Two REVIEW AND COMMENT BURNING MEMORIES - Ray Price (Columbia) Only TVinnTs record sounded more potent to me this week. Both will be winners for the label. Look for instant country take-off on this. Then it’ll move big in every pop market. Material as great as this is bound to be covered. Go with the original. LOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL - Monarchs (SS7) Everyone should be playing this. A hit in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia and Florida. LONG GONE LONESOME BLUES - Hank Williams, Jr. (MGM) Sales are good. Doing well where it ’s been played, mostly in the smaller markets...except in Washington, DC. The #1 request for Larry Pate-WAPX-Montgomery. A LACE MANTILLA AND A ROSE OF RED - Claude King (Columbia) Haven’t heard a word on this except from the label. They’re on the flip. My ear says this side. Pass along any news on either. Many thanks. - John D. Loudermilk (RCA) This is the side. Sorry for the wrong tip last week. Should do very well. LONNIE ON THE MOVE - Lonnie Mack (Fraternity) Turn on the lovelight. Early juke box sales should get it off to a hot start. Think you’ll like it more and more with repeated play. RONNIE - Donna Lynn (Capitol) Suggest the label back this up with her current "My Boy- Friend Got A Beatle Haircut." #23 at WPGC-Washington follows earlier Atlanta sales and requests. WELCOME TO MY WORLD - Jim Reeves (RCA) If there is one record we all missed that we should all go back and look for, then this_is it. Hitting in the North. But it’s our kind o* stuff. Only Rod Bernard was sharp enough to go with it all the way. Don’t be afraid to copy. It’s gonna do big things. OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND - Sunny & The Sunliners (Teardrop) I ’m not sold on this being bigger than his others, but it’s already doing big things for Charlie Brite-KEYS-Corpus Christi, Texas and Joe Boyle-KAOK-Lake Charles, Louisiana. IT WON’T BE LONG - Beatles (Capitol-LP) Top five request nightly at WQXI-Atlanta. Strong cut from the that could be a million seller single. THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG - Betty Everett (Vee Jay) The $$$ version. Can take off in less than a month, if you get on it quick. Has the Southern sound. NEEDLES AND PINS - Searchers (Kapp) It’s a big hit in England. Every British smash does not have to be big in this country. Remember, every import from the London charts will do less than the one before it. So, if this makes it here, then it should fall in be hind the Dave Clark Five. WATCH OVER HER - Wade Flemons (Vee Jay) #24 at WLAY-Muscle Shoals, Alabama. On the charts in Memphis and Montgomery. GOING BACK TO LOUISIANA - Bruce Channel (Le Cam) Sales and calls in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi. Florida and Arkansas. BLUE WINTER - Connie Francis (MGM; Gonna be a giant. As expected. Activity at WCAW-WQXI-WFUN-KVOL-WBSR-WFOM-KIXZ. THINK NOTHING ABOUT IT - Gene Chandler (Constellation) Jumps into the WKLO chart. I keep telling you. TAKE ME FOR WHAT I AM - L C Cooke (SAR) Strong Georgia R & B seller. Pop stations can wait a while. Will let you know. LIVE WIRE - Martha & The Vandellas (Gordy) Here and th ere. Spotty. But it’s the biggest for Hot Scott-WGIV-Charlotte, N. C. MONDO CANE #2 - Kai Winding (Verve) Forget what the label says. You call it "More #2." Makes a better title for a weak instrumental that is good to use to pad up until the news. FUN FUN FUN - Beach Boys (Capitol) Taking off for Dic k Starr-WFUN. Good initial sales in most areas. May do better than I had originally anticipated. STAY - Four Seasons (Vee Jay) Picked at KILT and WPGC. Won’t hurt their other record and will hit where it is played, though a lot of jocks will stay away from it. No pun meant. I ’LL MAKE YOU MINE - (Liberty) Another soft release. Larry Gar-WLEG-Laurens, S.C. feels it’ll be big. Maybe. But he’s like Anka. C old too long to get enough play to make a so-so song a winner. WHY OH WHY/LADY LOVE - Charlie Rich (Groove) He hasn ’t missed since he gave this label its first hit in umteen years. Both sides are geared for action in Dixie. February 10, 1964 -4- Nimber Forty Two REVIEW AND COMMENT (Cont'd.) ALWAYS IN MY