Cut Of The Land .

Captured as a form of escape on a series of walks during the third lockdown in , Cut Of The Land presents a meandering journey around a series of cuts that form the canal system between the rural suburbs of Southall, and basin in the old Brent docklands. Starting in the post war residential areas surrounding the Grand Union Canal arm of the Grand Union Canal the landscape is Camden Islington Hackney interspersed with open green spaces as well as storage sites and industrial centres. This harks back to the original purpose of the Hammersmith Regent’s Canal Ealing Tower Hillingdon and Fulham Hamlets canal as a transport network during the industrial revolution. Westminster Kensington Towards the start of the Regent’s Canal in the and Chelsea environment becomes increasingly urbanised. As well as the canal itself Cut Of The Land also explores how it has shaped the surrounding area, examining ideas of the man altered landscape. While there are hints to its old industrial past, the canals were usurped by the road and rail network. Since then they have undergone a transformation into a site for leisure. Having cut through a combined twenty-two miles of land in order to build the Paddington Arm and the Regents Canal, they shape the environment around them both in the built-up areas and rural. Together they act as a green corridor, a boundary line between different boroughs, and in some places even a socio-economic divider. Cut Of The Land explores these different facets of the canals to present a unique perspective on north London and its waterways.
