On 20 June 2014 the appeal was recovered for the Secretary of State's determination, in pursuance of section 79 of and paragraph 3 of Schedule 6 to the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, because it involves a renewable energy development. Inspector’s recommendation and summary of the decision 3. The Inspector recommended that the appeal be dismissed and planning permission refused. Chap 5 10/12/04 12:20 pm Page 233 Building a Family: William Cavendish, First Duke of Newcastle, and the Construction of Bolsover and Nottingham Castles Introduction Bolsover Castle, overlooking the Doe Lea valley in Derbyshire, and Nottingham Castle, overlooking its city, are among the most dramatic of seventeenth- century great houses. This article proposes an explanation for the re-building of these two medieval castles that is based upon the social circumstances of the family and household responsible for the work. Separated by sixty years, the two buildings appear to be very different yet share the same remarkable patron. William Cavendish (1593–1676) became Viscount Mansfield, then Earl, Mar- quis and finally Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.1 He is celebrated for his extrav- agant entertainments for Charles I in 1633 and 1634 and his governorship of Prince Charles, the future Charles II. In 1618, he married a local heiress, Elizabeth Bassett, who became the mother of his children before dying in 1643. William was commander of the king’s army in the north during the Civil War and went into exile for fifteen years after losing the battle of Marston Moor in 1644. His second marriage took place in Paris in 1645, to Margaret Lucas, lady in waiting to Henrietta Maria and also a prolific writer.2 He lived in Antwerp, where he wrote his famous book on horsemanship, until 1660. At the Restoration, he returned to live mainly at his family home at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire until his death in 1676. The Little Castle at Bolsover was begun by William’s father Charles Cavendish (1553–1617) and William himself added interior decoration and further buildings on the site.

Archives 2005 A summary list of archives made available in Derbyshire Record Office during 2005 Derbyshire Record Office and Derby Diocesan Record Office Postal address: County Hall, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3AG Email:[email protected] Cultural and Community Services Archives 2005 A summary list of new accessions In Derbyshire Record Office Introduction 2005 saw the addition to archives available to the public in Derbyshire Record Office of over 400 new series. These included documents of all types from official records of the county of Derbyshire and city of Derby to personal records of individuals. The dates of new accessions spanned over four hundred years – from late medieval documents to parish council records of 2005. Although all these new documents relate to Derby and Derbyshire, many had strayed some distance from their places of origin. One of the most interesting acquisitions during the year was a volume of Sheriff’s Tourn Court records for Morleston and Litchurch Hundred, 1606-1609. It is exceptional for such records to survive for any period and this book is especially important because it shows the links between the ancient role of High Sheriff and (for the early 17th century) the more modern ones of Justices of the Peace. Purchased with assistance from the Friends of the National Libraries, this volume will be an indispensable resource for local and family historians in the relevant areas of the county. (D6386). Survey and fieldwork by Record Office archivists has also resulted in acquisition of additions to archives already in the collections and furthermore we are grateful to our colleagues in the Library Service for their assistance in ensuring the preservation here of unique original manuscripts by facilitating their transfer to the Record Office.

Oakhill and the Vicarage Accessible
OAKHILL AND THE VICARAGE, INTAKE LANE, CROMFORD These buildings, now known as Alison House and The Old Vicarage, were for most of their 160 year or so history known as Oakhill and The Vicarage and will be referred to as such here. Both are listed grade II. Their entries give a circa 1800 date for the former and a late 18th century date for the latter. Neither is correct. The land the houses were built on is shown on the Cromford Tithe Award Map of 18411 as agricultural land in the ownership of Richard Arkwright II. The house which came to be called ‘The Vicarage’ was built by Richard Arkwright II to provide the Revd Robert Morgan Jones, perpetual curate and minister of the Arkwright built chapel in Cromford, with an appropriate dwelling following his marriage in July 1841.2 Robert Morgan Jones MA was installed as minister of the chapel in 1839. He lived at Matlock3 prior to moving into the house that, 25 years or so later, could correctly be called a vicarage, once St Mary’s was given the status of parish church. He and his family are certainly living at the house by the time of the 1851 census but it seems likely they moved there immediately after it was built, perhaps at the end of the year of his marriage or very soon after. The earliest definite fact known about Oakhill is that in 1847 William Melville, a cotton spinner and cotton merchant, formerly of Nottingham, died there.4 It would seem that by the mid-1830s Melville was tenant of Masson Mill and Cromford Mill.