HEART - Los Indios Tabajaras (RCA) Their last record took six months from start, to off and running. Don't think this will take as long or be as big. Pick it, play it, but watch it closely. May do better for the good music stations. Could come back to you in three or four months, just like "Maria Elena." THE PATRIOT GAME - Kingston Trio (Capitol) It's from their latest album. Could be a big left-field item. Strong lyrics. Flip may be a factor. STARDUST - Nino Tempo & April Stevens (Atco) Their last single was up and down the charts in eight weeks. If this one takes off as fast, it could repeat the pattern. But, it's a great side, so pick it. Play it. But watch it carefully. WHITE ON WHITE - Danny Williams (UA) Action reported by Joe Boyle-KAOK-Lake Charles, Jay Cook-WHBQ-Memphis and Howard Anderson-WEED-Rocky Mount, NC. May be more than a turn table hit. Good record. SOUL SERENADE - King Curtis (Capitol) Top seller in Atlanta. Broken first by Burke Johnson-WAOK. Get on this. It's a strong adult winner. WORDS WRITTEN ON WATER - Avons (Groove) One of three records on the song. But, it's the only version available as a single. With good play, this can be. ALBUM PROGRAMMING One more timeI Don't give the away at the hops or as contest prizes. Keep the ones we review. A good percentage of today’s single hits are cuts from current albums. You'll be first on a hot item if you pay attention. Last time I'll sell you on the value of advance info. THE NEVER ENDING IMPRESSIONS (ABC) Don't bet that their next single will not be from this tough set. One or maybe both sides of the follow-up to "Talking About My Baby" will come from this album. BEST: "Sister Love." GOOD: "Girl Don't You Know Me." NEED TO BELONG - Jerry Butler (Vee Jay) Both sides of his newest release are fron this one. See what I mean! BEST: "Message To Martha." GOOD::"Giving Up On Love." FREDDIE SCOTT SINGS (Colpix) The side we recommended last week to you _is now available as a single. BEST: "Where Does Love Go." THERE I'VE SAID IT AGAIN - Bobby Vinton (Epic) Have you picked his next release from his album. It's in iti Play it now and shout exclusive. BEST: "My Heart Belongs To Only You." GOOD: "My Foolish Heart" and "Unchained Melody." FORGET HIM - Bobby Rydell (Cameo) Only one side knocks me out. It’s also been done by the Tymes and the Avons. But, Bobby has the best version on the song. It could be a strong single. BEST: "Words Written On Water." HEY LITTLE COBRA - Rip Chords (Columbia) Package is strong as is and will not need to give birth to another single to give it longevity at the retail level. Mostly a collection of their earlier half-hits. BEST: "She Thinks I Still Care." THE GOOD TIME SINGERS (Capitol) Fresh new folks sound. The first group to come up with a top notch album without the help of Milt Okun. TV exposure will make this one hot. BEST: "Rock Island Line." GOOD: "Freedom Calling." YOU'RE NO GOOD - Betty Everett (Vee Jay) HeyJ This gal is really good. If the title song wasn't a hit for you, that’s too bad. You'll have to expose her talents with her second single, which is from this album. BEST: "Shoop Shoop Song." Also: (see previous issues for BEST and GOOD selections). BORN TO SING THE BLUES-Brook Benton (Mer) SOMEWHERE-Tymes (Par) REFLECTING-Chad Mitchell (Mer) SERENDIPITY SINGERS (phi) BORN TO WANDER-Four Seasons (Phi) APOLLO SATURDAY NIGHT (Atco) TALK BACK-Johnny Tillotson (MGM) GREAT SOUL TUNES-Barbara Lewis (Atl) FUN IN ACAPULCO-Elvis Presley (RCA) LOVE HIM-Doris Day (Col) WITH A SONG-Little Stevie (Tam) K2NGSMEN IN PERSON (Wan) OUT OF UMITS-Marketts (WBJ I REMEMBER BUDDY HOLLY-Bobby Vee (Lib) FOR YOU-Rick Nelson (Dec) GOLDEN OLDIES-Shirelles (See) HOT ROD HITS (Cap) 500 MILES-Bobby Bare WONDERFUL WORLD OF ANDY WILLIAMS (Col) DRAG CITY-Jan and Dean (Lib) NEWS AND NOTES Newest addition to our list of stations is KOLE in Port Arthur, Texas. Tommy Thompson will supply the info. Bob Lamberth is the new AM man at WMUZ-Montezuma, Georgia. Dean Griffith WPGC-Washington will be introducing the Beatles to an audience in the nation's capitol. He wonders, if he cons them into wearing a WPGC Good Guy Sweatshirt for the show, if he'll have to get a Beatle haircutI
