Crete in Spring 2018 Lead by Fiona Dunbar A Greentours Trip Report Friday 6th April Arrival After an early start at Gatwick, we arrived in Crete only a little late. Ian Hislop was on our flight, presumably on his way out to stay with his wife, author of such Cretan Aga sagas as ‘The Island’. Driving along, the countryside was markedly lush and green compared to some years. The Robinia pseudoacacia was dripping in white blossom, the Judas trees with pink. There were acres of yellow, and yellow and white, Chrysanthemum coronarium. We enjoyed a welcome but late lunch at a taverna in the village of Armeni instead. The saganaki or fried cheese was made with the cooks’ own freshly prepared, mild goats cheese. The garden centre next door was quite a pull, too! As we gained altitude we looked out over hills covered with fig, gorse, Quercus pubescens, Asphodeline aestivus and almost fluorescing lime green Giant Fennel, in between the groves of olives and small fields. Having been greeted by Herakles in Spili with glasses of cold water and quince in honey, we settled into our rooms. Some walked down the track below. There was a fine stand of tall purple broomrapes on the nasturtiums in Heracles garden. We reconvened in the breakfast room and strolled over the road to Costas and Maria’s taverna, almost hidden by trailing vines and flowers. Most of us tried the rabbit in lemon sauce – tender and tasty. It was Good Friday, and as I headed to bed I could hear a Scops Owl calling. -

POLICY PAPER Policy Paper 49 July 2021 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Conserving Ras Al Khaimah is home to a diverse ecosystem of plant species, many of which have medicinal uses and Ras Al Khaimah’s cultural significance in addition to supporting wildlife. Summary We managed to fit plenty of sites and lots of plants into our week in the “Orchid Capital of Europe”, visiting a good variety of plant-rich habitats ranging from breezy coastal salt marshes and limestone sea cliffs to typical Mediterranean stony hillsides, olive groves and shady woodlands. The orchids did not fail to delight, and we found a superb selection of species during the week. The non-orchid flora was equally attractive with showy displays of Narcissi, Wild Tulips, Anemones and Irises, and plenty of the usual Mediterranean species in all the areas we visited. We were fortunate in that most of the locations we looked at were almost deserted and we were able to explore beautiful woodlands and open glades with only bird-song and cow-bells to be heard. Butterflies were spotted at most of the sites we visited, and there were plenty of other interesting insects to be found as well. Although we spent most of our time looking down at the plants, we did manage to produce a very good bird list with some exciting coastal species seen, as well as the more usual Mediterranean birds of stony hillsides and dark forests. -

A morphometric analysis has been carried out for the first time Resumen. Se ha realizado, por primera vez, un análisis morfométrico in order to investigate the variability of the infraspecific taxa included con el fin de investigar la variación morfológica de los táxones in the steno-Mediterranean Malva cretica s.l., i.e. M. cretica subsp. infraespecíficos actualmente reconocidos en Malva cretica s.l., i.e. althaeoides, M. cretica subsp. cretica, and the poorly-known M. cretica subsp. cretica y subsp. althaeoides, incluyendo la poco conocida var. montana, described from southern Italy. According to our results, var. montana del sur de Italia. Según nuestros resultados, la subsp. M. cretica subsp. althaeoides and subsp. cretica are worth of taxonomic althaeoides y la subsp. cretica merecen el rango de subespecie y ocupan recognition at subspecies rank and occupy respectively the western and respectivamente los sectores occidentales y centro-orientales del área the central-eastern sectors of the species range. -

The main objective of the current investigation is to compare between the pathways of evolution and the degree of similarity among the present polygonaceous taxa. To achieve the intended target, two character data sets were tested; morphological and molecular traits. Winclada/Nona programs were used for cladistic analysis while NTSYS-PC software for phenetic analysis. The resulted cladogram supports the monophylly of Polygonaceae with its five lineages, while the obtained phenogram comprises five groups. It was concluded that there was a close concordance between the results of phylogentic and phenetic studies on Polygonaceae. Key words: Phylogenetic analysis, Numerical taxonomy, Polygonaceae. Abstract - The present study forms part of the series of systematic and taxonomic contributions related to plant species of the Italian flora, and also other phanerogams, in light of recent biosystematic works of a molecular-genetic nature. Caloscordum and Nectaroscordum are separated from Allium s.l., Holandrea is included within Dichoropetalum, Ficaria is separated from Ranunculus and Althaea sect. Hirsutae is included within Malva. Confirmation is given for the inclusion of Lavatera within Malva, of Aegilops within Triticum and for the separation of Phelipanche from Orobanche. In addition some observations regarding the genera Cytisus, Hippophaë, Portulaca, Rhaponticum, Senecio and Torilis are presented. Finally new combinations and/or new names are proposed within the genera Caloscordum, Necta- roscordum, Dichoropetalum, Ficaria, Hippophaë, Malva, Portulaca and Rhaponticum. Continua la serie di contributi sistematici e tassonomici relativi a entità della flora italiana, ma anche ad altre fanerogame, predisposti alla luce di recenti lavori di biosistematica su base genetico- molecolare. Da Allium s.l. vengono separati Caloscordum e Nectaroscordum, Holandrea è unito a Dichoro- petalum, Ficaria è separato da Ranunculus e Althaea sect. Hirsutae è unita a Malva. Viene ribadita la riunione di Lavatera a Malva, di Aegilops a Triticum e la separazione di Phelipanche da Orobanche. Inoltre vengono fatte alcune considerazioni sui generi Cytisus, Hippophaë, Portulaca, Rhaponticum, Senecio e Torilis.
