The country, which is positioned at a crossroads between Europe and Asia, contains nine World Heritage sites, and has rich cultural, historical, and religious resources reaching back from the ancient Greeks and beyond medieval times. It contains mountain ski resorts, beaches with sun and sand (the self-named “sun-and-sand-stalag”), and many “wild” and undeveloped rural areas for adventure seekers. These resources provide a strong base for tourism in Bulgaria. In the mid-1990s, while many sectors of the Bulgarian economy were registering losses, statistics reported by the National Statistic Institute and Ministry of Finance show the tourism sector was steadily generating positive financial results.

Prof. AYŞECAN TERZİOĞLU Keywords: migration, intergenerational transmission, home, belonging, community This thesis study investigates the idea of home and the sense of belonging from an intergenerational perspective by focusing on dual citizenship applicants among Bulgaria-born Turks who migrated to Turkey between 1969-1978 and their Turkey- born children. It relies on oral history research conducted with migrants/applicants and their children. It argues that dual citizenship applications create room for ap- plicants to negotiate the conceptions of home and belonging by requiring regular visits to Bulgaria. By focusing on this negotiation, it explores the material and symbolic components of the idea of home, the ruptures and continuities in the rela- tionship between Bulgaria-born migrants/applicants and their Turkey-born children, and community formation practices. In addition to past experiences and present cir- cumstances, it introduces the notion of the future as a significant component of these processes.

Small State Autonomy in Hierarchical Regimes. The Case of Bulgaria in the German and Soviet Spheres of Influence 1933 – 1956 By Vera Asenova Submitted to Central European University Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Prof. Julius Horváth Budapest, Hungary November 2013 Statement I hereby state that the thesis contains no materials accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions. The thesis contains no materials previously written and/or published by another person, except where appropriate acknowledgement is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Vera Asenova ………………... ii Abstract This thesis studies international cooperation between a small and a big state in the framework of administered international trade regimes. It discusses the short-term economic goals and long-term institutional effects of international rules on domestic politics of small states. A central concept is the concept of authority in hierarchical relations as defined by Lake, 2009. Authority is granted by the small state in the course of interaction with the hegemonic state, but authority is also utilized by the latter in order to attract small partners and to create positive expectations from cooperation. The main research question is how do small states trade their own authority for economic gains in relations with foreign governments and with local actors. This question is about the relationship between international and domestic hierarchies and the structural continuities that result from international cooperation. The contested relationship between foreign authority and domestic institutions is examined through the experience of Bulgaria under two different international trade regimes – the German economic sphere in the 1930’s and the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) in the early 1950’s.

  • Folksongs of the Turkic World
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, November 2016, Vol. 6, No. 11, 1343-1370 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2016.11.008 D DAVID PUBLISHING Folksongs of the Turkic World János Sipos Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary The long-term goal of my research has been to systematize and compare by musical criteria the folk songs of Turkic groups and ethnicities living around them. Here I rarely touch on instrumental folk music, the repertoire of professional or semi-professional performers, the most recent strata, seldom or just occasionally discuss art music and the cultural, social and anthropological implications of music are only sporadically considered, too. There are close connections between the languages of Turkic groups but their musical stocks are fundamentally different. Actually, that is not surprising, because these people are, at least in part, Turkified, and through their substrata (that is people absorbed by them) they are in genetic and cultural relations with several non-Turkic peoples. My research therefore has repercussions; apart from the Turkic-speaking peoples tied by culture, language and history, upon their neighbors and partly absorbed other peoples, creating the foundation for an even broader future comparative ethnomusicological research of Eurasian groups. This paper is aimed to provide a very short summary about the findings of my field researches into the folk music of different Turkic-speaking people between 1987 and 2015. I introduce the sources, the collecting work and the methods of processing and analyzing the songs. I also give an analytical introduction to the folksong of Anatolian Turks, Azeris, Turkmens, Uzbeks (and Tajiks), Karachay-Balkars, Kazakhs, Kyrgyzs, a Sufi Turkish community in Thrace and the area of the Volga-Kama-Belaya region.

Fine, Co-Chair Professor Fatma Müge Göçek Professor Mary Kelley Professor Rudi Lindner Barbara Reeves-Ellington, University of Oxford © Nevila Pahumi 2016 For my family ii Acknowledgements This project has come to life thanks to the support of people on both sides of the Atlantic. It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. It is my committee members whom I thank first and foremost: Pamela Ballinger, John Fine, Rudi Lindner, Müge Göcek, Mary Kelley, and Barbara Reeves-Ellington.

  • The Bulgarians in America and the Native-Born Intelligentsia in Defence of the Macedonian Liberating Movement (1899-1903) George Genov - Phd
1 The Bulgarians in America and the native-born Intelligentsia in defence of the Macedonian liberating movement (1899-1903) George Genov - PhD At the end of the 19th century the Bulgarians in North America numbered less than 1000./1/ Despite this, their presence in the patchwork ethnic picture of the New World began to be felt, since the immigrants arriving from Moesia, Thrace and Macedonia were the sons of a virtuous nation, which held sacred its love towards the fatherland, freedom and hard work. The native land was far distant, but the majority of the Bulgarian emigrants were duty-bound in their efforts aimed at realizing their national ideals./2/ Their social manifestation on American soil was focused on the timely creation of mutual aid brotherhoods and parishes. The organization of political groups such as clubs, study groups, and societies was the next higher stage in the emigrant's activity. The appearance and historical mission of these sociopolitical associations are important scholarly problems, whose answers will provide us with many unknown facts important not only as a regional phenomenon but also in the context of Pan- Bulgarian recent history. This will help us to construct another "optimistic theory" concerning the Bulgarian national mentality, in that it will provide us with examples of the exceptional patriotism shown by our fellow countrymen under conditions of a not particularly hospitable reality. The issue is particularly relevant for their descendants now living in the United States and Canada and exposed to the dangere of assimilation. It is also somewhat political in tone considering the denationalizing aspirations of the Serbian, Turkish and Greek propaganda from across the sea.
