Simon & Jude Cathedral Pray for the Success of September 29, 2018 Diocesan Pastoral Center Arizona Rosary Celebration Message ARIZONA ROSARY CELEBRATION Chairman Lawrence G. Costanzo We are on the back stretch going into the far turn in our race to AZ Rosary Celebration 2018. We should take a close look at where we stand in each of our committees; do we have Parish Reps to help get out the word; have we contacted friends and neighbors, businesses we frequent and solicited ads. As we come nearer to the finish line we must get into high gear to make this year’s Rosary Celebration a success. Have we been praying to Our Lady of Czestochowa for the success of Rosary Celebration? Through her intercession, there have been several miracles. During the siege by the Saracens, the invaders became frightened when the people carried the picture in a procession around the city; the infidels fled. Later, the image was threatened with burning by an evil emperor, who had a wife, Irene, who saved it and hid it from harm. The image was in that city for 500 years, until it became part of some dowries, eventually being taken to Russia to a region that later became Poland. In September 14, 1920, when the Russian army assembled at the River Vistula, in preparation to invade Warsaw, the Polish people prayed to Our Lady. The next day was the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Russians quickly withdrew after the image of Our Lady appeared in the clouds over Warsaw. In Polish history, this is known as the Miracle of Vistula. During the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II, Hitler ordered all religious pilgrimages stopped. In a demonstration of love for Our Lady and their confidence in her protection, a half million Poles went to the sanctuary in defiance of Hitler's orders. Following the liberation of Poland in 1945, a million and a half people expressed their gratitude to the Madonna by praying before this miraculous image. As we can see, nothing is impossible if we have faith and pray to Our Lady for the success of Rosary Celebration. Our committee chairs have been working diligently to get their programs in order so that we can have a smooth event. Danny, Greg and I will be meeting with our Phoenix Convention Center counterparts to make sure we have everything in place. We have a commitment from the Phoenix Suns for half priced parking at the Jefferson St. Garage- - providing no other event will preempt us. If you park there, be sure to mention Rosary Celebration. Our committees in Tucson have also been firming up their plans for Rosary Celebration at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Last year, Bishop Wiesenberger was in attendance as the incoming Bishop of Tucson. This year he will be presiding and in conversations with him I know that he is quite impressed with the program to honor Mary. And while we are referring to Tucson, keep Gail Tucker in your prayers. She is the spouse of Tucson co-chair Al Tucker. Gail is experiencing some medical problems. Also continue to pray for the success of Rosary Celebration. As I noted earlier in this column – nothing is impossible if we ask for Mary’s intercession. Message ARIZONA STATE DEPUTY Thomas Kalisz My name is Tom Kalisz and I’m the new State Deputy for the Knights of Columbus here in Arizona. For as far back as I can remember, Rosary Sunday, now the Arizona Rosary Celebration has been a beautiful outpouring of spirituality for Catholics in Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma, and many other parts of Arizona. I know that many of you have been working hard already to prepare for the celebration this coming October. Your dedication to this program is simply amazing. People like Dorothy Westfall and Helen Grayek have been involved since the beginning. The Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters, Catholic Renewal Ministries, the Dioceses of Phoenix and Tucson, are a list off the many groups who help put on the celebration each year. I want to personally thank every volunteer and attendee for the parts that you play in ensuring this production is successful. Larry Costanzo has been the Arizona Rosary Celebration State Director for many years. His leadership has been spectacular. I welcome to the leadership team, Past State Deputy Larry Becker who is an understudy to Larry Costanzo. I look forward to working closely with them both. I have quickly learned that the Chairmen for Tucson and Phoenix are true witnesses to our faith. Many thanks to Danny Haywood and Greg Mattingly in Phoenix, and Al Tucker and Karen McEwen in Tucson, for their service managing the celebration in their respective cities. I hope that in the next 12 months, I will get to meet as many of the hard-working folks who run the celebration at the grass roots so that I can thank each and every one of you personally. This year we honor Our Lady of Czestochowa, the patron of Poland. I am humbled that this miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary was chosen to be honored this year. Since I was born in Poland, I was raised venerating her image and taught about her many miracles. I hope that as we approach October you take the time to read up on the image and her history. I know you will be amazed. I will include you in my prayers that God will work through you to achieve greatness and spread the gospel of light to thousands this October at the Arizona Rosary Celebration. Our Lady of Czestochowa, pray for us. Arata: How the Christian Faith Helped World War I Soldiers on the Western Front Cope with Shell-Shock How the Christian Faith Helped World War I Soldiers on the Western Front Cope with Shell-Shock Nicholas Arata The First World War’s extensive use of trench warfare exposed soldiers to some of industrialized war’s greatest horrors. In such a hellish environment, one would think that such horrors would corrupt a soldier’s faith in his Christian beliefs. How could a loving God allow such atrocities to occur? However, not only did faith help countless soldiers through the war, but Christianity helped relieve the symptoms of war neuroses, such as “shell-shock.” Armies across Europe used chaplains to give soldiers a religious guide, and those chaplains provided a religious outlet for the common soldier.

No country upon earth ever had it more in its power to attain these blessings than United America. Wondrously strange then, and much to be regretted indeed would it be, were we to neglect the means, and to depart from the road which Providence has pointed us, so plainly; I cannot believe it will ever come to pass. • Missionary Families of Christ MARY in the LIFE and MISSION of MFC
Missionary Families of Christ MARY IN THE LIFE AND MISSION OF MFC MFC is consecrated to Our Lady of the Rosary (a.k.a. Our Lady of Victory). We look to our Mother Mary as the personification of and the model for living out our Core Values. Just as our Core Values function as our constant guideposts as we proceed with our life and mission, so Mary likewise is our guide. Mary is at the very core of the life and mission of the Church quietly interceding and praying. Mary is also at the very heart of our community. But also, Mary is at the forefront of the spiritual war that is raging in the world today. We as holy warriors march under the banners of our Lord and our Lady. More than ever, we would like to focus on Mary as our model for living out our life in community. She serves as our model of holiness, faith, humility, obedience, total trust in God, hope, joy and discipleship. She is our inspiration. We look to Mary as our help as she intercedes for us. We therefore need to make an effort within ourselves, our families, and our community to ensure that Mary becomes an integral part of our lives. Our children need to experience Mary in our homes. Our community needs to put Mary in a place of honor during assemblies, conferences and communal activities. We also need to always remember to call on her to intercede for our community’s needs. Practical Application in our Community Life A.
