowledge of several different revolutions and social movements ranging from the East German 1989 revolution to the American women’s movement. -

How can attention to the body influence our understanding of social processes of subjectivity, interaction, and practice? While the body has long been an "absent presence" in sociology, multiple approaches to theorizing and researching the body have emerged in recent decades. A sociological approach to the body and embodiment provides an opportunity to bridge the gap between everyday experience and analyses of broad social structures which can seem disconnected from daily life. In this course, we will examine the processes by which individual bodies are shaped by and, in turn, shape social life. Key questions to be explored include: how are bodies regulated by social forces; how do individuals perform the body and how does interactional context influence this performance; what is the meaning of the body in social life; and is there a "right" body? Course Requirements This is primarily a reading seminar. All required readings will be available on Blackboard. Some readings my change over the course of the quarter. All changes will be announced in class and on Blackboard. It is your responsibility to check Blackboard for course related announcements. Students are expected to attend each class meeting and should come to each class prepared to discuss the material in depth. Class time will include full and small group discussions. -

Feelings of normlessness, purposelessness and meaninglessness are among these emotions. These feelings of normlessness, purposelessness, and meaninglessness are often referred to as „anomie‟ by criminologists and sociologists. This study attempts to utilize Durkheim‟s theoretical model and framework of anomie to explain adolescents‟ aggression. Data from the “National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, 1998-1999, Self Reporting Cycle 3” with a sub-sample of 5500 of adolescents [ages ranged from10-15years] are used to explore if the anomic condition in adolescence is linked to increased aggression. Results from the multivariate analysis support the hypothesis that indeed the anomic condition during adolescence is positively related to their levels of aggression.
