Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy Program Learning Outcomes – MCP PDT MA Drama Therapy (PDT) – Program Learning Outcomes 1.0 Students will be able to evaluate and apply drama therapy approaches in working with clients. 1.1 Situate drama therapy within a critical historical context focusing on the relationship between dramatic art and healing traditions from various world cultures. 1.2 Evaluate theories and methods of major drama therapy approaches, and ways in which they overlap, diverge, and complement one another. 1.3 Integrate foundational concepts underlying drama therapy and action techniques to support and complement the Recovery Model and other major models of psychotherapy in therapeutic practice. 1.4 Develop drama therapy interventions that address the needs of different clinical populations and age groups in a culturally sensitive manner (taking into account factors of human difference including gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identification/expression, and spiritual/religious practices). 1.5 Use drama therapy and action methods skillfully as a means of clinical intervention. 1.6 Use a drama therapy framework to assess clients and implement treatment plans, individually and in groups. 1.7 Translate drama therapy concepts and terminology in professional communication (oral and written) that is clear and relevant to both clients and allied professionals. 1.8 Integrate drama therapy and action methods with best practices from verbal, somatic, and expressive arts-based approaches into clinical work with individuals and groups. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF IRRESISTIBLE IMPULSE Jess Spirer "It is a fundamental principle of the criminal law that every" crime, either common law or statutory, with the exception of public nuisances and breaches of what are commonly called police regula- tions, includes a mental element.' 2 We know this mental element by diverse names,-mens rea, criminal intent, vicious will, guilty mind, and so forth-but its most important characteristic is a wilfulness to commit the crime or act in question. And when this wilfulness or volition is actually or constructively absent, there is generally no crime. Of the several conditions which negative the element of volition or criminal intent, probably the best known is that of insanity. In the case of the grossly insane, the standards of responsibility seem to be fairly well defined, for as a general rule the law holds that if the misdoer does not know right from wrong with respect to his particular act, then he is not to be held accountable for what he has done. -

Copyright C Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S0269889707001354 Printed in the United Kingdom Introduction: Knowledge, Belief, and the Impulse to Natural Theology Fernando Vidal Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin Bernhard Kleeberg Justus-Liebig-Universitat¨ Giessen The title of this issue of Science in Context – “Believing Nature, Knowing God” – is intended to suggest the moral, emotional, and cognitive conditions in which the historical alliance of “nature” and “God” operated, and to make a more general point about knowing and believing. The production of scientific knowledge includes mechanisms for bringing about acceptance that such knowledge is true, and thus for generating a psychological state of belief. Toclaim to have knowledge of nature involves an attitude of belief in certain epistemic values, in the procedures associated with them, and in the results to which they lead.1 “Nature,” both as a totality to be known, and as the sum of the results of research directed towards it, turns out to be an object of belief. Reciprocally, even when the operations of nature are ultimately attributed to the action or will of a transcendent power, the production of justified statements about the existence, properties, and intentions of such power entails evidentiary and argumentative practices of the sort associated with the production of knowledge. Hence, whether we accept certain rational propositions and ways of reasoning because we adhere to the epistemic values of modern science or because we trust divine wisdom and benevolence, what is crucial for the validity of an argument is not that it rests on “knowledge” or “belief,” but the authority we ascribe to the relevant practices of substantiating claims, be they in the laboratory or the church. -

Results: Stubbornness/rigidity, agitation/aggressiveness, and argumentativeness were frequent and the most central symptoms in the network. Discipline and Murder 72 DOI: 10.1515/abcsj-2017-0005 Discipline and Murder: Panoptic Pedagogy and the Aesthetics of Detection in J.G. Ballard’s Running Wild CORNELIA MACSINIUC University of Suceava Abstract My essay proposes a reading of J.G. Ballard’s 1988 novella Running Wild as a cautionary crime story, a parable about the self-fulfilling prophecies of contemporary urban fears and about the “prisons” they create in a consumerist, technology- and media-dominated civilization. Interpreted in the light of Foucault’s concept of panopticism, Ballard’s gated community as a crime setting reveals how a disciplinary pedagogy meant to obtain “docile bodies,” masked under the socially elitist comfort of affluence and parental care, “brands” the inmate-children as potential delinquents and ultimately drives them to an act of “mass tyrannicide.” Ballard uses the murder story as a vehicle for the exploration of the paradoxical effects of a regime of total surveillance and of mediated presence, which, while expected to make “murder mystery” impossible, allows for the precession of the representation to the real (crime). The essay also highlights the way in which Ballard both cites and subverts some of the conventions of the Golden Age detective fiction, mainly by his rejection of the latter’s escapist ethos and by the liminal character of his investigator, at once part of a normalizing panoptic apparatus and eccentric to it, a “poetic figure” (Chesterton) relying on imagination and “aestheticizing” the routines of the detection process. In the context of social science, however, we argue that this metaphor leads to magical thinking and should be described as a simile, rather than a metaphor. We review literature on ‘‘social contagion’’ using the dialogical paradigm and conclude that peer-reviewed claims tend to correspond with imagined realities from epidemiology rather than social science, including assumptions of passive and linear microbial spread, as well as pathology. We explore case studies on the spread of laughter, riot behavior, and ‘‘mass psychogenic illness,’’ and find that social contagion involves social meanings negotiated at the level of persons and groups that are uncharacteristic to the spread of diseases. Dialogism is presented as a correction to the epidemiological paradigm. Teaching Eighteenth-Century French Literature: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Eighteenth-Century Modernities: Present Contributions and Potential Future Projects from EC/ASECS (The 2014 EC/ASECS Presidential Address) by Christine Clark-Evans It never occurred to me in my research, writing, and musings that there would be two hit, cable television programs centered in space, time, and mythic cultural metanarrative about 18th-century America, focusing on the 1760s through the 1770s, before the U.S. became the U.S. One program, Sleepy Hollow on the FOX channel (not the 1999 Johnny Depp film) represents a pre- Revolutionary supernatural war drama in which the characters have 21st-century social, moral, and family crises. Added for good measure to several threads very similar to Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” story are a ferocious headless horseman, representing all that is evil in the form of a grotesque decapitated man-demon, who is determined to destroy the tall, handsome, newly reawakened Rip-Van-Winkle-like Ichabod Crane and the lethal, FBI-trained, diminutive beauty Lt. Abigail Mills. These last two are soldiers for the politically and spiritually righteous in both worlds, who themselves are fatefully inseparable as the only witnesses/defenders against apocalyptic doom. While the main characters in Sleepy Hollow on television act out their protracted, violent conflict against natural and supernatural forces, they also have their own high production-level, R & B-laced, online music video entitled “Ghost.” The throaty feminine voice rocks back and forth to accompany the deft montage of dramatic and frightening scenes of these talented, beautiful men and these talented, beautiful women, who use as their weapons American patriotism, religious faith, science, and wizardry. -

Choi* & A.C. Pritchard** Abstract. Investors face myriad investment alternatives and seemingly limitless information concerning those alternatives. Not surprisingly, many commentators contend that investors frequently fall short of the ideal investor posited by the rational actor model. Investors are plagued with a variety of behavioral biases (such as, among others, the hindsight bias, the availability bias, loss aversion, and overconfidence). Even securities market institutions and intermediaries may suffer from biases, led astray by groupthink and overconfidence. The question remains whether regulators should focus on such biases in formulating policy. An omnipotent regulatory decisionmaker would certainly improve on flawed investor decisionmaking. The alternative we face, however, is a behaviorally-flawed regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
