Uno de mis propósitos al escribirla fue presentar por escrito todos esos bonitos recuerdos que tengo de mi infancia al mismo tiempo que doy al lector una idea de lo que era la vida en Lajas (y por ende, en Puerto Rico) durante las décadas de 1940, 1950 y 1960. Otro propósito fue el poder transportarme al pasado y a mi pasado, al abrir las páginas de este libro y dar rienda suelta a mi imaginación, y gozarme al recordar aquellos tiempos tan bonitos y tan sanos que nunca jamás volverán.     KIM (STARK) AMBERG My impressions about my life adventure in Puerto Rico began, in some way, even before we landed on her shores, I would say. We boarded a ship---a Navy ship, no less—in New York on the tail of Hurricane Donna. It was during this voyage that I got a glimpse of the way the Army does things. Even though there were many sick passengers due to the rough seas, the strict Army regimen prevailed in the way people were allowed to have their meals. It didn’t matter how sick someone was at his designated meal time, if he felt more capable of eating at a time that was not assigned him, he just had to wait until his next assigned time. That was the beginning of what were to be other eye-opening observations of what it meant to be in the Army’s sphere of influence. Others that began that journey with me on the ship were Cathy Sivils and Trevor Williams. One of the ways that I felt the rigor of Army life occurred every evening at dusk. I may have heard “Taps” in my lifetime, but the requirement to stop what you were doing outside and to face the flag while “Taps” played was certainly a new experience. In fairness, if we were inside our homes, that requirement didn’t hold true. The idea of Officers’ Wherry where we lived was also part of the way Army life worked on the base. It was a relatively small, remote area with Front, Middle and Back Streets and small, but adequate, concrete houses lining those streets.

November is Discovery Day in Puerto Rico and is when we should celebrate our roots, as opposed to America’s Hispanic Month that lumps us all together as if we were the one. Columbus discovered Puerto Rico on November 19th 1493, during his second voyage to the New World. He found an island populated by as many as 50,000 Taíno or Arawak Indians known as Taínos. They called the island "Borikén". Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint John the Baptist. Later the name was switched to Puerto Rico. Traditionally this has been a month of festive celebrations, but in recent years those that favor their native roots have balked at celebratory efforts. The venue is the attractive Town and Country Resort & Conven- tion Center, located in Mission Valley just a short distance from the downtown area. The Town and Country provides an ideal setting for our annual meet- ing. It has ample lecture space, accommodation and restaurants on a gorgeous site that is also compact enough to permit attendees to stroll unhurriedly from one session to another. In addition to the regular oral and poster presentations, there will be a number of topical short courses and special interest workshops. An industrial exhibition fea- turing the most up-to-date products and services from a wide range of vendors will take place during the main part of the meeting. Plaza de la Dársena is best known for its permanent crafts market usually held on weekends. The ‘small house’ or La Casita in this plaza was originally built for the Department of Agriculture and Commerce and dates back to 1937. It now functions as an information center run by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. The plaza is also home to a statue of Henry the Navigator, Prince of Portugal. 2. Plaza de Hostos Directly in front of Plaza de la Dársena and La Casita, is La Plaza de Hostos, named after “The Citizen of the Americas” Eugenio María de Hostos. An avid supporter of the independence movement for Puerto Rico and Cuba, Hostos dedicated his life to educational causes, helping Peru and the Dominican Republic in organizing their educational systems as well as advocating women’s rights to higher education. A bust of Hostos adorns this plaza, where you can find numerous food vendors with typical fried treats and sweets, artisans, and locals playing dominos and enjoying the shade.
