These characteristics require scholars to revisit social influence mechanisms online. The current study builds on social influence literature to explore social network and gender effects on online behavior. Findings from a quasi- experiment suggest that both network-related variables and gender are significantly associated with online behavior. -

Choi* & A.C. Pritchard** Abstract. Investors face myriad investment alternatives and seemingly limitless information concerning those alternatives. Not surprisingly, many commentators contend that investors frequently fall short of the ideal investor posited by the rational actor model. Investors are plagued with a variety of behavioral biases (such as, among others, the hindsight bias, the availability bias, loss aversion, and overconfidence). Even securities market institutions and intermediaries may suffer from biases, led astray by groupthink and overconfidence. The question remains whether regulators should focus on such biases in formulating policy. An omnipotent regulatory decisionmaker would certainly improve on flawed investor decisionmaking. The alternative we face, however, is a behaviorally-flawed regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). -

Beyond “Social Contagion”: Associative Diffusion and the Emergence of Cultural Variation∗ Amir Goldberg Stanford University Sarah K. Stein Stanford University July 16, 2018 Abstract Network models of diffusion predominantly think about cultural variation as a prod- uct of social contagion. But culture does not spread like a virus. In this paper, we pro- pose an alternative explanation which we refer to as associative diffusion. Drawing on two insights from research in cognition—that meaning inheres in cognitive associations between concepts, and that such perceived associations constrain people’s actions— we propose a model wherein, rather than beliefs or behaviors per-se, the things being transmitted between individuals are perceptions about what beliefs or behaviors are compatible with one another. Conventional contagion models require an assumption of network segregation to explain cultural variation. In contrast, we demonstrate that the endogenous emergence of cultural differentiation can be entirely attributable to social cognition and does not necessitate a clustered social network or a preexisting division into groups. Besides the crisis itself, there are growing signs of rising conflict potential of societies around the world. Indi- cators of global mood changes are hard to detect and direct questionnaires suffer from social desirability biases. However, so-called implicit methods can reveal humans intrinsic desires from e.g. social media texts. We present psychologically validated social unrest predictors and replicate scalable and automated predictions, setting a new state of the art on a recent German shared task dataset. We employ this model to investigate a change of language towards social unrest during the COVID-19 pandemic by comparing established psychological predictors on samples of tweets from spring 2019 with spring 2020. The results show a significant increase of the conflict-indicating psychometrics. With this work, we demonstrate the applicability of automated NLP-based approaches to quantitative psychological research. 1 Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic and the reactions to it have led to growing social tensions. Guiterrez-´ Romero (2020) studied the effects of social distancing and lockdowns on riots, violence against civilians, and food-related conflicts in 24 African countries. The author found that the risk of riots and violence have increased due to lockdowns. -
